Wii Titles (SMG2, Metroid Prime trilogy and Punch Out!) Announced for Wii U eShop

Quick question, if anyone can answer: how horrible will Galaxy 2 look on a 50" TV? The screenshots on the eShop look pretty horrible when Mario is closer to the screen.

Anyone with a Best Best Gamers Buyer's Club, do you get a discount for eShop cards? If so, I'm just gonna go there for a discount and then redeem.

Also, any recommended storage device for the WiiU?

1.3 gigs ^^^

That is a good point about the hard drive space though. I'm scared with the horror stories of external drives of various sorts failing (not sure if some people have them fail even with best practices), so I'm hoping my non-basic Wii U has enough room for the trilogy.

I've never had problems and every eshop game I have 20+ is running off my harddrive with no issues.

Gotta go through the thread.

But is there any talks about the games running in higher quality?

right now running HDMI on wiiU and booting the wii menu will crap the quality to SD instead of Progressive Scan that you get with a composite cable on the wii.

shame.. cuz a lot of wii games i want to play on the wiiU look hideous and are a turn off.

running in the same quality as if you had the disc.

Sorry if already asked, but do these have Miiverse commnunities?
from what I can tell so far looking through miiverse..no

In MP Trilogy did that game read save from Metriod Prime 3 save files on the Wii? I owned the original Prime 3 Corruption on Wii so I have a game save. Will trilogy read that save when i'm playing part 3?

Not sure if people answered this but no, it won't read your Metroid Prime 3 save files.

Metroid Prime Trilogy uses a single save file for all three games (like if it were a single game with different chapters) so both are totally different save files.

If you purchase Trilogy from the eShop and you already have a save file from the disk/retail version with 50% completed of Prime 3 you will be able to play from there.
If you want to play Prime 3 from the Trilogy but you only have a stand-alone Prime 3 game file then you will have to start all over again. Fresh start.

I dunno but I played Metroid Prime 1 from the Trilogy about 3 years ago on a 50" TV using component cables and thought it still looked pretty amazing. That TV was only 720p/1080i though which might have made a difference. Also I wasn't as aware of resolution differences as I am now. Either way the art direction is so good that it will hold up wonderfully similar to WoW still does after all these years IMO

running in the same quality as if you had the disc.

ugh.... SD on a big tv looks really bad.

Are there any options to make the disc games look better on wiiU? would a composite cable do? I am not even sure you can run a composite cable on the wiiU.

Could you imagine them dumping the entire rest of the Wii Virtual Console library to the eShop with the flick of a switch? No reason now why they couldn't now, unless the contracts with Sega, Konami etc were originally that spelled out as "Wii only forever." The games wouldn't have miiverse, but every single one of them support the classic controller and therefore off-tv play.

Instead I get the feeling that we'll be drip fed Wii titles or VC titles, one or the other per week. I understand that releasing a whole catalog at once would result in a lot of missed game sales, but maybe a N64 Month promo and an expanded featured games section.

I don't understand where has it ever been implied any future Wii VC releases won't support the original controls?

And what new controls? Metroid Prime 3 wouldn't even be playable with a controller, the entire game is made with the Wii Remote in mind... What exactly is Nintendo supposed to do short of remaking the entire game to work with a controller?

I was going off other's people's post about using certain controls.

Its a Virtual Console dude! Why would they change the games?

They don't require you to plug a SNES controller into your Wii U to play Virtual Console games, emulating the controls onto the gamepad isn't an insane expectation.

So SMBG2 works without the Nunchuk, right?

I believe the nunchuk is required for the game, only the second player can go without it to shoot stars.

it is for games that require the wii mote. for most games the experience would not be the same at all.

you haven't gotten an HDD yet? you can delete and redownload games if that works better. your saves will be retained.

playing wii games for IQ ha! lol SMG2 is a gem though gameplay wise.

Oh. definitely! i am very excited to see SMG2 on the wiiU with the control support.

I just wish they would fix the lack of progressive scan even when you are using an HDMI cable.

Its no longer working on an emulator side but as a wiiU digital title. So maybe it'll be different?

I'm sure this has been answered a million times over, but is this able to be controlled by the GamePad? Or do you need the wiimote or classic controller?

Don't be willfully dense, you know mapping an SNES's buttons to something like the pro controller is simple.

Completely retooling a game to work with a standard pad, that had heavy reliance on motion controls is not.

Not Punch Out, DKR, or Mario had motion controls that could not easily be replaced by the analog stick or a button.

edit: I'm assuming on DKR. I've heard the only motion control in the game was spaz out to roll, I stopped playing the game in the first level because of it.

Hmmm...with my experience with older games they don't tend to look too hot on my 1080p 50". I tried playing FFXII on it once and that was horrendous.

But you know what? To hell with how it looks. Galaxy was amazing and I want me some more of that. Rune Factory can wait!

...they do this, all the time. PSOne/2 Classics.

Not even remotley what were talking about. Those are games that are ages old by now. Especially PS1 games. Even on emulators it's hard to improve what 3d models looked like back then.

PS2 games I guess could have gotten the treatment, but only a select few did, and even that treatment wasn't as good as Wind waker HD was.

We're talking about Wii games that came out 2009,2010, not too long ago. And especially when you look at how Pikmin 3 was originally a Wii game, not far fetched to see Wii U and Wii hardware are similar, so HD remaster's wouldn't take as long as Wind waker did since that was running off of Gamecube hardware originally.

I know it's recommended to use an external hard drive but can I get away with using a high performance USB flash drive instead? A 64GB would work just fine for me.

those are not usually recommended but they work. I think gaffers have used them without problems in the past. ^^

I think its technically still using wii kernal which is why saves carry over if you have the physical version. also I'm sorry to say but SMG2 doesn't use the wii u game pad controls. only wii digital games that support that are games that are able to utilize the classic controller.

If you play Galaxy 2 on the original Wii mode on Wii U, it looks pretty damn good!

I think people assume 480p SD looks worse than it does on HDTV because they have crap scalers in their TV. The Wii U does its own scaling and looks pretty nice!

It's not HD, so if you are looking for fine detailed perfection this isn't it, but the general all around ugliness playing SD on HDTV? That's your crap scaler.

I'm really conflicted. I've wanted MPT for the longest, but I just DO NOT want to go back to the wii mote. I'll probably buy it, and I don't really care about the lack of updated resolution or whatever, but having to go back to the waggle kills me.

This has me really hoping for these games getting sequels.

1. The developers of all three titles finished their most recent games more than a year ago, and are not working on any announced video games.

2. All three developers have only worked on so many series (EAD Tokyo's only non-Mario work are Flipnote Studios and Donkey Kong).

3. Next Level Games expressed an interest in a Punch-Out!! 2, Miyamoto has discussed the prospects of a Galaxy 3 (IIRC), and Nintendo mentioned the possibilities of a new Metroid game.

Did they "remake the entire games" when they ported over Prime 1&2 to the Trilogy? You make it sound like exhausting, out-of-the question type of work to make a new control scheme for an existing game. Nintendo last gen made a whole $19.99 budget line of "New Play Control" games, which were Gamecube titles made to run on Wii with the remote. And that was the price for them being on disc!

Expecting these games on the eShop to support the gamepad controller that they're always trying to defend (and the only thing packaged with most consoles) is not unreasonable.

Yeah, the Galaxy games and Metroid look solid still even all these years later. Some things suffer more from the low resolution, like Skyward Sword, but its really not that bad.

This makes sense. I was reading the recap post. Its pretty interesting tho. All the changes they are bringing.

I tried to play Okami and TLoZ Skyward Sword and it looked awful. But i should look into it again.

It looks alright on my 42'' TV. Obviously has some minor issues, but nothing that makes it look unplayable.

The thing with the analog stick you move Mario with, you assume is optional for some reason. It's required dude.

I was just asking because of this:

No mention of a nunchuk.

Is this actual gamepad controls for Wii games or we have to use that crap Wiimote still too? The SMG video in the OP is someone staring at the tiny gamepad using a Wiimote lol

"Spaz out to roll," huh? The minor jerking motion that has to be made isn't much more demanding than the typing on your keyboard you're doing now. You could have also played it on the Classic Controller instead of not playing it.

It's more demanding and less accurate than a button press, and rather than putting up with it I decided not to play the game because it's terrible design (Mario Galaxy is the only game I managed to finish that used this control method, every other game including Galaxy 2 it wasn't worth putting up with). I rented the game to try it out, it was terrible, and I returned it. I didn't buy a classic controller because I had no interest in paying Nintendo more money for failing to include a competent control option with their system, I just stopped spending money on the Wii instead.

edit: I just looked it up and DKR didn't even support the classic controller, so that doesn't seem to be an option even if I wanted to reward Nintendo for packing in the worst controller in console history.

No mention of a nunchuk.

The wii remote is what's needed to navigate Wii mode in general (the pic you're showing). Once Galaxy boots up, it tells you nunchuck required. You may not have played it and are used to the concept of NSMB and 3D World letting you use the d-pad, eh? It's different in Galaxy, you have to point at the screen and trust me, no nunchuck would make that a total mess.

No mention of a nunchuk.

That's for the Wii Menu, not the game. Mario Galaxy 2 requires the Nunchuck. IIRC, the game won't get pass the intro screen without a Nunchuck. If you disconnect it during gameplay, you can still jump and spin, but not move.

Is this actual gamepad controls for Wii games or we have to use that crap Wiimote still too? The SMG video in the OP is someone staring at the tiny gamepad using a Wiimote lol

The only games that will support the gamepad as their input method are Sin & Punishment and Pandora's Tower. The remaining games require, at least, a Wiimote. SMG2 requires both the Wiimote and the Nunchuck, and there's no other control option available for them. Read here for more info.
