Wii Titles (SMG2, Metroid Prime trilogy and Punch Out!) Announced for Wii U eShop

SMG2 picked up my Wii save on the Wii U, BTW. Sorry if this has been posted already.

Really?! Sick! I might get MPT when it comes out then... I'm in the middle of Echoes and I don't want to start over again, but I have the feeling that having the trilogy digitally will be a good idea...

In what way, shape or form is KI a substitute for MP?

....s'in HD.
I think this also confirms there will be no Super Mario Galaxy HD Collection :(

Oh man. Just imagine how good that would be.

this Wii vc is great, despite me not beig interested. this and the mario vs dk crossbuy are a good glimpse about their future, imho

Is the cross buy thing true? Much like Sony do with PS3/4 to Vita?

Metroid prime trilogy on gamestops's website preowned 49.99.

Super MArio galaxy 2 29.99 preowned.

They are expensive, but they were in print for quit some time, and would make a much bigger impact consumer wise if they were HD remakes. For fair price.

Dude, what are you even doing in this thread? At this point, it’s just thread whining. People aren’t mad at these Nintendo rereleases because they don’t do the things people fault remasters for. You are essentially proving my point by showing that Nintendo is selling their games anywhere form 1/3 to 1/5 of the current market value. No one is heralding this as the second coming because they are just wii games at wii resolution. Many people are saying that they won’t buy it unless they come out with an HD version.

The people that are excited are happy with the price and the game selection. That’s it. No one is making an argument that this is some game changer and that Nintendo will win back the market. People are just happy they don’t have to spend, minimum, $50 for a game that came out five years ago. The gamestop website doesn’t even have the game in stock!

So, what are you even saying at this point? That people could have bought the games when they were in print? Yeah, but it’s 2014 and these games are now expensive and hard to find. Is it that you wish these were in HD? Yeah, we’d all love HD remakes for cheap, but that’s not in the cards. Is it that you think people are too excited for something you seem to not care about? Well, that sounds like a problem with you and not with Nintendo fans.

This is great for those who want to play these games, but don't pay ridiculous eBay prices.

I can't see Xenoblade coming for a bit as NOA doesn't want canabalize sales of the 3DS version.

Hopefully Return to Dreamland comes soon to North America. That game is pricey as well.

Can you use the gamepad as a sensor bar? I've been wanting to play Galaxy 2 for a couple of weeks but lost both my sensors :/

Why Galaxy 2 and not Galaxy 1? Haven't played Galaxy in a long time. :/

Galaxy 1 is available at the cheaper Nintendo Selects price. This was done most likely because Galaxy 2 and MPT prices are outrageous. That said, Galaxy 1 is probably planned for the future.

yay more re-released and remakes

No remakes, tho. Just an addition to the Virtual Console/E-Shop service, while allowing the Gamepad to act as a Pro if the game allows it.

Which is great if you skipped the Wii or if you can't find the original titles for cheap, like me.

Yup, the pad has a built-in sensor bar. E: v With that caveat, though.

It's actually better because you get a code rather than loading the game directly. So if you don't want the version/don't have the hardware you can always sell it/give it away.

until its abused in this way by selling it and they stop the program

As someone that missed out on the entirety of the Wii generation, this news made my day. Can't wait to finally complete the MPT (only got through part of the first one on Gamecube - loved it but it fell victim to my backlog).

Also, would it be sacrilegious to play Mario Galaxy 2 before I play 1? I will get both eventually, but I feel like I should jump on 2 at that price point.
You should play both, but 2 is superior to 1 in just about every way.

wow. never played galaxy 2 or punchout... might need a wiimote/nunchuck i guess which ups the price somewhat

It sucks hardly any of these games had Classic controller support. I remember not caring when the games originally came out but now I wish they took the time to support that feature no one used.

Even if I risk sounding too boring, I'll repost here for people who still have questions about this.

A quick catch-up for anyone who is joining the thread and has any questions on how this all works.

  1. Games with an announced release date: Super Mario Galaxy 2 (available now), Donkey Kong Country Returns (Jan. 22nd in Europe), Punch-Out!! (Jan. 22nd in the US) and Metroid Prime Trilogy (Jan 29th). All of these titles will cost $20 (or regional equivalent), but they will be on sale for half price ($10 or regional equivalent) during their first week on the eShop.
  2. Games planned for future release, without specific release dates given: Kirby's Adventure Wii (aka Return to Dreamland in the US), Punch-Out!! (in Europe), Pandora's Tower and Sin & Punishment: Star Successor. I assume that DK Country Returns will be available some time in the future in the US as well.
  3. The Wii U Gamepad can be now used for both off-screen play AND as a control method in games that originally supported the Wii Classic Controller (Pro).
  4. Of the titles announced for Europe and the US, only Pandora's Tower and Sin & Punishment support the CCP.
  5. This means that, at this very moment, we do not know whether this feature will be implemented as a system-wide option or it will be restricted to eShop versions of Wii games. We will have to wait and see for any official confirmation on either possibility.
  6. There is no support for the Wii U Pro Controller or GameCube controller via adapter.
  7. eShop/Virtual Console Wii games are not HD remasters. They are the exact same Wii game that you can buy on disc, with the added advantage of not having to swap discs and being capable of skipping the vWii menu. The game seems to be running in vWii mode, for all intents and purposes (no Miiverse, Wii U menu, etc.).
  8. The Wii U Gamepad has a built-in sensor bar that can be used instead of the external one included with the Wii and Wii U. You still need a Wiimote + Nunchuk to play Super Mario Galaxy 2 (and any other game other than S&P and Pandora's Tower!).

The OP should be updated to reflect some of the most commonly-asked questions, because at least two or three people per page ask the same things over and over.

Personal note: My theory? Nintendo will release a patch that will implement the Gamepad features in a system-wide level between today and the release of the first CCP-compatible title, as part of their regular system update schedule. It'd make absolutely no sense to have such a feature for just a couple of (relatively minor) titles and not take advantage of it in any other game.

In addition to releasing fantastic 1st party games, Nintendo makes some of the best experiences from last generation available for a ridiculously low price point on their current system. People still complain about it for some reason.
Nintendo makes new games, gamers ask where the old games are

Nintendo re-releases old games, gamers ask why they're not making new games

Irrelevant: that they're doing both at the same time.

Why? I mean it's technically possible, but Xenoblade Chronicles 3D comes out in 3 months.

They released Donkey Kong Country Returns even though we have a 3DS version. If they want to get people hyped for the new Xenoblade game, offering people the original is a great way to do it. It’s also directing money from scalpers to Nintendo.

Oh geez, completely overlooked the DKCR thing. Well it'll be quite a while if ever though, considering how recent Xenoblade on new 3DS is.

They could sell a bundle with Xenoblade ans Xenoblade X.

Killer Instinct as a sub for Metroid Prime because it's in HD has got to be one of the stupidest things I've ever heard.
I'm really curious about his line of thinking. I'm sure there must a logical line of reasoning in there.. somewhere.

Well, KI was a Nintendo game and the new KI is an HD version of a game that was previously on Nintendo systems... would be my guess. It's quite a non sequitur (am I using that word correctly?).

I'm so glad that MPT is going to be available for more people!!
I'm happy about this. I could have gone for one of the used ones, or expensive ones off eBay, but I had just settled into complacency and assumed I'd never play anything but Metroid Prime 3 (which I own).

I just added the 29th to my calendar to make sure I get the trilogy this time around. :)

Black borders and the thought of digging out an old Wii mote to play SMG 2 has just killed my hype, will be the same for Metroid too. Oh well :(

There are no black borders if you play in 480p (just pop your Wii U into 480p mode from the menu before launching the Wii game). If you play Wii games on a Wii U in 1080p mode it uses a 1:2 pixel doubler to make the games 960p with zero scaling artifacts. It's actually nice having the choice.

Yep and the hilarious part is how the GC version is like $100 to purchase online. Would be amazing to have it released on eShop for a reasonable price

Softmod the vWii inside your Wii U and install Nintendon't and you can play Twilight Princess on a Wii U with a classic controller.

The prospects of GCN VC excite me.

It would mean entire franchises could be available for digital download on one system. In theory, with GCN VC, every F-Zero game could be downloaded (if they added the other GBA games as well). With DS VC thrown in, franchises like Star Fox and Metroid are open to having 100% of their libraries playable on the Wii U. Every Smash Bros. Every Pikmin. Every Mario Kart except 7.

It's actually really cool to think about.
