There is a lot of pages to this thread so let me make sure I've got this correctly: If you just own a Wii U, say you just bought it, some of these games might not be playable unless you have an old Wii controller? That does not seem like a good idea.
It is if you can see clearly that your buying a Wii game and it warns you about the controllers etc.
I mean these are not the first games that need specific non-packed in controllers.
But I've always said that Nintendo should've packed in a Wii remote and nunchuck with the Wii U.
And/or lower the price on the damn things, it's ridiculous and damaging. Should be $20-30 MSRP, $40 maximum with a nunchuck included.
Forgot how dreadful Wii mode looks on my TV, weirdly worse than my Wii console. Still, played through the game's introductory star and it's all as fabulous as I remember, even if the beautiful visuals are all kinds of muddy.
Oh maaan...this is unreal. Wii U wasn't on my radar at all until literally right now. I'm looking up prices online as we speak. The Metroid Trilogy is essentially a system seller for me.

A quick catch-up for anyone who is joining the thread and has any questions on how this all works.
- Games with an announced release date: Super Mario Galaxy 2 (available now), Donkey Kong Country Returns (Jan. 22nd) and Metroid Prime Trilogy (Jan 29th). All of these titles will cost $20 (or regional equivalent), but they will be on sale for half price ($10 or regional equivalent) during their first week on the eShop.
- Games planned for future release, without specific release dates given: Kirby's Adventure Wii, Punch-Out!!, Pandora's Tower and Sin & Punishment: Star Successor.
- The Wii U Gamepad can be now used for both off-screen play AND as a control method in games that originally supported the Wii Classic Controller (Pro).
- Of the titles announced for Europe and the US, only Pandora's Tower and Sin & Punishment support the CCP.
- This means that, at this very moment, we do not know whether this feature will be implemented as a system-wide option or it will be restricted to eShop versions of Wii games. We will have to wait and see for any official confirmation on either possibility.
- There is no support for the Wii U Pro Controller or GameCube controller via adapter.
- eShop/Virtual Console Wii games are not HD remasters. They are the exact same Wii game that you can buy on disc, with the added advantage of not having to swap discs and being capable of skipping the vWii menu. The game seems to be running in vWii mode, for all intents and purposes (no Miiverse, Wii U menu, etc.).
- The Wii U Gamepad has a built-in sensor bar that can be used instead of the external one included with the Wii and Wii U. You still need a Wiimote + Nunchuk to play Super Mario Galaxy 2 (and any other game other than S&P and Pandora's Tower!).
The OP should be updated to reflect some of the most commonly-asked questions, because at least two or three people per page ask the same things over and over.
Personal note: My theory? Nintendo will release a patch that will implement the Gamepad features in a system-wide level between today and the release of the first CCP-compatible title, as part of their regular system update schedule. It'd make absolutely no sense to have such a feature for just a couple of (relatively minor) titles and not take advantage of it in any other game.
Is this the European title for Return to Dreamland? Because it would be great if they were adding that in America. I never got a hold of a copy.Kirby's Adventure Wii

You may have the 'colour bug' someone was talking about earlier. Though I don't know exactly what it is.

Awesome. Thank you.Yeah it is.
If Nintendo can do this for the Wii than they can do this for DS games on the 3DS e-shop.
Never heard of that before tbh, but considering everyone else seems to say Wii mode looks a lot better for them than the original console, it wouldn't surprise me if something has gone a bit wrong. That said, my original Wii looked a lot better on another HDTV I used to use, so it might just be that my current one doesn't do SD outputs very well.
(If that's possible, I'm not a technical person)
SMG2 picked up my Wii save on the Wii U, BTW. Sorry if this has been posted already.

So, gaf, what shall we do about those MP HD remasters?
a) petition
b) consumer retreat
c) social unrest
d) all of the above
No, it's that your HDTV scales 480p sources better than the Wii U. Your HDTV is getting a 1080p (upscaled from 480p) image from the Wii U when it runs an OG Wii game.
Wii U's scaling of 480p content is extremely sharp... some people might not like it.

Should note that Punch Out is Jan 22nd for NA, and DKC is releasing on the 22nd in EU instead. But otherwise looks like a good recap.
I'm just confused about the Punch-Out/Donkey Kong situation. Just to clarify: as a Europea, I don't know when Punch-Out is coming?
Oh and does Punch-Out really not support the CCP? Weird.

In what way, shape or form is KI a substitute for MP?e) buy an xbox and get killer instinct

wait. so is this HD? if not no buy
This is a little weird considering Metroid Prime Trilogy came out in 2009, and Wii U has been compatible with Wii games since launch in 2012. But hey, I'm just glad one more person is buying a Wii U, regardless of the reason.
Oh my god
Where's Xenoblade
No wii remote or remote plus nunchuck are the optionsDid Punch Out work with the classic controller? if so I might double dip to replay it on the gamepad

Are these going to look any better than my Wii versions already running on my WiiU?
