Wii Titles (SMG2, Metroid Prime trilogy and Punch Out!) Announced for Wii U eShop

Wii games (at least the good ones) are actually kind of expensive for used games from last gen, so I'm glad to see them for cheap on VC. I almost bought SMG2 and MPT the other day, for like $30 and $55 respectively.

Release Xenoblade and Fire Emblem, and I'll be a happy man!

Not that I have a Wii U yet, but should I play SMG before SMG2?

The main difference between the two from a broad perspective is that Galaxy 1 is kind of slower paced than 2 due to the hub world system vs 2's straight up level select system. Other than that, 2 is basically a full length and full quality level pack to 1, so just start with whichever is more convenient for you. The stories have little if nothing to do with each other.

I haven't been keeping up with this thread, but is anyone talking about why SMG2 is being released on the eShop, but not SMG1? Perhaps there's an HD remaster planned for it instead... or a N3DS port?

Nope, no need. SMG2 is the better Galaxy in my opinion and most others as well. You wouldn't even tell it's a sequel honestly.

Ah, I see, cheers.

I think Super Mario Galaxy is still in print as a Nintendo Select. Not so sure about Galaxy 2, I don't see it around as often or for as cheap. I think part of the reasoning behind this idea is to give Wii U owners a chance to get out of print first party titles that are hard to find.

Good point. I saw new copies of the first SMG at Best Buy just yesterday.

So does GamePad/Classic Controller controls work on disc Wii Mode? Or is that an assumed feature?

We don't know for sure, since no game that uses the CCP has been released so far. There's enough "evidence" to assume it can go either way: support for only eShop releases (the most practical case scenario for Nintendo) and system-wide implementation (the most logical implementation of the feature). We'll need to wait until a game that uses the CCP is released to check with a physical copy, or until the next system update hits to see if it's being incorporated as the off-screen feature for the vWii was in the past.

So how does this work. Does it boot into Wii mode but with added Wii U Pad support? Does it run in Wii U mode? Do the games get miiverse boards?

I've never played the new Punch Out! and I've heard quite a bit of praise for it, how does it play? I'm assuming it's not a waggle game (I know it requires a Wiimote).
During gameplay you turn the Wiimote sideways and use it like a NES controller. No waggle.
Cheers, I'll buy the game for sure!

Either way I need to ask my Wiimote back from a friend.

Don't expect to use that Gamepad in lots of titles! Nintendo published titles which supported the classic controller are, according to Wikipedia...

Endless Ocean 2: Adventures of the Deep
Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
Kirby's Dream Collection: Special Edition
Mario Kart Wii
Samurai Warriors 3: Xtreme Legends
Sin and Punishment: Star Successor
Super Mario All-Stars 25th Anniversary Edition
Super Robot Taisen NEO
Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Xenoblade Chronicles
Zangeki no Reginleiv
The Last Story
Pandora's Tower

A lot of those probably won't release either :/

If Smash Brawl allowed Smash Stack I'd laugh though.

I don't have a Wii controller or nunchuck - so it sucks I have to buy those. Additionally, my Wii U is not near my TV (av grear in a closet) so it sucks I have to find a ugly ass wireless sensor bar. Essentially, I'm out $100 without buying a game.

ALL that said, I REALLY want to play Galaxy2 and Metroid. Games I missed by not owning a Wii.

$60 if you pay fucking retail prices for a Wii Remote Plus and nunchuck.
You don't need a sensor bar, the Gamepad has one built in it (look at the top of the screen). If you want a wireless sensor bar anyway, it's more like $8.
Don't greatly exaggerate shit.

Don't count on it, it would basically render Wii U's VC upgrade program almost useless and destroy their strategy on how they're tackling the release schedule by giving instant access to hundreds of VC games.

Hopefully they'll get Xenoblade out this way. I already have these games on disc, but I'd love to play Xenoblade on the Gamepad (and without paying $100+ for it).

Galaxy 2 does not look good on my display. I hope the games that use the gamepad for control can be played with the Gamepad and display to it.

They might just be releasing Galaxy 2 first because it will give people an incentive to buy Galaxy 1 at full price when it drops. "Well I already have 2, it's weird to not have the original. I'll buy that now for $20"

Or innocently, they may just consider 2 to me the superior game overall and therefore a "hotter" one to launch the line with. I don't expect Galaxy 1 HD and I'm fairly confident it will drop as a standard Wii downloadable within the year.

How is that even a worry? Every Wii game has the ability to output the video to the gamepad in a mirrored form already. It's not going to suddenly exclude that feature when a Classic Controller game is available.

Are you letting the Wii U do the upscaling, or did you change the output to 480p and let the TV do the work?

I am seriously tempted to buy Metroid Prime Trilogy (who am i kidding, i'm going to buy it anyway). Still i'm sort off pissed it's just 480p. Last gen we had a bunch off PS2/Xbox games upped to 720p at least and that helped a lot in the IQ department.

Still, MPT is a must. Show Nintendo they need to make more Samus games!

It's a pain in the ass to play with your wiimote's when you're in bed and using the gamepad screen.

So the chances DKCR gets classic non waggle controls is none to zero? :(

I don't remember if the nunchuck combo required waggle or not. But another example of a game that is played NES style, and the gamepad has the "waggle sensor" (the U Pro Controller doesn't). Suddenly it's a bummer that a lot of Wii games just never bothered programming in CC functionality due to it seeming excessive and unneccessary.

Hopefully some games get patched. Retro or Monster (3DS port) are active and very familiar with the DKCR game code so it wouldn't be at all tasky to implement such a minor but essential addition.

I agree and never bothered even using the feature. As a controller with a screen, I use off-tv all the time. I never bothered using it as a standalone display because it's just so fucking silly, there's buttons right on the damn thing. The poster is worried that somehow they're going to turn off the display when a game uses the pad as a Classic Controller. Which I think (I hope) is just paranoid.

I am tempted by SMG2 too but I already have the Wii version and don't really like the resolution output so never played it.
If the game has the same resolution of a Wii disc than I pass.

theres a gecko code (cheat) to use a classic controller on DKCR on a homebrewed Wii, all they would need to do (on the iso version) is impliment that memory address change and call it good, it would take no time at all to impliment.

I take it you're young and aren't used to playing games from the PS2-era or earlier? You're missing out. Galaxy 2 was universally praised as one of the must have games of the generation, despite being an SD game in an HD era.

Well there you go. If it's simple enough for an individual to program it in for free (don't get me wrong, I'm sure they're a passionate community) then surely someone who's paid for the company and worked on the scheme could do it in minutes.

If somehow this will be a possibility, then i hope they will also somehow allow this for all classic controller wii games use it. And hackers to use it for Nintendont (bla bla analog triggers - yes i know. Luckily they aren't all that mandator in some games)

Ehm not really, I had a Wii for a long time, played the first Galaxy but never finished and got the 2nd but never played. I am not a graphics freak but having played Wii U titles from the launch day I cannot turn back to that horrid SD.
And meanwhile I found my answer, it's the same shitty low-res version that I already own :(

In an era where HD games are being remastered to be "more HD" for $60 a pop (Last of Us, GTA V) did you really expect the same out of a $10 Galaxy? Or even when they go to normal price at $20?

Yes, because last generation we got a lot of PS2 era games in packs of 2-3 in at least 720p (with or without upgraded graphics) for sometimes not even $60 a pack. That means that either you had 3 games for full price or 2 games for about $40 (correct me if i'm wrong). Do the math. We're talking about just upscaling to HD, no special, super, turbo, PC high settings games.

I also think it's possible and cheap to do. That "New Play Control" line that added Wii Remote controls to Gamecube games launched at $20. An "HD Line" that properly uses the Gamepad for that price, even if digital only, would be excellent.

But times have changed. Look at my examples before: Last of Us and GTA V. People will buy 'em at full price and companies have noticed.

Yeah i posted about just when they announced that Tomb Raider definitive edition. I felt that it was the beginning of selling the same game, with minor upgrades for full price.

Does not look good as in its not HD, or something else? I played it for hours last night on my 46" Samsung and at no point did I think this does not look good, I was too busy being overjoyed after forgetting how good SMG2 is to play

Last of Us and GTA V (as well as Wind Waker HD) did have more improvements than higher resolution though. I would have considered SMG2 at 30€ (15€ sale) in HD even when I already have the Wii disc here (same for MPT), but I just don't see enough benefit to double-dip for a SD re-release.

I play Galaxy 2 since months on my wiiU plus 46" LED TV and imo it looks fantastic (jaggies aside).
I even made a post with screenshots some weeks ago.
It upscales nicely

I never thought about the money involved, I would buy it for more than 20 Euros for sure. I just want it HD :)

Yeah if you have the disc, there's no logical reason to. This is just Wii games available in the Wii U eShop, not new versions. I'd sold off most of my Wii stuff and still probably won't buy most unless they patch in proper gamepad support. But I'll get the ones I loved and/or the ones for $10. Or maybe those that I missed out on for whatever reason.

I wish Nintendo was doing more with these, but I still appreciate them being available. I don't even demand "rereleases," just a simple post-support patch like all games get nowadays. I wouldn't expect people with physical copies to double dip and Nintendo probably doesn't either.

I think I may buy Trilogy again, because it is that good, and I want to support Metroid games that aren't Other M. They are taking their sweet time bringing GBA games to the virtual console, because I want to have Fusion and Zero Mission.

Playing through SMG2 again and i am genuinely surprised at how well it holds up visually. It's no current gen game obviously but it sure as heck isn't a blurry mess either. I'm actually inclined to agree with some that say the SMG series visually speaking were more ambitious than SM3DW.

do it
I have played through prime 3 on the WiiU again and it looks surpsingly well upscaled.
