Wii Titles (SMG2, Metroid Prime trilogy and Punch Out!) Announced for Wii U eShop

In MP Trilogy did that game read save from Metriod Prime 3 save files on the Wii? I owned the original Prime 3 Corruption on Wii so I have a game save. Will trilogy read that save when i'm playing part 3?

There is a lot of pages to this thread so let me make sure I've got this correctly: If you just own a Wii U, say you just bought it, some of these games might not be playable unless you have an old Wii controller? That does not seem like a good idea.

What do you mean by "old"? Wii remotes and nunchucks are still being manufactured and sold at stores. They're an accessory to the WiiU just as much as the new Pro controller is.

That said, yes, you need a Wii Remote for any game that required one on the Wii (ie, you need one for SMG2 and Metroid Prime Trilogy).

It is if you can see clearly that your buying a Wii game and it warns you about the controllers etc.

I mean these are not the first games that need specific non-packed in controllers.

But I've always said that Nintendo should've packed in a Wii remote and nunchuck with the Wii U.

And/or lower the price on the damn things, it's ridiculous and damaging. Should be $20-30 MSRP, $40 maximum with a nunchuck included.

Fair enough. Would have just wished they could figure out a way for software to be playable with simply what comes in the standard box, but I guess if some of these games are very reliant on Wii Mote controls that might be asking for a lot short of a complete remaster.

I am going to skip punchout next week but buy prime trilogy next week. I am wondering if nintendo will upload these easily. Since this is not full emulation like VC titles, I imagine all nintendo has to do is dump the file onto the eshop and thats that. Think there will be a wii game a week from here on out? I would actually enjoy playing through twilight princess again.

Forgot how dreadful Wii mode looks on my TV, weirdly worse than my Wii console. Still, played through the game's introductory star and it's all as fabulous as I remember, even if the beautiful visuals are all kinds of muddy.

You may have the 'colour bug' someone was talking about earlier. Though I don't know exactly what it is.

So, gaf, what shall we do about those MP HD remasters?

a) petition
b) consumer retreat
c) social unrest
d) all of the above

Oh maaan...this is unreal. Wii U wasn't on my radar at all until literally right now. I'm looking up prices online as we speak. The Metroid Trilogy is essentially a system seller for me.

Believe me, you won't regret it. I actually bought my old Wii with Metroid Prime Trilogy, and I'm still playing it to this day. That game alone made the Wii worth buying for me.

Damn really want to grab all 3 at the discounted price but I'm pretty much at platinum for Club Nintendo this year. I'm assuming these also give coins right?

Now that I think about it I wonder if this opens an avenue for games that failed to come out in the US? Though after the Operation Rainfall trilogy got brought over this is probably mainly relevant for Disaster: Day of Crisis and Another Code: R (Captain Rainbow seems the kind of thing NIntendo would be too scared to touch, nevermind needing to localize... though I guess at $20 it'd justify itself.)

Try playing it on the Gamepad as a screen, sure it's a lot smaller a screen but the game acutally looks better on it due the gamepad being closer to the game's native resolution.

A quick catch-up for anyone who is joining the thread and has any questions on how this all works.

  1. Games with an announced release date: Super Mario Galaxy 2 (available now), Donkey Kong Country Returns (Jan. 22nd) and Metroid Prime Trilogy (Jan 29th). All of these titles will cost $20 (or regional equivalent), but they will be on sale for half price ($10 or regional equivalent) during their first week on the eShop.
  2. Games planned for future release, without specific release dates given: Kirby's Adventure Wii, Punch-Out!!, Pandora's Tower and Sin & Punishment: Star Successor.
  3. The Wii U Gamepad can be now used for both off-screen play AND as a control method in games that originally supported the Wii Classic Controller (Pro).
  4. Of the titles announced for Europe and the US, only Pandora's Tower and Sin & Punishment support the CCP.
  5. This means that, at this very moment, we do not know whether this feature will be implemented as a system-wide option or it will be restricted to eShop versions of Wii games. We will have to wait and see for any official confirmation on either possibility.
  6. There is no support for the Wii U Pro Controller or GameCube controller via adapter.
  7. eShop/Virtual Console Wii games are not HD remasters. They are the exact same Wii game that you can buy on disc, with the added advantage of not having to swap discs and being capable of skipping the vWii menu. The game seems to be running in vWii mode, for all intents and purposes (no Miiverse, Wii U menu, etc.).
  8. The Wii U Gamepad has a built-in sensor bar that can be used instead of the external one included with the Wii and Wii U. You still need a Wiimote + Nunchuk to play Super Mario Galaxy 2 (and any other game other than S&P and Pandora's Tower!).

The OP should be updated to reflect some of the most commonly-asked questions, because at least two or three people per page ask the same things over and over.

Personal note: My theory? Nintendo will release a patch that will implement the Gamepad features in a system-wide level between today and the release of the first CCP-compatible title, as part of their regular system update schedule. It'd make absolutely no sense to have such a feature for just a couple of (relatively minor) titles and not take advantage of it in any other game.

I'm just confused about the Punch-Out/Donkey Kong situation. Just to clarify: as a Europea, I don't know when Punch-Out is coming?

Oh and does Punch-Out really not support the CCP? Weird.

Never heard of that before tbh, but considering everyone else seems to say Wii mode looks a lot better for them than the original console, it wouldn't surprise me if something has gone a bit wrong. That said, my original Wii looked a lot better on another HDTV I used to use, so it might just be that my current one doesn't do SD outputs very well.

(If that's possible, I'm not a technical person)

No, it's that your HDTV scales 480p sources better than the Wii U. Your HDTV is getting a 1080p (upscaled from 480p) image from the Wii U when it runs an OG Wii game.

Wii U's scaling of 480p content is extremely sharp... some people might not like it.

Are you using a PAL console with non-HDMI output? Those consoles only output 576i50hz via component for some reason.

Yeah I tried out Xenoblade for fun and wow. Not fun to look at.

Should note that Punch Out is Jan 22nd for NA, and DKC is releasing on the 22nd in EU instead. But otherwise looks like a good recap.

Thanks! I updated my original post with this info. I'm from Europe and I didn't realize that there were discrepancies between the EU and US releases.

I'm just confused about the Punch-Out/Donkey Kong situation. Just to clarify: as a Europea, I don't know when Punch-Out is coming?

Oh and does Punch-Out really not support the CCP? Weird.

For the time being, nope. We know that it's coming alongside the other three games, but we don't know when exactly. I have to assume that DKCR will also be available in the US at a later date too.

Is this the European title for Return to Dreamland? Because it would be great if they were adding that in America. I never got a hold of a copy.

Yep, though somebody already answered you :P

This is a little weird considering Metroid Prime Trilogy came out in 2009, and Wii U has been compatible with Wii games since launch in 2012. But hey, I'm just glad one more person is buying a Wii U, regardless of the reason.

Well it isn't like MP Trilogy was easy to find past its launch.

I hope they release Xenoblade, but with new 3DS version coming... I doubt it.
3DS version looks awful to me, and I have no intentions of buying a new 3DS.

As someone that missed out on the entirety of the Wii generation, this news made my day. Can't wait to finally complete the MPT (only got through part of the first one on Gamecube - loved it but it fell victim to my backlog).

Also, would it be sacrilegious to play Mario Galaxy 2 before I play 1? I will get both eventually, but I feel like I should jump on 2 at that price point.

this Wii vc is great, despite me not beig interested. this and the mario vs dk crossbuy are a good glimpse about their future, imho
