OK, so got my Wii U today, ZombiU Premium Pack along with New Super Mario Bros Wii U. First impressions...
Positives
+ Large, clear and bright screen on the GamePad
+ Nintendo games
finally in HD!
+ New Super Mario Bros is charming, magical, colourful and beautiful. I've wanted an HD 2D Mario Bros ever since my first HDTV.
Negatives
- Moving between different applications on the Home menu takes way, way too long - even if it's just the Settings menu!
- Downloading stuff takes way too long, eg the update
- Moving between the GamePad and my beautiful GT50 is distracting for me - can't imagine how distracting and confusing this might be for the 'casual' gamers the original Wii brought in. Even during setup, I was getting in a muddle about where I should be looking. And I'm a Computing graduate and a seasoned gamer of 25 years! Perhaps just not a very good one
- Can't turn the display off on the GamePad. Really, really, really annoying and distracting. Playing NSMBU, I can see the mirrored display out of the bottom of my eyes all the time and it's irritating as anything. Even with the display brightness turned down it's an annoyance. Even more annoying in a dim room this evening too. Why no option to turn the display off when you're playing the game on the TV!? Simple stuff, Nintendo. Simple stuff.
- So this supports three different controllers. GamePad, Wiimote and Pro Controller. So I thought the Pro Controller could be the solution to be aforementioned problem. Unfortunately I can't use the Pro Controller with NSMBWU - why oh why? So, yes it supports Wiimotes. But my ZombiU Premium pack didn't come with a Wiimote, Nintendo. It did, however, come with a Pro Controller.
- No demos on the eShop for the downloadable games. Come on, Nintendo! Wake up.
- No analogue sticks on the Pro Controller, seems a little backward.
- The rumble on the GamePad is definitely
not rumble. That's vibrate. Noisy mobile vibrate.
OK, so a bit whiney I know. I'm sorry, but I'm just somewhat disappointed I'll be honest. Perhaps if I hadn't owned a 360 and PS3 for the past 6-7 years and I was upgrading from a Wii then I'd be feeling more positive. Either way it's early days and the real reason I bought this is simple: Nintendo games in HD. So, bring on more of the games Nintendo, quickly and without so much of a drought. And I'll be a happy bunny.
