Wii Titles (SMG2, Metroid Prime trilogy and Punch Out!) Announced for Wii U eShop

Say... I have a question for you gaffers. I managed to find my Metroid Prime Trilogy disc (It amazingly survived being out in the open for 2+ years buried under some stuff with no scratches (that disc is a freaking mirror). In your opinions, should I still get the digital version when it comes out? I'm tempted to.
Absolutely. Support the best 3D Metroid titles.
Yep. I've got a 64GB USB 3.0 Tiny thumb drive. Plenty of space. Nintendo are kings of compression.
That isn't recommended, hope your saves are on the internal memory.

How much work would it have taken to release these games in 1080p? Just looking like they do on Dolphin.
Don't know and don't care. More effort means higher price.

It would have taken re-writing the game to run completely in Wii U mode and not I the vWii that it is running in.

Honeslty Galaxy looks fine on the gamepad and I just played some while the wife was using the TV.

If the did any work on the game I would prefer inplementing Classic control support so you don't need wiimotes

Probably more than you think. And the Wii U is not a high-end gaming PC, so I doubt that bumping the internal resolution of the game x4 would work as well as you suggest.

So what do you do, put the gamepad on a stand and put it on the kitchen table and use the wimmote and nunchuck with it? Does it need to also have the sensor bar in front of it?

Unless you need a wireless one, new Wii U consoles come with the Wii Sensor Bar.

Here's some quick comparisons of Super Mario Galaxy 2 running of the disc. You may not be able to tell from the captured screens but Wii U's Component video output is cleaner than the original Wii's Component output and games will look better upscaled by Wii U on an HDTV than using the original Wii hardware.

best thing about this is the tumbling prices of physical games. Metroid already dropped about £20-30 on ebay and managed to get Xenoblade today for £31, near mint condition bar poor sticker removal.

Same thing happened to Tales of Vesperia. Was uber high price on eBay, then it was announced out of nowhere as a GonD release for the 360 for 20$.

Yes, I would pay good money for SMG HD collection with 1080p 60 FPS visuals, higher quality models, and improved textures... Actually, just the higher resolution would already do wonders :).

Higher res and a good anti-aliasing solution is all the SMG series really needs.

Texturing might look a little worse with more detail, poly edges more apparent, but overall I still think the games would compare favorably with 3D World.

I'd love it. SMG 1 & 2. 1080/60fps with competent AA.

Skyward Sword I think they could get away with something similar. Though 1080p and 30fps would be more likely in that scenario.

Just the idea of the exact same assets at a higher res would tempt me.

I love Nintendo designs uniformly. Mario has such a consistent visual identity now.

Splatoon is creating one of its own. Zelda tends to be the most fluid in the past few generations. Exploring different styles almost by the release. Metroid has been very consistent. Very western with Japanese influences since the jump.

Their Wii output though was something special. That just begged for a higher resolution to show its beauty.

Damn, I'm so glad I got SMG2. I was afraid the graphics would be hard to go back to, but it looks totally fine on my 28" monitor.

You would need to completely rewrite the rendering engine as the Wii uses a fixed function pipeline, while the Wii U uses programmable shaders. That's a few months of work right there probably.

The sdks between the two platforms are also completely different. That would take another month or so to get everything up and running and properly tested.

Then you can start playing with resolution. Maybe 1080p works for some cases, likely not all though. So you'd need to optimize, but that might not be enough to get it where you want. You could probably just call it a day with 720p with AA.

Need to redo the front end, rerender any movies at a higher resolution. Hopefully you have the source assets!

Then unlike with the current setup, a full testing suite needs to be done. This is another month of work for a number of Qa people. So just to change the resolution to be a bit higher with touching practically no other assets you're looking at six months of work. However if something like the ui doesn't look good at the higher resolution, that would need to get done. Maybe some bugs from the previous game would need to be fixed. (I'm probably being very optimistic with my estimate btw).

I imagine these games went through a few days of testing and that is all.

I'm interested getting sin & punishment. I'm seeing lot of praise of that game. Also I hope they re-release zelda twilight princess soon. I want to play it again.

Can i use it on the Metroid games? Or do they force the crappy wiimote stuff?

You would think there would be something in the OP when this question is asked(and answered) multiple times per page....just maybe.

What exactly is "crappy" about the wiimote when it comes to these games in particular? I'm not asking about "random game that I disliked because the controls were bad" either, I am asking about the 3 games listed as being sold. Because Prime was hardly a series I would define as "crappy" when it came to motion controls.

I'm kinda surprised we didn't see GameCube games announced at this time. I assume that when they come they will be implemented in this same way (calling the Wii mode to run the game).

I hope this means GameCube is right around the corner.

Has there been any talk of creating a Metroid Prime Trilogy OT thread? Has there been one made in the past? Heck, were any Metroid Prime games given OT's way back when?

Just got SMG2 and my old file was there! Immediately tried to the Perfect Run in the Grandmaster Galaxy. Died within seconds haha, that is quite possibly one of the most difficult levels in Mario.

I do wonder if we'll ever get N64 or even Gamecube VC titles. It just seems like Nintendo has been avoiding those completely. Which is sad because the Wii got N64 VC titles.

I have a fairly strong suspicion that TP will get the HD treatment like Wind Waker. Like MM 3D, it's taking awhile to get announced after its predecessor got a remake, but it seems a pretty logical step to take, and I'm sure at one point I read that they actually did do some early test work on it before they decided to WW first (I may be wrong on this). I'm thinking this could come out early next year.

I kind of think this might actually mean the opposite. They'll probably got more into this since it takes much less effort to put up. And while I don't forsee there being a lot of them, I do still think Nintendo will make some Gamecube HD remasters, so Nintendo will save them for that select few. I also still believe N64 games will come despite taking so long, and saving GCN titles for the next console's VC makes a lot of sense to me.

When does the sale end? So wait, I can't pay the exact amount in the eShop? I gotta add funds in increments of $10?

Sale ends after a week of release, as it clearly stays in the OP, so the 21st. And no, you can pay exact amounts in the eShop, though you can also do the increments of $10.

I'm surprised too, especially with that Gamecube Adapter. I really do think it's around the corner. Some of those games could be mapped to the gamepad but it would be a little more awkward. For example the main action button on GC was "A" with "X" to the right of it. In order to make it comfortable "A" would have to be Gamecube's "X" etc which would make just about every game confusing since the games are programmed to tell you which button to press which would then be wrong.

Or they could leave it the same, but pressing "A" with "Y" simulataneously is super easy on a GC pad and basically impossible without 2 fingers on the gamepad. Just realizing that now that I'm revisiting my 'Cube games in anticipation. That adapter would really be the way to go, even though my old classic had analog shoulders.

It not was extended?

Edit: Already see, only was extended the time to exchange points for codes, not to earn more points :(

Thanks anyway

Nothing about the promotion was extended. That has always been the redemption timeframe and people and some sites read into it wrong.

Better specs for the system? Seen a lot of people complaining about this and not a single one understanding that you need a competent pc to be able to play these games in 1080p with all the settings, most competent pcs have better specs than WiiU does.

Even if they just updated Galaxy to the 720p engine used for 3D World, they would need to remake the models, lightning and textures for the whole game. The Dolphin-upscaled Galaxy footage I've seen has been extremely "flat" compared to the output by the current engine used by the Tokyo EADs.

N64 is surely coming soon... Right? :(

Well the GameCube hardware is already inside the WiiU. N64 has to be emulated.

Dolphin SMG2 looks amazing rendered at 1080p. Destroys the $20 480p version.

Of course it's better than 480p, since it's at a higher resolution. But the result is still extremely flat at 1080p:

If Nintendo would remake a Galaxy title, they would aim for the standards set in their current titles.

Looking at that picture in portrait on my phone makes me want an Android version of the Galaxy games. Touch controls could replace the motion controls.

touch controls could replace the pointer, but nothing could replace the most important part: the analog stick

Let's recap:

  • NO. You can't use the Wii U gamepad to control Super Mario Galaxy 2, Punch-Out!!, Donkey Kong Country Returns or Metroid Prime Trilogy.
  • NO. These are not HD remasters. These are 1:1 Wii games that run in Wii Mode. The only difference with a retail version is that you can skip having to go to the Wii Menu first.
  • Each of the first three games (SMG2, DKCR/PO!! and MPT) will be on sale during the first week after release respectively. That means that SMG2 will be 50% between Jan. 15 and Jan. 22, DKRC/PO!! between Jan. 22 and Jan. 29, and MPT between Jan. 29 and Feb. 5.

Now, let's speculate a bit.

There's been at least one Wii U system update per month for the past year (with the exception of last October). The latest major update (5.3.0) implement amiibo compatibility. Realistically thinking 1. how likely are we to get a system update between now and Jan. 29 (MPT) and 2. how likely is that Nintendo includes the CCP-to-Gamepad option as a system-wide feature? What's your take on this, guys?

I don't see it . I think if they were going to do it, they would've done it.

Let's pretend they use the VC system menu on Wii games. There's options to remap buttons there, but how would you remap pointer and gyro sensors to buttons? Surely it's not an easy thing to do.

I don't think there's any sort of demand for this kind of feature other than GAF users... But then again were the only type of population who buys WiiU in the first place!

More than remap buttons feature, I want VC style save states in Wii games!

I think they should allow Wiimote NES style controlled games to use the GamePad. I can't think of anything the GamePad can't replicate this way. The GamePad has the same motion sensors IIRC minus lack of IR.

So games like DKCR and Punch-Out could work this way as both have that control option. Games like Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity, MKWii, and other games can still use the tilt.

Only snag might be Other M as I believe you have to move the Wiimote to a vertical position when in 1st-person-mode.

This is great news for me I'm actually happy to have bought my wii u now. I hippie they make skyward sword available on here or other must have wii titles.
