And yes, I had the same reaction the whole conference.

LOL

You can't please everyone. One will despise the exclusive DLCs, and others are looking for exclusive contents to justify their purchases.

10/10 Conference for me with Horizon as the highlight of the show.

It would have been a 11/10 if some JRPGs were shown.

I don't wanna be crucified for saying this, cause I loved the show, but I could have used a little more Morpheus. What they showed did not invest my interest at all.

I know a lot of people wanted no Morpheus, and how the hell can I complain after that showing...but I want to be shown a game that makes me NEED Morpheus.

Shenmue is coming 2017, best case scenario. Last Guardian still seems a ways off. No release date for FFVII. If anything, they've just made 2 more Last Guardians.

I am merely talking about the announcements themselves. That is where Sony destroyed everything. But in terms of exclusives coming this year and features, I give it to Microsoft with ease.

Microsoft had a great conference. Sony's was unreal. And I say this as someone not very interested in Shenmue and with mild interest in Final Fantasy 7.

And for once, Sony had good pacing.

I was skeptical of either TLG, Shenmue or even FF7 remake even showing up. Those three together was absolutely crazy.

I think the best new game shown for E3 as a whole has got to be Horizon. It looked incredible.

Uncharted Demo is one of the games which reminds me of why I love cinematic games after the mediocre cinematic games I had to go through the last three months. There was something about the demo that actually felt like it was going to be a lot of fun, something I felt missing in a lot of games shown.

Easily the best conference. Very nicely paced, while I didn't care much on third party content, Sony did well on it's own content. Would have liked Sony to spend a bit more time on their games coming out this year.

Nah, I appreciate the excitement for the holy trinity But I was never Bothered about any of them and the E3 demos/trailers for them weren't exactly as amazing as actually showing the title names on stage for the fans was.

For me if they'd have finally unveiled The Getaway or AGENT or even GT7 I'd probably be feeling the same way.

I grew up with these games, and this shit has been talked about so long that it became a running joke. To see it come to fruition is beyond words.

Sony's conference was one of those where at the time it just seems like the greatest conference ever... but then when you stop and think, such a reaction seems misplaced.

TLG should have been out last generation
FFVII... who knows when the hell that'll be out
NMS we've seen a million times, and still has no date
Really not convinced about this Shenmue kickstarter; where will the rest of the money needed come from to fund it?
And usual CoD (from now on anyway), Assassin's Creed and Destiny stuff.

Though Guerrilla's IP looked cool and Uncharted looked very good - tech issues aside.

Is a vod uploaded of the conference somewhere? Just got back from work and want to experience the megatons moment by moment.

They actually delivered everything, and the internet broke.

The industry will never have a higher moment. We've peaked here, folks. It's all downhill from here.

I'm still laughing at how ridiculous the prospect of what just happened is.

"Sony is going open their conference with TLG...and then still deliver more megatons afterwards."

That's some hilarious bullshit. And it happened. Jesus.

Why pay, when you don't have to
and the board votes down the project

Sony is probably paying for it. That game is not being made on 2mil,or even 5. The kickstarter is to give executives a viewing how it may be received so they can justify giving it the real development cost and marketing.

Probably to gauge interest, no doubt its getting funded by Sony now imo.

Exactly. Sony wants to see how many people are willing to buy it and will provide the bulk of the funding once they know it'll be profitable. You're gonna see more of this where publishers will fund a game but want to make sure enough people out there want to buy it before plunking down the up front money. Kick starter makes this easy to do

does anyone know why sony isn't funding shenmue 3 themselves to lock up exclusivity (and ensure it can be the game fans want it to be)?

it was a little odd seeing them announce it as a kickstarter.

Yeah, Uncharted 4 and Horizon were the real stars of the show for me.

On hype alone, the "trinity of megatons" is doing wonders for Sony, but I'm curious to see how all three of these titles will actually translate once we've gotten past the sheer excitement going on right now.

The hype is significant among enthusiasts, but probably not for the modern mainstream gamers. Western games are vastly more popular than eastern one in the west and TLG + FF VII remake + Shenmue 3 combined would be lucky to sell as much as the upcoming stale as shit annual COD title. :p

Now that GAF is functioning again, my thoughts on a Sony conference with huge ups and downs:

"That's an applause line”? "Games are the cultural zeitgeist”? "Full stop”? I have to admit, I thought I was in for a complete groaner from start to finish.

Then finally, The Last Guardian, with a release year, followed by Shuhei Yoshida saying "Fumito Ueda is great, don't believe what you hear about how we drove him to quit. Please don't leave us, Ueda! PLEASE?!” It just felt desperate giving him kudos now after everything that’s happened.

Then on to Horizon. It looks good, but it also looks like the vertical slice du jour of Sony’s conference. I will wait that one out.

Then Hitman with no gameplay, gab gab gab, digital release, blah blah blah, exclusive beta/DLC.

Street Fighter V comes on very VERY briefly and, oh BTW, another exclusive public beta. Public betas appear to be the new exclusive DLC at Sony’s conference.

No Man's Sky had a slog of a boring demo, bragging bullshit that will never materialize (All these stars are solar systems, for serious guys!). I started reading my book at that point.

Media Molecule comes on and starts philosophizing garbage, then shows us what appears to be user created “experiences”. Basically, not a game, but Mario Paint for the artsy poseur in the gaming crowd.

Destiny expansion... yawn. Another Ass Creed… yawn. Final Fantasy Chibi game because… yeah sure why not?

And then… Final Fantasy 7 remake. I’m of 3 different minds about this.
First, I am glad it exists just so people can shut the fuck up about it for the next 5 years before they start asking for it to be remade yet again.
Second, I’m glad that the remake will expose the younger generations to just how truly forgettable this game is without that wide-eyed nostalgia.
And third, I can’t believe they would announce something that cannibalizes FFXV. But then again, I don’t recall them giving a release date, which should worry people, since Square Enix isn’t great on their track record with games. If we don’t get firm release dates for KH3 and FFXV tomorrow, we should be concerned.

And then they followed it up with Shenmue III…. Kickstarter. It was just such a terrible contradiction. “We’re so excited to announce this game, but not excited enough to fucking fund it. Do it yourselves, gamers, we can’t be assed.” It’s just a terrible message when you actually break it down. It was literally just to take credit for something they aren’t even truly involved in, which is just stupid.
But at the end of it, at least we now have the "etherware trifecta" out of the way so people can stop fucking droning on about them. But being excited for a Kickstarter is like freaking out N64 Kid style before you’ve unwrapped your Christmas present.

And it looks like exclusive DLC is still a thing, thanks to Batman Arkham Knight. I started reading my book again.

And then Morpheus happened, right? Blink and you missed it, seriously. I’m guessing they didn’t want to sour their presser with bad news that it’s still not affordable to own. Save that for next year, I guess.

Blah blah Spotify blah blah PS Vue blah blah blah.

And now I guess it’s Sony’s turn to give CoD fans their annual handjob with Black Ops 3! I was able to still read my book, go have a whole cigarette and make a cocktail on the rocks from the kitchen and it still wasn't done when I got back. More DLC exclusive and exclusive beta nonsense to top off that shit sundae.

Then the video wrap-up. "OH YEAH, we need to show off Vita! Give it 10 seconds!!” Sony couldn’t make it clearer that their handheld aspirations are permanently dead.

A lot of time given to Disney Infinity and Star Wars. I still haven’t put my book down.

And lastly, a delayed boot up of Uncharted 4: Nathan Drake Standing Still. I really felt bad for whoever fucked that up so badly.

So aside from the etherware trifecta, there was nothing really amazing to report, and some of that is shit Sony can’t even take credit for but are going to try to anyways, which rubs me the absolute wrong way, and the rest of the conference was just a bore otherwise.

But still, those 3 games alone do put them above Microsoft this year.

Only 2 more of these conferences to go, let's see what other big guns are left to fire. But Sony is clearly leading the mindshare pack so far on the good graces of others.

Sure I do. They indulged a lot of people's nostalgia and disguised a very poor lineup of games. Pandering can be done in a bad way and you know it can, so spare me your attitude, bro.

So you don't seem to understand pandering or the company/consumer relationship then.

To pander is to fulfill another's "bad" desires or vices. It is usually direct and not "disguised". If you think Sony fulfilling what their customers want is pandering then that means you think people wanting Shenmue, FF7, TLG, UC4, etc. is a "bad" thing. Once again you either don't understand pandering or you're getting salty other people are happy.

There's no other option in the context you used pandering.

I'm guessing you misunderstood me. I'm saying it was done poorly in this case. I'm not arguing about the morality of it. It's pretty obvious that companies have to pander to their audience, but in this case it was done so blatantly and obviously to disguise a lackluster lineup. They announced an HD remake and let us know that a game that was supposed to be out last generation is finally coming out this generation. Then like 90% of everything else was third party stuff.

I'm sorry I'm not blinded by nostalgia, but it was a genuinely disappointing conference.

Do you own a PS4? I'm wondering how any owner would think, even if they didn't have nostalgia for TLG/shenmue/FF7, would think things like NMS, UC4, and Horizon are lackluster.

does anyone know why sony isn't funding shenmue 3 themselves to lock up exclusivity (and ensure it can be the game fans want it to be)?

it was a little odd seeing them announce it as a kickstarter.

It probably is, probably using the kickstarter to gauge interest before they fully invest.

By far the greatest conference I've watched.

THREE NUKES
+++ TLG right off the bat
+++ FF VII Remake
+++ Shenmue 3

Good stuff

+ DLNA
+ Uncharted 4
+ Horizon

Meh

- Disney Infinity
- CoD Partnership
- Destiny
- AC

9/10
I would put Destiny into the "minus" category, doesnt even deserve a "meh" and you could tell Boyes wanted to get it out of the way quickly. Have to fulfill those co-marketing contractual obligations but yeah the Destiny bit was the lowest point of the conference to me.

This was still the GOAT and will never be topped. False equivalences are happening from the expected people but it's to be expected :)

They have plenty for the Holiday.

That's the big disparity between "gamers like us" and the reality.

They have huge third party partnerships, every major third party titles, remasters, huge indie exclusives. They got tons of games.

They just don't have the big first party exclusives that people like you and I really look for, since it makes PS4 special -for us- versus how many games we can just buy on our souped up PCs. And we've seen a lot of movement within Sony first parties, but a lot of stuff has been delayed/didn't go as smoothly, and we're seeing the result of that. Everything first party is 2016.

But PS4 has a zillion big games this Holiday. And that's why you will still see it selling very well, whilst people keep asking "where are the games?" It's just in the form of third party games/remasters/indies.

This is really the bottom line. 2016 to end of life PS4 will be insane for Sony dev fans.
I do wonder what caught them off-guard this gen, as the leap from PS3 to PS4 was nothing compared to the previous jump.
