WSJ: Here Comes 'Halo 3' -With a Side Order of Fries, 1 million pre-orders confirmed

Dude it is a tribute to GAF. How can you not like it?

I like that aspect...but from a marketing perspective..."Finish the Fight" paints a picture that this is the final chapter of an epic trilogy. Ie. it's a game you can't miss. It's paints a picture that all loose ends will be wrapped up, and that this is the toughest most action packed game yet. Or something like that. :P

GAF fancies itself entirely too important sometimes. Is it really a tribute to GAF? I mean, really? REALLY, GAF?

It's actually a tribute to Cher. Just pray Marty's Karaoke version doesn't make the soundtrack.

I think it's going to be huge. 2 million is a fifth of the 360's user base. Do you know four 360 owners who aren't going to buy it? If you're into online play, it's going to be the game showing up in everyone's play list, every day for awhile. MS has done phenomenally tapping into "their" demographic (ie: the hive), and Halo is the core of their demographic. I think it's going to be huge beyond most people's expectations.

we have 4p co-op, so that guarantees 4x the sales, right?

Personally, I am staying grounded in the fact that the 360 is way less far into its lifespan than the Xbox was when H2 came out. I am not going to predict squat. Wait and see and roll with it.
Well one thing to consider is that when Halo 2 came out, a Halo already existed for the same system: Halo 1. Most Halo 2 buyers already owned an Xbox because of that.

The case seems to be different this time. There has been no Halo on the 360 yet, and it seems that a fairly large portion of Halo 3 preorders are from people who haven't bought a 360 yet. I believe Halo 3 is going to move more 360s than Halo 2 moved Xboxs because of this same reasoning.

how many copies did halo 2 sell on day 1

According to GameDaily:

Update: According to new data revealed today, Microsoft is now reporting that Halo 2 recorded $125 million on day one, easily surpassing their $100 million estimate. The publisher sold 2.38 million units in North America.

edit: beaten :(

I don't think that 400,000 or 600,000 Legendary Eds can sell on day one. I think they'll be available weeks after release if you look around a bit. And I think they'll be selling at a discount on eBay. One of my dickhead Game Crazy clerks has preordered three with the intent of selling at least two on eBay. Like with PS3, there will probably be way more speculators than demand.

I actually do have H3 preordered, but I still say if you are spending over $100 on one game this fall, it should be Ace Combat 6 with the joystick.

I'm going to have to predict that there will be more Halo 3 Legendary Editions sold than total copies of Ace Combat 6 this fall.

There's a duct-tape joke in there somewhere, I just can't find it.

I don't care how many pre-orders there are. If the game sucks, it's getting burned in a pit of fire in the backyard and join it's relatives.

2.4m in the US.

It's worth noting that more than just the US get this game on the 25th, and it hits Europe on the 26th. So the first numbers we get might reflect world-wide sales, making for a tough comparison.

In terms of revenue, Halo 2 sold for $50 and $55. Halo 3 sells for $60, $70 and $130. The installed base of the 360 is about 1/3 smaller than the Xbox when Halo 2 launched. But total dollars - and maybe even units - will be larger.

No clue how much though. Part of that depends on how the installed base grows between now and then, and on launch day.

Not surprising.

Brilliant game + even better marketing.

damn thats alot. doubt halo 3 will meet that. dint they say halo 3 had 4 million preorders, or am i on crack

You're on crack if you believed that.

4 million was straight up made up, and it's 2.4 million day 1 for Halo 2.

Am I the only one who finds Microsoft's faith in Halo Hype a little "pretentious"?

I mean, there are lots of other popular games.

You should be flattered that your "believe" catchphrase is now plastered all over some burger joint. First GAF, now this.

You've come a long way baby!

halo 2 had 1 million pre orders by a month before its launch. So its about a month and 3 weeks and halo 3 has reached 1 million. Halo 3 is doing better so far.

All of this hype has caused the original XBOX to gain the 100 spot on Amazon. It is coming back bitches.

Per this source, which I believe to be accurate, over 10.5 million Xbox systems had been sold through to consumers in America as of November 2004 (Halo 2 release).

I like a good Whopper, no cheese, but those fries are ass.

Well, that's a no-brainer, of course you are correct.

Wow, I didn't know that. And as we speak, Halo 3 has jumped to the #4 spot on Amazon's list.

Preorders are ramping up.

Well, that's interesting, didn't know that. Considering this is going to be pretty much a world wide launch, it's going to be big.

The 360 should be over 6m by the time Halo 2 launches, so close to the 1/3 less that I was guesstimating. Thanks for digging that up. It might be for this reason that MS could decide to report WW day-one sales (after each territory has had a day) than just the US, for PR purposes.

I preordered halo 3, and I know at least 3 people that did not and are buying on day 1. So if that's any indication of potential sales...

I remember when Burger King had it's promotial tie in with Return of the Jedi, and they sold cups made out of glass. I had one with Jabba and Bikini Leia. That's what I want. I hate plastic cups. Step it up Bungie! I think a Gravemind/Cortana glass would do really well.
