Oh, did I not make it obvious enough.

noun
1.
Psychiatry . a person who has the condition of sadism, in which one receives sexual gratification from causing pain and degradation to another.
2.
a person who enjoys being cruel.

It's almost like Sadist enjoys seeing us suffer or something.

Graphics are important though. They just aren't the most important.

Being able to see that asswart hair is crucial. It's going to be its own category in next-gen video game reviews. IGN will bash the next Mario game on this measure. While we'll be able to see plenty of detail on the goombas, if we can't tell precisely what kind of hair is growing out of a goomba's asswart, the game will no longer a viable candidate for their super-duper-prestigious Game of the Year Award. It's that important.

Watch and see, I tells ya!

I wanna play Kid Icarus Uprising on Wii U. Nintendo better have a player thingy available for Wii U.

I don't think that the hardware is similar enough (or … faster … enough) for that to work. They could try recompiling the 3DS games for the Wii U, but I don't think they'd let you have that for free. :P

It's a shame they came out of the Nintendo camp because all of GAF needs to learn and love the bears. Only on GAF will a bit of chipped paint create an E3 legend.

I'm so glad I was around to see the birth of the bear, it was...beautiful really.
Never in my life have I seen such a birth so well executed and, it just brought a tear to my eye. The most beautiful birth I have ever seen.

The asswart hair thesis was a crucial development of Spec Thread 3. It will be cited among Locke, Hobbes and Burke someday. :P

...wait, mushrooms have asses?

First megaton of the thread in my mind.

Or were you making fun of my Italian heritage? D:

ahh lurking during e3 and seeing the creation of weinerpoop last year was magical lol.

oh and the hilarious gifs XD

Man Sadist took a real dump on our faces. This horrific thread title will be on the front page for days before the next one needs to be created.

Nintendo are right - graphics aren't important.
We have reached a level now where the graphics are "good enough" and we're rapidly hitting a wall.

this is exactly the same line we heard with the Wii though.

I agree that gameplay isn't bounded by graphics but it would be nice to have -both- from Nintendo at the same time again.

Of course, this hinges on the rumours about the Wii U and it may well be a case of nintendo orchestrated managed expectations as it's much better to shoot past the bleak rumours than to match up to crazy hyperbole

(also - the X360/PS3 are -really- showing their age and have been for some time, i'm hoping for at least a bump with Wii U)

Goombas are mushrooms??

Goombas are goombas.
And they have asswart hair.
And if we can't see said hair rendered such that it is blowing along in the direction of the wind in realtime,
the game is garbage.

1Up and GameSpot won't even consider such a game for any of their year-end awards.
I really, really hope that Nintendo has kept this in mind when choosing components for their new console.

In fact, I hope that we get to see a demonstration on stage at E3, just to assuage peoples' fears about lousy hardware. It's the safest thing for Nintendo to do.

Goombas are goombas.

Frankly, as somebody who was recently scarred by accidentally leaving a sugared and lemoned iced tea in the back of a fridge for months then discovering what a gallon-sized fungus looks like…

Well, more detailed goombas would actually add to the experience. In fact, I think it'd be creepier than any Resident Evil or Fatal Frame game.

Marching Milde's are kinda like fungus. (Mildew is fungus, right?)

I can see it now...

IGN Mario Universe review:

...........conclusion:

While the mechanics of this Mario title are the best yet for the series and perhaps the best use of the upad so far, We cant help but think what Nintendo may have achieved on the 720 or ipad5. Mario looks better than ever before but lack of real time hair physics and tessellated overalls forces us to wonder what might have been.

6.5/10

Nintendo certainly doesn't focus too much on graphics but they always have amazing art direction in their games. I think and hope that the Wii U will have just enough juice to enhance the art so that their exclusives will look just as good, if not better, than the competitions' (Durango and Orbis).

So realistic. I mean, you nailed the language. And the score.. appropriately harsh. The only thing it needed was a mention that Mario's online features were lacking, and that the game therefore felt incomplete. Because every game has to have online these days. :)

Seriously, we're at the point where artistic style matters more than anything else when we're talking about visual power. It can be as tesselated and anti-aliased as possible, but if the art style that the developers chose is butt-ugly? Pass.

I just want to be able to triple jump and fly openly in a massive, massive world. The pop-up and framerate issues on every open world game on PS3/360 really hurt me.

Say, I brought this up during thread 3, but it was right before a big news item popped up, and I think it got lost in the swarm.

If Nintendo made a truly wireless display-less controller (that is, a next generation CCP but without tethering) for the Wii U, would it be a dealbreaker for any of you if it used the DRC layout (that is, analogs above the face buttons)?

I'm curious if anybody would prefer sticking with the tethered CCP.

Not having used a Subscreen I can't really say but I'd imagine it wouldn't bother me. Then again I don't play Smash Bros and that's where people seem to really really care about the controller. Quite frankly I don't mind my CCP being attached to my Wiimote.

That's up to the developer, not necessarily the console. My favourite open world game from the 1980s, Starflight had no pop-up or frame rate issues, and it ran on 0.01 GHz single core processors with 0.000640 GB RAM. A developer who truly wants to push polygons will eventually reach those issues on consoles far faster than what we're getting in the next generation.

Though, I'm the same way.

I love it when you talk dirty.....

Would you prefer the raccoon leaf, the cape, or the cap? :)

I'm thinking that I would like to see the cape return. There are some really badass things that could be implemented in 3D space this time around. And let's see some big keys return from SMB2 and 3 again, along with secret exits from each world.

Heck, I wouldn't mind seeing essentially 3D versions of either one of those games. Standing on a Birdo Egg as it sails across an enormous ocean. Digging through sand to find a hidden chamber where there's an extra life mushroom. Collecting enough cherries to get a Starman at just the right time. Piling blocks high enough for you to reach that platform up above. It'd be so incredible.

You're unnervingly bristly today, Tom. ;)
Sorry. I really don't mean to be, especially around my Nintendo peeps. You guys are awesome, and I really enjoy the time here. Thanks for the heads-up.

As far as I know, the subscreen is wireless

... their 9.7/10 and 10/10 for Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 respectively doesn't deter you at all?

I wasn't talking about the DRC. I was talking about a new, untethered equivalent to the CCP and whether or not having nubs above the face buttons would bug anybody enough to stick with the old CCP.

Edit: Pre-emptively speaking, if anybody is wondering why somebody would use a controller other than the DRC, the answer is "local multiplayer", which is like half my personal console gaming time.

WHAT!? a 9.7 for Super Mario Galaxy and a 10 for Galaxy 2!? That's preposterous. Easily a 10 for the first, and a 15 for Galaxy 2. God IGN, do you even know how to rate games anymore?

No, no. :P Just sound a little weary of all the negativity, and I don't blame you.

Nah, they were definitely 9.4355664.

CCP looks really soviet to me...

As for a screenless control with the same buttons and sliding pads, I would pass. I don't really see the advantage.

Just to clarify, I'm not talking about as an alternative to the DRC. I'm talking about in circumstances where you'd normally use the Classic Controller, like in the asymmetric multiplayer scenarios where one person used the display and three others had to use other controllers (since the system can't currently stream to multiple DRCs).

I can get incredibly sharp-tongued on some topics, especially concerning the direction of the industry, what makes a "good" game, and big-picture issues of that nature. You have no idea how often I type something and then hit the 'Back' button. It's definitely for the better. :)

As far as the U goes? I still remain very buoyant about what to expect from E3 and Launch. This is going to be a fantastic year.

I would love to see Nintendo make a return to Battle Clash, the Super Scope game for SNES.

I honestly believe the series can be revitalized for the WiiU with the asymmetrically gameplay design of the Pad and the TV.

The pad could act has the independent firing/aiming mechanism, allowIng players to view and shoot what is not visible on the TV, and the TV would display your surrounding and where you travel.

The pad would be in First Person View and the TV would be third person.
