There a distinct lack of bears.
There is a distinct lack of bears in that image.
By my count, something "everyone wants them to make" means
New IP (especially FPS/TPS)
Metroid (3D)
Metroid (2D)
Donkey Kong (2D)
Donkey Kong (3D)
Star Fox
F-ZERO
Kid Icarus
Star Tropics
Zelda
Raven Blade revival
so it doesn't really narrow things too much.
Pretty much my thoughts also BP people will always bitch![]()
Didn't it pass one million copies world wide? I remember reading it somewhere, and that isn't too far off with how Metroid usually performs. So how did it bomb hard?Bolded aren't going to sell. I can't see Nintendo wasting Retro on something that doesn't have huge potential to move not only software, but hardware.
Metroid is possible but as I mentioned before, I think Nintendo is going to chill with that franchise for a while. Other M bombed hard.
Kid Icarus is Sakurai's baby now. And it should stay that way.
It's not going to be Donkey Kong.
I'm leaning towards new IP. Aimed at dudebros. It's a huge market that Nintendo hasn't touched at all.
Considering the popularity of Uncharted and Skyrim, a realistic Western take on Zelda done by Retro has the potential to sell a fuck ton. Console Zelda is more or less dead in Japan (Skyward Sword bombed), while it sold pretty damn well over in the West. EAD could focus on a new 3DS Zelda (Japan still loves their portables!), and leave the console iteration to Retro, in hopes of grabbing more of that huge Western audience.
But being spoiled as they are, I can't really see Nintendo giving their baby to Retro. New dudebro IP it is!
Hey, let's all take bets on how long after the end of Nintendo's conference it'll be before someone makes a thread ragging on Wii U's "current gen graphics"?I say less than 2.5 hours.

Wario64.
Mark. My. Word.
The vast majority of gamers have never played those games, or even Little King's Story.
But I guess you can believe the industry has way too many games like that. I mean, that's what, 4 whole franchises and 6 games?
Only two of which that had a decently sized audience.

And Nintendo isn't that stupid. They know that Metroid Other M took a different approach than Metroid Prime and the Prime games have sold pretty well.
"We believe that it could be, should be a million unit title," Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime told Kotaku in an interview this morning. "We're not going to get there, not through the holiday. And we are doing a lot of thinking as to why. Because it's a great game. The consumer reaction because of the quality has been strong. We're doing a lot of thinking about why we didn't get there. I think the marketing was strong, advertising was very good, the social media we did was very positive."
Fils-Aime said the game is "getting close to half a million" copies sold in the U.S. That's no flop, but it's also not a blockbuster. I pushed him on the portrayal of Samus since that's the loudest criticism I've seen of the game. The graphics were very good, the gameplay was a throwback to earlier Metroid games. But Samus, some people just couldn't stand how she was portrayed and complained about it here in Kotaku's comments as well as in reviews in other outlets.
I feel like we heard similar disappointment from Nintendo about the sales of the later Metroid Prime games, which, since I'm already linking to my Other M review, I might as well say I loved. Three of my favorite games.
I'll leave it to others to figure out what didn't go right. I just wanted to know from Fils-Aime if he thought the Metroid series has a future.
"I certainly hope so," he said. "I'm a passionate fan of Samus and the Metroid series."
I don't think the division is made up. There are clearly a segment of gamers who aren't like other segments of gamers. Casual gamers gravitate toward certain types of games, for the most part. While the "hardcore" crowd will gravitate towards lots of types.
I think the words Casual and Hardcore are kind of stupid, but there is definitely a division in the types of people that own consoles. Most Wii Owners were clearly in the division that gravitates only to a specific type of titles and not much else.
The question is: do you go through them like a policeman goes through donuts?
If so, I suggest you find another genre to deplete, maybe RPGs, and you could summon the Dark Brotherhood apparition to do your bidding.
Why cling to a franchise that hasn't seen the light of day since 2004 and only has a niche following?
The hope for Pimkin 3 is dead, give it up. There is no game god.
The cute little aliens won't be DAY 1 for the audience, we need bleeding blades.
I'd agree if I didn't already know that the games mostly referred to as "casual" would be referred to as "arcade" in previous generations.
I'm telling you, guys.
E3 2012.
Destruction.
EVERYWHERE!
Iwata will destroy everything you hold dear!
Ichor stole my answer. It's going to be a generation-long deal, so we might as well get used to it.
But wasn't this quote from 2010?Ask Reggie:
I have a hard time believing it sold 500k outside of North America. Prime 1 sold 1.5 million copies in North America alone. God damn.
Bolded aren't going to sell. I can't see Nintendo wasting Retro on something that doesn't have huge potential to move not only software, but hardware.
It'll happen during the conference.

I'd like to point out that Pyro is referring to gamers, not games in his definition of "hardcore" and "casual". This is a really, really, really important distinction. Almost any game can be played in a hardcore fashion, and most games can be played casually. It's the users and their specific habits that make the distinction, not the content or difficulty level of the game.
When he stated "they just want their wii sports and their mario and they are fine", you could easily drop in other words, like "they just want their Call of Duty and their Madden and they are fine".
A good Star Fox could sell as a launch title. Hell, I'd buy a console for it. I don't think we can say it wouldn't sell just because a bunch of shovelware trash didn't sell and an overpriced N64 port didn't sell.
But wasn't this quote from 2010?
Wouldn't that mean that the game could have silently sold 100k between January 2011 and now in NA, and a bit more in Japan/EU due to the sales that the game had?
What Nintendo should do... show 360 graphics first..
Cue the "Wow... The graphics sux0rz!" comments.
Then Nintendo shows the Wii U version, which is clearly better.
Double win.
I think that if Nintendo had shown Samaritan instead of Epic, everyone would talk about how unimpressive it is.
I would too. But Star Fox doesn't have much commercial appeal. To Nintendo, Star Fox 64 3D bombing=consumers have no interest in a Star Fox game.
A lot of people already do so it wouldn't all that surprising.
They really need to make a modern day version. I want to see Nintendo play dirty.
Like Reggie at E3 2004.
Speaking of which, I'M STREAMING THE NINTENDO E3 2004 PRESS CONFERENCE TOMORROW. Get your bodies ready.

The E3 bear left us a message on Twitter.
Is that the one with the twilight princess collective orgasm?

I must have missed that. When was this confirmed for the Wii U?

As far as Retro, I only want them to do an original IP. If they're doing Zelda hopefully it's a spinoff... starring Shiek. Zelda/Darksiders with the stereotypical ninja maneuvers.

MS, Sony can be spoilers if they released CG videos of their next gen games. It will play right into the idea that WiiU is weak.

Yes, yes it is. DVD quality.
I was thinking 4PM EST. How's that for everyone? Too early maybe?
How is this thread 17 pages already? :s
Has there been actual new info?
