For real. They have utterly butchered this series. They did Heroes of Might and Magic even dirtier though. That series has died a slow death since HOMM5 onward and is now completely destroyed.

The series peaked at 3rd instalment if you asked me and seems like it wasn't able to get back on track ever since. But I noticed this applies to all 2D RTS that transformed into 3D - C&C, Starcraft, Dune, AoE, Settlers etc., they all lost that original charm once they moved to 3D.

I basically agree. With an exception. I hold a special place and love for C&C Tiberium Wars. It still holds up today. It's an example of 3d done right.
I also love how Anno transitioned into 3d. 1404 was gorgeous, perhaps even more so than 1800. At least to me.

I think they always looked well, even Generals, Tiberium Wars and RA3.
The problem was they lost their charm in gameplay imo, especially RA3.
C&C is about harvesting vast gold/tiberium fields with harvesters (give us a Dune RTS). Not building a mine on a deposit like in SC to gather resources.
The C&C series also never increased in scale and never allowed you to fully zoom out.
I think the series/devs would do well by looking at how RA2 and Tiberian Sun with mods look at 1080p plus because it gives you a nice view of the battlefield. The units, especially infantry are still just big enough to be easily recognised as well.
Tiberian Sun is the best looking C&C game when just modded for higher res, style and lighting effects are god tier for an old game.
EDIT: Put a better 1080p video instead of 720p potato quality.

I just wish they went back to Settlers 3 formula for the game (although i probably still prefer S2). They tried to reinvent the wheel with each sequel which ended up feeling nothing like Settlers by the 7th installment (which was absolutely horrible).

Every once in a while I check to see if you can buy HOMM7, or as they now refer to it, Might and Magic Heroes 7? They hide that from their main ubisoft app, and you have to go to their website where you have to pay like $60 to buy it.

The death of HOMM is one of the worst franchise deaths in all of PC gaming; right up there with Sim City.

Really? I for one found Settlers 7 to be the best game since 4. At least once Ubisoft pulled back on all the online "community" bullshit.

Sure its a bit different and the story is a joke. but the actual gameplay isn't bad.
