Wii Titles (SMG2, Metroid Prime trilogy and Punch Out!) Announced for Wii U eShop

But if I want to play the disc-based version of these, I still have to load them through the Wii menu?

Will the GamPad controller work for the disc-based versions?

The most important question here. I assume this would require a system update, however, so if SMG2 is playable today without one, it may be the case that only the eShop versions of the Wii games interface with the Wii U mode via modifications in the software. Somebody test this out.

...this could be a megaton for me.

Hated the Wii-mote controls in Prime 3. I've replayed Prime 1 so much I lost track and replayed Prime 2 at least 4 or 5 times, but couldn't replay Prime 3 a single time. I mean, the fact that it's the weakest of the 3 didn't help, but it still had some cool moments that I wanted to replay. I tried to do so and made it to the first Leviathan seed boss (the one with the big red targets or something) and just quit. Couldn't take the annoying controls annoy more. The waggle roll Wii-mote controls in DKC Returns sucked too.

Might have to rebuy these for Gamepad/Pro Controller playability. Ya got me, Nintendo.

Metroid Prime Trilogy isn't compatible with the Classic Controller Pro. Read the quote more carefully.

Watch the fate of the metroid series depend on trilogy sales lol. Too bad it's download only, so I can only buy it once. Guess I need more Wii u's

Okay so I'm confused, the OP states that Europe gets Punch Out instead of DKCR, but the picture shows dkcr in euros/pounds?

...neither of those games are playable with the classic controller

Are they ports or did Nintendo find a way to package an ISO in a way that boots straight into the Wii mode from the Wii U menu (like the 3DS ambassador GBA games)? Since they are only $20, I suppose it's the latter (since Wind Waker, which is a port, is $40).

At least it would be a nice way to leverage the Wii library on the eShop, even if they are still 480p. People have been asking for Nintendo to do this with DS games on the 3DS eShop for years.
Wind Waker is more of a remaster. Updated assets, minor game play changes to make the experience smoother, completely different lighting engine.

Well screw this crap.

All I wanted was Metroid Prime trilogy and SMG games with 1080p/60fps.

If they can't do the simplest fucking thing like uprezing the resolution to HD then Nintendo just absolutely deserves to not get my business and deserves to get destroyed by Microsoft and Sony.

Looks like I won't be joining the WiiU crowd. I was ready to bust out the credit card and purchase one.

I seriously doubt it. They are probably using a wrapper to play them directly in the Wii U OS without accessing the Wii OS with all its security flaws.

Yeah, kind of disappointed that they aren't rendering in Full-HD when they are already hacking Wii games into the Wii U mode (at least it sounds like that...?). That would really be the icing on the cake. :3

Still. A nice way to make parts of the Wii library available again. Might double dip on SMG2 and the Metroid Prime Trilogy at that price.

I'm pretty sure the Prime Trilogy does not support the Classic Controller.

Punch-Out didn't as well.

So for those with questions, this is what I believe it is;

- Direct ports of Wii games to Wii U in digital eShop format.
- Bootable from the main Wii U menu, avoiding having to activate Wii compatibility mode.
- Standard 480p resolution as per original hardware. Games are not rendered higher.
- Wii U GamePad compatibility for titles that had Wii classic controller support. Wii Remote specific titles will not be GamePad compatible.

In short, they're more or less direct ports. That's it. They are not rendered at a higher resolution. They do not have Wii Remote controls hacked to the GamePad. They are as-is, just in digital format, bootable from the Wii U menu, and in the case where Classic Controller was compatible use of the GamePad in its place.

I would buy DKCR as well if there was a tiny chance of an alternative control scheme without the shake to roll.

Already own all of them but great for those who still haven't played them. Would've double dipped for a resolution bump but oh well.

Wow. Probably getting SMG2 and Trilogy at that cheap price even though I already have them. Incredible. Any word on the multiplayer in Trilogy Echoes? Still there? Four pro controller support?

This seems reasonable, I'm curious if they will do anything with Wii Ware games.

Actually thinking about this, I believe none of the 4 games actually had Classic Controller support.

So I'm puzzled by the announcement.

Thanks!!!

Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Metroid Prime Trilogy for moi!!!!!!

Shame they are merely ports, I didn't play the SMG because of the Wiimote controls so I guess I will still don't play them.

As for MPT goes I'll have to see some videos first.

Mario Galaxy controls incredibly well... at these prices, I would highly recommend at least trying it.

I'm doubting it'll work now.

It's a shame they're actually bringing these to the eShop without any improvements. I realize it wouldn't be trivial to port these games, but damn it, it would have helped so much. I own physical copies of all these games already but might have considered buying again if they were running at a higher resolution.

This is pointless if they're still 480p.

It's definitely not pointless. Especially for those who don't own these games yet. Metroid Prime Trilogy is really expensive on disc for example, but here you can get it for €9.99 during the first week.

Awesome, I'll definitely get the Metroid Prime Trilogy. Not too interested in other Wii games since I have most of them physically anyway. I hope they port over GC games and have them work with Gamepad/Pro Controller. GC games with off-screen play would be awesome.

any reason i would not just want to play my copy of SMG2 on Dolphin instead? I haven't loaded it in dolphin because i haven't felt like tinkering with it and last i remember it had some issues with dolphin.
