Wii Titles (SMG2, Metroid Prime trilogy and Punch Out!) Announced for Wii U eShop

A quick catch-up for anyone who is joining the thread and has any questions on how this all works.

  1. Games with an announced release date: Super Mario Galaxy 2 (available now), Donkey Kong Country Returns (Jan. 22nd in Europe), Punch-Out!! (Jan. 22nd in the US) and Metroid Prime Trilogy (Jan 29th). All of these titles will cost $20 (or regional equivalent), but they will be on sale for half price ($10 or regional equivalent) during their first week on the eShop.
  2. Games planned for future release, without specific release dates given: Kirby's Adventure Wii (aka Return to Dreamland in the US), Punch-Out!! (in Europe), Pandora's Tower and Sin & Punishment: Star Successor. I assume that DK Country Returns will be available some time in the future in the US as well.
  3. Super Mario Galaxy 2's download size is 1.3 GB.
  4. The Wii U Gamepad can be now used for both off-screen play AND as a control method in games that originally supported the Wii Classic Controller (Pro).
  5. Of the titles announced for Europe and the US, only Pandora's Tower and Sin & Punishment support the CCP.
  6. This means that, at this very moment, we do not know whether this feature will be implemented as a system-wide option or it will be restricted to eShop versions of Wii games. We will have to wait and see for any official confirmation on either possibility.
  7. There is no support for the Wii U Pro Controller or GameCube controller via adapter.
  8. eShop/Virtual Console Wii games are not HD remasters. They are the exact same Wii game that you can buy on disc, with the added advantage of not having to swap discs and being capable of skipping the vWii menu. The game seems to be running in vWii mode, for all intents and purposes (no Miiverse, Wii U menu, etc.).
  9. The Wii U Gamepad has a built-in sensor bar that can be used instead of the external one included with the Wii and Wii U. You still need a Wiimote + Nunchuk to play Super Mario Galaxy 2 (and any other game other than S&P and Pandora's Tower!).

Let's recap:

  • NO. You can't use the Wii U gamepad to control Super Mario Galaxy 2, Punch-Out!!, Donkey Kong Country Returns or Metroid Prime Trilogy.
  • NO. These are not HD remasters. These are 1:1 Wii games that run in Wii Mode. The only difference with a retail version is that you can skip having to go to the Wii Menu first.
  • Each of the first three games (SMG2, DKCR/PO!! and MPT) will be on sale during the first week after release respectively. That means that SMG2 will be 50% between Jan. 15 and Jan. 22, DKRC/PO!! between Jan. 22 and Jan. 29, and MPT between Jan. 29 and Feb. 5.

- They will be available half price for a limited time period
- They show up on the Wii U menu
- Games compatible with the Wii Classic Controller Pro cane be used with Wii U Gamepad
- DKC Returns is available too
- Punch Out instead of DKC returns in NA
- Save files that already exist from your Wii -> Wii U Transfer from these games will be recognised by the Wii game downloads

Never played SMG 2 gonna get it at launch

Also everyone who hasn't gotten it, buy Metroid Prime Trilogy

This is awesome. Finally.

Wonder if rarities like Xenoblade will show up. MP Trilogy right off the bat is great.

Omg. I need to buy an external HD for my Wii U before January 29th. Metroid <3 Can we please get Xenoblade too?

All three games I've yet to play. I know but time and money. I have MP3 but never got my hands on the trilogy. Just didn't have the time or money for SMG2 (I have SMG1) and Punch Out at the time. Getting them all!!!

So are these in HD? Definitely going to pick up Galaxy 2 and Metroid Trilogy will also be hard to resist if both are only £10.

I can only see the video feed without sound - did they mention if they will be upgraded in any way? Resolution etc? Can I use the Pro Controller?
