The Pokemon Company suing Sword & Shield leakers, citing "irreparable injury" to the franchise

Lawyers for the Pokémon game developer are hunting down unidentified individuals in America who leaked Sword and Shield game information before release, a new lawsuit has revealed.
Pokémon Company International is particularly peeved at those who posted pictures of previously unseen Pokémon from the Sword and Shield strategy guide across Discord and 4Chan earlier this month. The pictures were also shared on mainstream social networks social media like Facebook, Twitter and Imgur, as well as popular video game sites Polygon and Dot Esports. In total, the developer found 300 web pages across "dozens of platforms that linked to websites containing the leaked Strategy Guide pictures," according to the suit.

Lawyers from Perkins Coie (a firm previously hired by Google and other tech giants) wrote that the leaks had caused "irreparable injury" to Pokémon and the company "is entitled to damages in an amount to be proven at trial."

Pokémon Company International isn't suing any named individuals as yet,
simply naming the defendants as "John/Jane Does" in its suit, posted Friday. It has identified four Discord users, though, after it hired outside forensic experts to hunt down the leakers. However, as it hasn't been able to identify the real people behind the monikers, Pokémon wants to serve subpoenas on Discord and 4chan to get their help in tracking down the leakers. It's awaiting the court's decision.

Reminder these games sold six million copies in a matter of days and are the fastest-selling Switch games so far.

you.

This is good news. Despite the leaks not affecting other peoples, they didn't need to see the disappointment this early. They should have never leaked the games. Now it happened. Hopefully this will tell other leakers to stop leaking.

I'm not sure what you mean by this?

Reviews for this game were embargoed very close to launch, resulting in a limited number of reviews prior to the game's release, and even then most of those reviews not even touching on the game's major issues. The leaks were incredibly useful for actually demonstrating the game's lack of quality.

Pokemon aways leak(remember S/M starter leaks?). So this to me sounds more like they wanted to hide all the bad the game has and are blaming the leakers for what is nothing but their own damn fault.

I was actually referring to the leaks not happening. They shouldn't have happened at all, and clearly, to be honest, I'd have just preferred that the peoples see the game on launch instead of looking at the leaks (I know that you don't have to look at leaks or spoilers, but I'm talking about them NOT happening). But because the leaks happened, they whined even more. I wouldn't be surprised if there was no leaks in a next Pokemon game.

Judge: The leaks of the strategy guide did irreparable injury to the franchise, how?

TPC: It showed parts of our game.

Judge: How would that do irreparable damage to your game. It is showing part of the game that you yourself the plaintiff created?

TPC: Well you see....

Judge: Is the game bad?

TPC: Fuck

GameFreak perpetrated the shit storm that was Dexit. I’m curious for next year if they will continue to Dexit and snap half of Pokemon.

Good thing I don’t do any Pokémon games because I hate seeing companies that go after guys that leak stuff that does no damage.
How exactly is GF going to say it suffered “irreparable injury” after selling 6 million copies inn the first week alone?

So you would rather people not know the truth about the cut content and lack of quality? i'm glad the leaks happened, because it opened the eyes to many, im sure, when they could have wasted money on this. I do know personally some people that didnt want to support gamefreak anymore after seeing what they have done with gen 8 and were glad they saw that before buying the games.

I don't think leaks benefit anybody really. (apart from the famed "gaming journalist")
It's not like leaking it early would change the quality of the game.

What does it matter if you get convince to not buy the game before or after release ?
Really... that's just people not doing they due diligence and pre-ordering the game in advance.
It only damage people who pre-ordered the game who should justly be punished for pre-ordering a game in the first place.

It doesn't matter if the leak did damage or not, that's a not legal requirement for what the leakers did.
What kind of justice system would that be if we judge criminals by how successful they are. (that's the Donald Trump current defense)

If it takes Nintendo to push against this practice, so be it.

If Nintendo lied on their advertising, sue them for that.
(Feel free to abuse the wonderful US justice system /s)

I'd like to see how they argue that these leaks caused "irreparable injury to the franchise"

.... This has got to be one of the most moronic companies on the planet. They could give 90s Atari a run for their money.

If they had any sense they would shut up and pretend the franchise disappointment never happened. A lawsuit will remind people for months about how disappointing the games ended up being.

I didn't end up buying sword and shield because of their attitude and I certainly wasn't the only one.

It's funny how they're trying to switch attention to other things like leaks, instead of a state of the shit game they just released

Irreparable damages caused by terrible quality games, not by leaks
Start putting more effort in the - iirc - most profitable series ever, and then We'll talk again

This shows the backlash about the game has really got to them. But instead of admitting fault and promising to improve in the future they are beings stubborn and going on the attack. It is really sad and pathetic to see.

Kind of an odd strategy for winning back consumer goodwill but let’s see how it pays off.

More people would've been mad if the game didn't have no leaks, now what they are doing to the leakers isn't gonna make it any better.

Over 6 million plus copies sold? Would hardly say it's irreparable damage TPC. If anything, a huge chunk of consumers bought into the same formula yet again! Reactions from long-term fans and the media on the other hand? Well that's a different story:

Lowest rated mainline pokemon game by critics in almost a decade? Check!
More lambasted by fans on social media post-release than even Pokemon Let's Go? Double Check!

When even journalists aren't handing out high eights and nines like candy, you know people are less tolerant of recycled shit!

Oh? And the early leaks of the pokedex's missing roster? We already knew that there'd be cuts months before the games release. So that influx of info? Pretty non-consequential in the long run when you think about it! Nintendo and Game Freak sure as hell weren't spilling the beans on the specifics of cut features, pokemon, etc, so yeah, they can go ride a dick for all I care. Total overreaction, if anything they should go after the retailers who sold the Pokemon S/S strategy guide early, which is where most of the information came from!

can someone tl;dr why the hate on sword and shield? I must have missed it
Cliffnotes Version:

- Game Freak said they removed a gigantic chunk of pokemon from this game to create better models and animations for each one which ended up being a lie: They're practically identical in polygonal/tri structure complexity to the last 3DS iterations, Sun and Moon, which had WAY more pokemon than this game, they just slapped better textures on them, and the move animations are still just as primitive and lacking as always.

- Even the trainer and NPC animations are lifted and recycled out of Sun and Moon as well.

- Shortest pokemon game to play through in a long time. Extremely light on meaningful content even compared to the DS/3DS games.

- A complete ignorance to push the series in a new and refreshing direction or adding game-changing features and tweaks despite having vastly more powerful hardware than previous systems.

- Terrible online play when teaming up with randoms. Raids are inconsistent to join as well unless you're playing with friends.

Let me get this straight.

They're mad because they tried pulling a sneaky on everyone with marketing but it failed because "muh leaks" so they want compensation for making a bad game. The "damage" is entirely self inflicted by the product itself.

What if the leaks had gone in their favor?
