Xbox has announced a multi-year agreement with AMD to co-engineer new silicon chips for the next-generation of Xbox consoles

Nothing new here really. Console was already confirmed. Multiyear deal with AMD isn't exactly a shocker.
What a rollercoaster though with the thread a couple of days ago that Xbox was canceled and people dancing in the streets to now those people are, well, where are they now?

I'm there day one for both the new Xbox and the new Ally. I'm going balls deep. Love the ecosystem and the ability to play my massive ass back catalog of games and perhaps even better.

This wasn't an unveling. Just announcing a partnership.
Okay why wasn't this partnership announcement shown at the summer showcase?

The timing is weird. Why a random Tuesday? Is Sony or Valve about to unveil something?

Anyhow if shown at the showcase it would've changed the talk.

Around the summer showcase there was talk that they would just do ROG Ally like design collaborations going forward. They called the Ally an Xbox and their internal Xbox handheld had been sidelined. Hmm.

This partnership and how the video was put together shows that they're still focused on doing hardware. It's not as direct as the Scorpio unveil but it's similar in how they essentially say "Hey don't forget about us! We're still out there and we're building something awesome! More details will come soon! Stay tuned!".

This partnership shall benefit AMD way more than Xbox themselves. No matter how many consoles they put out there, it can't survive their strategy for it.

If it's a traditional console thats BC I'm in. Dont care about disc drive as I'm all digital for 10 years anyway. But I kind of do want a 4k drive so I can play my 4k movie discs without having to buy a dedicated player. I sell/trade in my console when I get a new one. And these 4k players are still around $300 CDN. These fuckers wont dump them down to sub-$99 like DVD player bargain binning. At least do an optional external 4k drive like PS5.

This is good for the industry because playstation needs competition, but i have serious doubts about what xbox are doing and that what they're going to do next generation will lead to success.

jm89 jm89 showed up but no one's got his back. Not even a laugh emoji from demigod demigod

They did want to take any hype they may have had with the Rog Ally, I would imagine.
Could be.
Or the Ally was a test - "Is there any interest in a Windows device with a console UI and multiple stores/launchers?"
Maybe this strategy is fresh?
What's your take HeisenbergFX4 HeisenbergFX4 ? Have you heard anything about this before?

Some people really in this thread being annoyed that they're working with AMD as if any of them would want to go back to being spat in the face by Nvidia. Nvidia burned bridges with Microsoft AND Sony, those scars last.

Xbox can't leave bespoke hardware behind. Gamepass doesn't work at scale without consoles.

Console gamers have been conditioned to pay monthly to use Internet with their games. They are already conditioned for gamepass. You can charge them more. They are younger than PC gamers and less likely to cancel month to month. They are a perfect captive audience. They also make up the vast majority of gamepass.

If you make the next real device a PC then you are resetting that programming and scattering your audience. Instead they need a real Xbox console to do the job.

Also Windows isn't actually ready for gaming. Slapping Windows on a bespoke console like XSX or PS5 would cause major performance issues. MS is aware of Window's deficiencies and working to resolve them. Maybe people who don't keep up with this stuff thinks this sounds crazy. You sure about that?

So this is the only move. However, it isn't without risks. The market has soured on Xbox worse than ever over the last 2 years. At the same time the market has become larger and more ubiquitous. The zeitgeist has more coverage. The large casual group is no longer quite as ignorant as they were in the past. News of Xbox's performance this gen may even reach their ears. This would dwindle an already small pool of potential buyers. While I think this is the correct move for Xbox I also believe they should maybe just prepare to go fully 3rd party if this flops. I would certainly not feel comfortable recommending one right now. There is also the persistent ostensible reality that this will somehow have steam on it. How that will work will be anybody's guess.

Not going to lie. That would be wild. HeisenbergFX4 HeisenbergFX4 has been hinting about this for a while, but it has been a closed ecosystem console with access to Steam and other stores. Parris is talking about Windows having access to Xbox games.
HeisenbergFX4 knows something!

But he plays coy like he doesn't. Spill the beans Heisenberg! I'll even buy you a can of beans. Your choice of any can less than $1.50.

A console that can play Steam games looks nice, but Microsoft will subsidise it and distribute worldwide? They have abandoned Series X long time ago, so I ask myself what will be their approach with this new console.

They can have a good ideia, but nothing matter with bad execution. And remember guys: in 2020 people are crazy spreading that Microsoft would dominate consoles sales because of gamepass and Bethesda. Five years late...

Love how they snuck in the details about multiple storefronts and windows OS under the "announcement" that they are working with AMD. As if they weren't working with AMD till now.

But it's at least good to know that they are still planning to make consoles, I guess

My opinion is that these devices will be windows PCs that they will market as consoles.

I've said it before but the whole reason for these devices existing will be to try and get regulators around the world to try and force Nintendo and Sony to open up their ecosystems in a way that ultimately allows Microsoft to sell gamepass directly to consumers on other platforms.

A console that can play Steam games is not a console by definition, it's a branded PC.... :D

I think last minute xbox change there mind for there fans. We need good competition even Sony said thay. But we are still not sure if its a traditional console or a pc console hybrid.

Well then they're gonna have to figure out some way to get your complete library and BC content working on windows.

Cause otherwise it reads and sounds like they're talking about a traditional next console when they mention those things.

My guess is Xbox consoles will work the way they always have. Windows PCs will work the way they always have. Both will feature the same logo.....

So basically, you can get:
  • A PlayStation with 2 first party bangers per generation (seems like it lately)
  • An XBOX PC without those 2 games but add all the PC games, MMOS, etc.

Not sure what to think about this. I dont think they will put an effort into a major console R&D effort now that they are going third party. They abandoned the handheld, and a midgen refresh, and are now saying they are going to create even more next gen console SKUs even though the series S was a fucking disaster. These people dont learn from their mistakes.

On the other hand, im glad we are not going to get a 10 year long geneartion. As powerful as these consoles are, its clear the 60 fps modes are dropping well below 1080p in most games and people simply cant go 5 more years with this tech. At least when it comes to 60 fps.

MS did show up this gen after a rough first couple of years, but their output was extremely mid. Gears and Forza might change it next year but releasing a bunch of mid games all gen is not going to get a lot of people excited in your games, let alone your consoles. I'd rather they focus on making quality games instead.

Just started getting into PC gaming but I kind of miss my Xbox. This seems perfect for me.
Not trying to be a Debbie Downer, this thing definitely seems interesting.

But why? What are you missing on PC?
Have you tried plugging it into the TV? That's how I roll 50% of the time now.

I've more or less retired my Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 Pro. I can play everything I want to play on a PC plugged into the same TV and using the same controllers.

XSX is only used for backwards compatibility now, but nothing played so far in 2025.

PS5 Pro was supposed to be used for 1st party games, but nothing released so far in 2025.

That said, yes this whole strategy seems interesting. I want more info!

At minimum I hope they can bring the multi launcher UI over to PC. Either as a mode in the Xbox App or a new Windows version.
The regular Windows desktop sucks on a TV and Steam big picture mode sucks for non-Steam games.

"Not locked to a single store" suggests otherwise.

It could be more than one kind of device under the umbrella, but "and fully compatible with your existing Xbox game library" suggests it will retain all current functionality as well.

Almost like its last minute change of heart by MS, maybe due to backlash from xbox fans that they still want a next gen console.
