Wii Titles (SMG2, Metroid Prime trilogy and Punch Out!) Announced for Wii U eShop

That ship sailed when they elected to not include upscaling in the Wii U's Wii BC.

This is just piggybacking off the hardware that's already there.

There is upscaling on Wii titles, which is the only reason it can output in 720p or 1080p. Just not upresing, which would require additional testing on a game-by-game basis in order to make sure everything performs well at the higher rendering resolution. And many titles also probably used low-res textures, so they would look out of place with higher resolution geometry. Upresed backwards compatibility just isn't feasible.

Would be nice if they updated the Wii Disc icon on the Wii U menu to boot directly to the game, or at least open the disc channel and press Start automatically when it boots into Wii mode. At the moment having both that icon and the Wii Menu icon is kind of pointless since they basically do the same thing (Wii Menu of course being able to go to Wii mode without a Wii disc).

So now we have NES, SNES, GBA, DS, and Wii titles on the Wii U. Only 3 more to go!

And I hope they stick with it this time. Release all Nintendo published Wii games this way, if possible, include easy to implement changes (classic controller in DKCR) and don't skip titles like they do on the SNES VC (Yoshi's Island :( ).
And hopefully we will see some 3rd Party games as well, since there should be little to no modifications neccessary. Do these titles have to go through the same age verification nonesense like other digital releases? (USK and the likes?)

I'd really love to play the Metroid Prime trilogy. I'll have to pick up a wiimote and nunchuck thing now. You win, Nintendo.

If they release brawl, will it have online?
if it has online itll be great!

(Even tho I like smash 4 better, but I loved brawl also)

I've played most of the best Wii games, but I'm so happy I skipped Metroid I and II on GC and III on Wii! I only played Other M.
I'm gonna have a blast playing all 3 on the 29th! :)
On top of that, I discovered now that Prime Trilogy has Dolby Pro Logic II surround sound support, and I recently got a DPII sound system!

It's gonna be the most well spent 9€ ever.

I'm honestly jealous that you never got to experience these games yet.

Aw, wish we got Punch Out at half price in the UK instead of DKC:R. In for the other 2 though.
Why? You can easily find disc copies of the game for cheaper than £9:

A few months ago you could get the game for like £4.

I doubt it, they don't have the code, servers or rights to resurrect it. The bigger question is will it still be susceptible to smash stack and also how are they handling read speed of Wii VC games. Will it be like USB loader on the Wii where the game loads a lot faster than the disc version or not?

I know I need a wii remote to play these, but do you need a nunchuck as well?

If I do get a nunchuck as well, will it be compatabile with the Wii U (work for movement)?

If you dont need a nunchuck, how do you move the character?

New Wii U owner here, don't know much!

Thanks

You need a nunchuck. Any one will do, there's no distinction between Wii and Wii U when it comes to the wii remote and those accessories.

New day, new bump of my FAQ ;)

A quick catch-up for anyone who is joining the thread and has any questions on how this all works.

  1. Games with an announced release date: Super Mario Galaxy 2 (available now), Donkey Kong Country Returns (Jan. 22nd in Europe), Punch-Out!! (Jan. 22nd in the US) and Metroid Prime Trilogy (Jan 29th). All of these titles will cost $20 (or regional equivalent), but they will be on sale for half price ($10 or regional equivalent) during their first week on the eShop.
  2. Games planned for future release, without specific release dates given: Kirby's Adventure Wii (aka Return to Dreamland in the US), Punch-Out!! (in Europe), Pandora's Tower and Sin & Punishment: Star Successor. I assume that DK Country Returns will be available some time in the future in the US as well.
  3. Super Mario Galaxy 2's download size is 1.3 GB.
  4. The Wii U Gamepad can be now used for both off-screen play AND as a control method in games that originally supported the Wii Classic Controller (Pro).
  5. Of the titles announced for Europe and the US, only Pandora's Tower and Sin & Punishment support the CCP.
  6. This means that, at this very moment, we do not know whether this feature will be implemented as a system-wide option or it will be restricted to eShop versions of Wii games. We will have to wait and see for any official confirmation on either possibility.
  7. There is no support for the Wii U Pro Controller or GameCube controller via adapter.
  8. eShop/Virtual Console Wii games are not HD remasters. They are the exact same Wii game that you can buy on disc, with the added advantage of not having to swap discs and being capable of skipping the vWii menu. The game seems to be running in vWii mode, for all intents and purposes (no Miiverse, Wii U menu, etc.).
  9. The Wii U Gamepad has a built-in sensor bar that can be used instead of the external one included with the Wii and Wii U. You still need a Wiimote + Nunchuk to play Super Mario Galaxy 2 (and any other game other than S&P and Pandora's Tower!).

I've seen no evidence to suggest the 50% off is happening beyond the first 3 games. It seems like they would have made a bigger point of it were that the case.

Still given they are eShop games there could always be a sale of up to 50% off happening once in a blue moon.

I thought that's what you meant. Yeah, no idea past first three games. We don't know either whether they'll stick to "a game a week", looking at the pitiful VC offerings available for other systems, I sincerely doubt it.

Your faq say that you don't need a wiimote and nuchuck to play s&p2

While this is technicaly true, NO ONE should play the game without a wiimote and nunchuck

Well, that's up to personal preference :) Still, you can play the game with the the CCP, which is what matters for this new feature.

They'll probably skip Wii when there's a Wii U game out that week, like Kirby. Also, is anyone else hopeful that this is a sign we're getting the original DKC trilogy and Metroid Zero Mission soon? The way these sales are set up with their VC counter parts, it would make sense.

Oh wait, we don't really know when DKCR is coming in the US, come to think of it. I wonder what the point of having a different US/Euro schedule even is?

Just paid $13AUD for SMG2 and I'm pretty impressed.

They should do this for xenoblade chronicles to screw over those punks on ebay that keep messing with me.

New day, new bump of my FAQ ;)

If the OP could cut & paste that, it might prevent the same questions over and over.

Oh, and as to #7: My understanding is that for games that support the classic controller (and can therefore use the gamepad buttons), the Wii U Pro Controller can be used as well. I'm not sure if I was reading your faq right in that regard, if not my apologies.

Nintendo only mentioned the Wii U Gamepad. Where did you saw about the Pro controller? If so, awesome!

For those who have downloaded SMG2, is it listed on your NNID account download list I.e if you delete it, can you redownload it for free?

They showed a picture of the Pro right next to the Gamepad during the Direct when explaining the classic compatibility. Pretty sure I didn't imagine it but I could be nuts.

EDIT: am nuts

I'd have jumped in with Miiverse support, or gamepad on waffle games.

Although if I hurry I could still sell my Metroid for £70 on eBay before this hits...

Super Mario Galaxy 2 looks great on Wii U + huge HDTV, so even though a HD-version would be great, it's still a real pretty game.

I remember having some troubles with the aspect ratio in Metroid Prime 3, I don't think I could get it to go widescreen properly. Maybe it's different in the Trilogy?

Still glad it's coming, and at that price, wow.

Reading between the (admittedly never straight) lines here, if Nintendo have finally found a way to bypass Wii Mode and get shortcuts to the Wii Mode software on the Wii U menu and allow the gamepad to be used as a control option, could we be really close to the introduction of the N64 Virtual Console? I mean the games are there, and playable already (a fact a lot of people seem to miss) but if they implement this back door entry system wide rather than on an individual basis they will save themselves apt of time and effort when it comes to making a av games and give them a chance to focus on getting new VC systems.

Sweet! But I already have them. I'll wait one day if they put something I don't have and too hard to get as physical.

Yep. Same would be true of Neo Geo, Genesis, TG16 and even many Wiiware titles. There would be a lack of Miiverse support but I'd take playing them on the gamepad over not playing them (or occasionally paying an upgrade fee) any day of the week.

Metroid Prime Trilogy and Zero Mission in one week would be insane

I read some earlier posts about people saying they don't have black bars. If you don't see the black bars it's because your TV is zooming in the picture, which gives you a worse image than you should get. Go to your TV's options and check for Just Scan, Screen Fit or something like that. I believe LG and Samsung use the term Just Scan for example. It will give you the image as it should be and it will improve the image quality. There even was a thread about this here on GAF not too long ago.

It's not going to magically turn these SD images into something amazing, but it will be slightly better.

The OP should be updated to reflect some of the most commonly-asked questions, because at least two or three people per page ask the same things over and over.

Personal note: My theory? Nintendo will release a patch that will implement the Gamepad features in a system-wide level between today and the release of the first CCP-compatible title, as part of their regular system update schedule. It'd make absolutely no sense to have such a feature for just a couple of (relatively minor) titles and not take advantage of it in any other game.

Sorry, I have been busy. I'll update the OP with this post.
