5/10 movie. I leave theater thinking "I wonder who the 3 people who've written every Hollywood blockbuster over the last 20 years looks like...

I’m so hyped to see this tomorrow, especially because it’ll be a first-date with this girl I’m really into I matched with via online dating. She loves the original too and is hyped for the sequel as well.

Hope tomorrow will be a memorable day for multiple reasons… 🤞

Good luck. If she's a big fan of the original, I think you'll be in good shape.

Thanks for the kind words all. I’m not one to put the cart before the horse, but should we play the Top Gun Anthem and Take My Breath Away at our future wedding? Jk, ish.

Either way, I’ll have a good time tomorrow 👌.

I took a girl on a first date and we saw The Nutty Professor, we were together for 5 years. Correlation between good movie and date debunked.

movie was awesome in IMAX. weird to see something in media being positive towards the US, that now that's what's subversive.

one thing that's really incredible is the casting feels nostalgic to the original Top Gun but only Cruise and Kilmer have returned.

Also, they reversed the change for the worldwide release and put back the actual Japan and Taiwan flags, but maybe it was always their intention.

Just got back, what a blast. Real old school feeling blockbuster, wore its cheese on its sleeve and blew the roof off when it needed to, perfectly suited to IMAX.

Easily as good as the original if not better, and by far one of the best sequels ever.

Welp, this didn’t age well at all; she postponed/canceled on me.

Not to let it completely ruin my day, I went ahead and watched the movie anyway and fucking loved it! Love how it paid tribute to the original with its opening. I teared up a few times throughout the movie. Can’t wait to watch it again, at home in UHD.

Sucks but you probably....

Saw TGM today and it was pretty damned good. If anything, it suffers for the TG callbacks outside of Iceman. The "New crew" and the Top Gun framing device, such as it was, just slowed the cruise missile down.

I'm sure some navy guys can deconstruct the actual mission but the cinematography....wow.

got some tickets for Dolby Theater viewing with my dad today. big comfortable recliner seats and great sounds. Top Gun was one of the earliest movies I watched with him so this holds a special nostalgic value for us. and it did not disappoint. the movie hits all the right notes for me and everything feels pretty natural on first viewing. I was very invested in the story and there's a lot of holding my hands in excitement kinda moments. best movie of the year so far for me and definitely worth viewing in theater on the big screen.

Brought my parents to watch it this weekend. Neither of them have been to the theater in years. Watching their excitement during the movie was like watching two kids experiencing movies on the big screen for the first time. This was the perfect movie for lapsed movie goers to return to the theaters.

Loved it. Gave me all the feels. Here’s a movie where all the callbacks were fine and all the updates were perfect. Essentially everything you’d want in a sequel

Really enjoyed it. I think 80s and 90s kids who really likes the first one will enjoy all the callbacks.

Main issue was the relative lack of bangers. They did reuse some music from the OG film of course but the other songs will not go down as classics. Also the sex scene was barely that

Saw it in IMAX today.

One of the best sequels of all time. The original Top Gun isn't even that great, but Maverick is a triumph. One of the most "pure" action blockbusters I've seen in a long time. A crowd-pleaser through and through, with exhilarating action scenes and endearing character interactions. Classy callbacks to the original.

In a sea of cynical Hollywood garbage, Maverick is exactly what we needed. Can't remember the last time I had such a good experience at the theater. Even The Batman didn't leave as good of an impression.

Just saw it in IMAX, amazing movie and the flying scenes were so damn good. I'm still processing it but Jesus Christ this is how you do a sequel that pays tribute to it's predecessor and not shit on it.
Maverick should inform sequels going forward. If only the Star Wars sequels were done with that level of respect.

Maverick is the polar opposite of Luke Skywalker throwing the blue lightsaber over his shoulder, and that's why people love it.

Yeah, the music wasn't the star. What did Lady Gaga contribute?

And sadly, as beautiful as she is, I think Jennifer Connelly is so thin these days her once bodacious nungas are probably shriveled flappy dungs unless she trimmed them up quite a bit. So no steamy sex scene is probably for the best.

I mean, I’m not really looking for the senior citizen coitus as a rule, but she looks fucking great and I’d still be down…

Two new tracks I really like from the soundtrack - the darkstar theme and the song that played during the beach scene.

Haven’t seen it yet since I cant get babysitters, but I rewatched the first one. I had totally forgotten that Meg Ryan was in that movie which was stupid as she totally steals every scene that she is in. Does she cameo in the sequel?

Nope. Only cruise and Kilmer reprise. They could had some others since Top Gun was a crucible of young talent with many still working today, but nope.

Hell, they had to cast ancient Ed Harris just to make 60 something Cruise and Kilmer seem more spry by comparison. Poor John Hamm seems like a kid in the room with these guys :p

I feel like there was more Rooster stuff that got cut, scenes with his mom were probably written, if never filmed.

She's dead at this point. Cruise said that she died.
Sure, but that could have been a later rewrite. I feel like this script aged out everyone. Rooster is pushing 40! when he should have been 30 at the oldest.

It's kinda vague when she died. Before he applied to the academy TWENTY years ago making him a teenage orphan really fucked over by mav or did she die later, taking her involvement in retarding her sons career to the grave with her?

Anyway, I bet they considered a flashback or something, maybe even Anthony Edwards doing some Mustafa shit, but thankfully kept it mav focused even if It kneecapped roosters character. The entire third act was so rushed I think we were seeing multiple script evolutions on screen.

So my 3 year old wanted to go with me to pick up dinner tonight. On the way home I decided to put on Danger Zone and said “this was daddy’s favorite song as a little boy.”

It finished as we pulled into the driveway and I got “daddy let’s listen again in the house really loud!”

It’s those moments…

That One Republic beach song is great. Not totally cheesy but still very irreverent. Although it would have been funny to break out Playin With the Boys again.

What a genuine suprise: Top Gun 2 was... amazing! Like other's have said, it's one of the best sequels ever made. Perfect blend of new elements/continuation of the story and fan service. It was surprisingly emotional as well. There is a catch, though: you need to have seen and enjoyed the first movie, otherwise it's probably not for you.
A movie like that is rare: usually, sequels to 30 year old movies don't deliver enough or just plain suck (*cough*Star Wars), but this one is truly a worthy sequel to Top Gun.

Big opening weekend is well earned.

Hopefully this will lead Hollywood back towards more traditional non-CGI laden action fare. Even Bay's Ambulance, which is a ridicuous shit-fest of a film, is more visually interesting to watch than most MCU films because it's real cars and helicopters flying around. If Bay could just stop spinning the camera around so much in dialogue scenes (and if that dialogue was actually interesting) he would make much better films. It's nice to know that he can still frame some human action after all those years of jumbling jangly transformers nonsense.

Man this film was fucking fire, fucking great. So intense and emotional. The whole 3rd act was sublime!!!!

The people calling it boring, did you watch a cam rip on your laptop with shitty speakers or something?
