I remember back when TDK came out, I went to a midnight imax showing. Back then they didn't let you reserve seats like they do now so I went early, people were sitting/standing in line for a good 3 hours waiting for the movie to start. It was pretty nuts.

Theatre was great though, crowd was good, everyone was quiet, some funny talk taking place almost theatre wide waiting for the movie to start. When it started it was complete silence, when it was over everyone was in love (with the movie). Good times.

I've never been to a midnight showing before so The Dark Knight Rises is going to be my first experience in that area. Reading stories like Amir0x's has me a little worried; I'm usually the type who waits to see movies in an empty theatre if I don't just wait for the DVD (now Blu-Ray). Hopefully this isn't a mistake...

I'm quite excited for the film and I've been following this thread against my better judgement; I avoided Spoilergate but I'm too weak to stay away from the hype thread. I'm going to re-watch Begins and The Dark Knight before I go—I didn't buy a marathon ticket since that seems like a long time to be in the theatre—and read the thread with caution I suppose. After the 16th, I know I'm not venturing into any threads outside my subscriptions—though I suspect GAF as a whole should be relatively spoiler-free.

Don't worry about midnight showings. For the most part, people are going to be just as excited and respectful as you are about Batman. Just go with a friend or two and you should enjoy yourself no problem.

When I saw Dark Knight, it was the busiest I've ever seen a movie theater. It was at Montage Mountain and we went to the midnight showing. There were thousands of people, pretty much all screens were Dark Knight havens, and there was a ton of individuals dressed up, making it seem like a mini-ComicCon.

Then when we went in, it was loudest movie theater I had ever been in. Screaming, clapping for every word, insult shouting.

We sat there for the previews, and some dudes thought it'd be hilarious to yell at Harry Potter references the whole time. After the preview for the Terminator movie that sucked, they yelled "FIFTEEN POINTS TO GRYFFINDOR!"

Then when the opening started, it finally got a little more quiet, but still it was loud enough that one would have to talk loudly to hear the person next to you. But then this one guy started screaming some things at the top of his lungs and people got quiet completely and it was just him speaking.

"Let's hear it for Christopher Nolan, director of this fine movie!"

Everyone cheered. Mini-standing ovation.

"Let's hear it for Christian Bale, the Batman himself!"

Everyone cheered, once again.

"And for Heath Ledger, the fuckin' Joker!"

Everyone in complete silence. Crickets. Even signs of disgust. Then after a few more moments of silence the guy yells:

"TOO SOON!?"

Crowd erupts into laughter, we're already eight or so minutes into the movie and I've heard like nothing of the movie. It was like that. And I suspect the ushers were so swamped they didn't know how to police the theaters. It was chaos

Stories like this provide me with one of the few positive aspects of living in England. Never had a movie going "experience" anywhere close to that and most likely never will. Some of the stories from the Avengers thread from Americans sounded horrific.

The fuck? He did that at the very beginning of the movie? What if the movie sucked?

Just got invited to see the movie on the Warner Bros lot on Wednesday. Uh, yeah, I think I'll clear my schedule :)

The Regal in Dublin, CA has 20 midnight showings of this....I have never seen that ever.

Another theater near by has a showing at 12:01, 12:02, 12:03, and 12:04

So ummm, did they CG JGL's face in Looper to make him look more like Willis?

I am hoping for a positive experience—I certainly wouldn't have reserved my seat if I didn't think it were possible! Even if I do end up with a somewhat rowdy crowd, I feel like this is something of an event film so I may as well take a chance and head out. Unfortunately my best friend isn't a Bat-fan and the closest showing is out of town, so this will be a solo venture for me. That said, I'm no stranger to seeing movies by myself and I'm sure the situation favours a good crowd like you said, so all will probably be well.

The theater i'm going to has like 14 showings at midnight. I don't even know how the lines work for something like that. Lines just all over the damn building or what

I remember the midnight release of one of the star wars prequels had the line going all the way around the theater. That's the biggest one i've been to so far, can't really remember any others except LOTR

Nah, it's actual prosthetics. They figured Willis had more star power (even though the script was written with JGL in mind) so they figured it was easier to make JGL look like Willis. It looked terrible at first, but I've gotten used to it.

Just finished watching BB again

Am I the only one who prefers the prototype batsuit over TDK's? I feel like its more menacing.

No, but I personally prefer TDK's suit. Begins's looks ridiculous when he's hiding behind the cape and can't move his fucking neck.

Yeah of course but Bale said they had to change it cause he couldn't breath well and had a headache all the time

Which one? Irvine, Rave, Universal Citywalk? I might end up doing the Edwards in Ontario (about a 40 minute drive for me).

Edwards in Ontario is the one thats not sold out. Only the midnight showing in IMAX and a lot of the regular screens. That is my goto IMAX theater.

I plan on going on the Tuesday after at around 5-6 showing, whenever it is. Shouldn't be too bad.

I don't know, by the time that little incident happened, I was starting to suspect people just wanted to get attention and hear themselves talk. Sort of like the Amir0x of movie theaters.*

Don't tell Amir0x I said that.

You don't think stuff like that happens occasionally in England? Or is there some stronger culture around movie behavior in the UK?

The experience I had was an outlier, I've never had a movie going experience like that before. It was also the first and only midnight showing I ever went to though.

Thankfully, I'm skipping midnight this time... don't want to waste it. It's 3:20pm(EST) on Friday, July 20 @ King of Prussia Stadium. True IMAX, none of that LIEMAX shit. Since it cost $57 just for three of us, no way I'm risking throwing my money into an incinerator.

Yeah I was at the special preview of TDK and got the limited edition lenticular poster. The crowd was going nuts, everytime the joker appeared there was nigh-on hollering. It was quite something.

UK here

I imagine similar things occur at say, Twilight movie midnight releases but those crowds are an entirely different beast. Never have I personally had an experience remotely close to the one you described though; that's with going to Harry Potter, LOTR, Spider-Man, Star Wars and other pretty big franchise opening days, too. Never had applause or anything of the like either.

It definitely seems like a culture thing to me and one that I don't think I'd ever be able to get behind!

Maybe I should just stay away from midnight releases then!

Ugh I hate stuff like that... hope I don't get it at BFI on Friday.

And regarding Amir0x's story about the ill-timed Heath Ledger joke. I didn't think that was offensive anyway - yeah he was dead, but if you're gonna cheer on Christian Bale and Christopher Nolan when they're not there either, they might as well be dead too in the context of the joke. I'm not a fan of people applauding people who are thousands of miles away and can't hear/see them.

I found it hard enough not to rage during The Avengers when people were clapping for every dumb one-liner (and of course there was a ton of them)

Just a note, you guys should use ebay sellers like this.

I get my IMAX tickets for 8$ each every time.

I don't think posting this link is against the TOS here; seems legit.

That's amazing though and I will keep that in mind next time an IMAX film comes. Man it's so refreshing that Batman has no 3D but has the amazing IMAX option with an hour footage shot in the style. IMAX is the true superior future and it's just another small part as to why the Christopher Nolan Batman movies have been such amazing experiences. They just leave me with a smile on my face (which, I can assure you, The Joker did not put there).

Yeah, I go to tons of movies on opening day. I've had a few bad experiences over the years (I go to too many movies to not occasionally stumble upon fools), but never in the same neighborhood at this experience. I mean the noise was irritating as shit, just seemed like everyone was yelling to try to one-up the person next to them who was also yelling.

It definitely seems like a culture thing to me and one that I don't think I'd ever be able to get behind!

I can't get behind it either, it's lame. I don't mind when people laugh even if I don't find something funny. I don't even mind people occasionally leaning over to their friend and commenting on the film a little too loud. But the experience was completely out of control. I saw an usher once ducked into the room and then just left.

Had it been another film i wasn't particularly passionate about I would have found it annoying too, but this was a fan showing; twice the price of typical showings. So it was typically full of Batman nuts like me. It was worth it for the atmosphere alone to be honest

Just booked tickets for the midnight showing. Gotta love that NZ timezone. Welcome to the future; we have shit before you do.

I'm in Melbourne, Australia and seeing it at 12.01am on Thursday 19 July - is that before or after you? My knowledge of intl timezones is lacking!

I am. This year I'm going to King of Prussia Stadium 16 & IMAX, and I'm also not going at Midnight like I did for Dark Knight. I suspect that'll fix it.

I'm also going to arrive two hours early so I can get non-horrendous seats.

25 pounds of muscle in eight weeks? dat hgh.

Havent you seen the ads, if anything i took him 2 weeks longer than the picture showed, should have tried the super secret formula known only to the pros!
