Just run under his legs and attack.
I left him until after I did the DLC for the alternate cutscene.

I bought the key.
Buying the key makes some things easier, but
there is a ladder next to the waterfall in Darkroot Basin that lets you access the Sif section of the forest without the key

I was too cheap to buy the key, so after pounding my head against a 6 headed wall for about an hour on my first playthrough I discovered the back door.

Sif puppy is an easy one.
The game had some loot issues and economy issues that were ironed out. And they nerfed the fuck out of Lightning.

Its a part of new londo that your have to open from the other side. So you gotta fight ghosties.

It's a shortcut. You'll learn about it later.
It's sort of a link between many areas, you can use it to get to New londo ruins, blight town etc.
Valley Of the Drakes is an optional kind of "hub" area, you'll see where that door leads to later in the game, it's kind of cool actually so I won't ruin it.

Buying the key with Souls from the Gaping Dragon is my goto. You can farm the souls it costs in minutes with backstabs.
