New Fantastic Four Trailer

Looks like it takes the slightly different plot of the ULTIMATE fantastic four comic (although even the first attempt fox had did this a little bit) and tells basically the same story as the original fantastic four film with a C list cast and a lower budget.

I predict box office doldrums , not total disaster but I think fox will quietly cancel the planned sequel and try again in 9 years and 11 months and 29 days just to hold on to the rights. I think honestly, that they don't care about keeping them but they want something out of disney/marvel before they'll hand them back.
The cast is pretty on-point. Young, sure, but they're a solid group of actors.

C list cast

One thing that didn't occur to me until the latest round of TV spots: Jamie Bell's voice sounds really odd coming out of Thing's mouth.

I actually dig it. They always rough up Ben Grimm's voice, but having it be matter of fact and human makes it even more fucked up. And works better for the Alicia stuff, because - I'm guessing - she'll think it's a normal guy, touch Ben's face, and the 'you're beautiful' will have ever more resonance.

That's C list cast? What?

It's C-list because their all young and up and coming actors that don't demand 20 million each like say the A listers present in an avengers films or the A and B listers present in the X-men movies.

They could be fine actors but mostly , they aren't big stars. Is that really that hard to grasp ?

If this movie takes off (it probably won't) then they might become a bit bigger, well known- demand higher paycheques etc.

I'm not really saying it like it's a bad thing either - it's just purely a pay cheque thing - they cost much less to cast then the original 2 movies did because Jessica Alba (like or or not) was a well known name when the original came out , as was Micheal Chiklis.

The rest of the cast though ? not so much - Ioan Gruffudd - ever hear of him ? no - yeah he's done very little outside of supporting rolls but he played Mr Fantastic 10 years ago.

Even Chris Evans, who is now totally an A list superstar (playing captain america) was only in a handful of short films before FF came out.

So to sum up - I'm not knocking the "C-list" cast for a lack of talent, I'm saying they aren't bankable and probably were cast cheaply as compared to both the original 2 FF movies and most of the more recent Cape based entertainment.

You basically don't know what you're talking about, then.

Hell, the "A-List" that you're referring to hasn't existed for like 10 years now, and even when it did, it was like 3 actors.

Not only does it still exist but it's more like 50+ actors. I just checked the IMDB page for this new fantastic four and I haven't heard of any of these people. I looked at the 5 leads (counting doom) and outside of the actor for Ben Grimm, they come from an almost entirely TV background even doing voice acting for videogames. There's nothing wrong with a TV background but - you aren't going to be getting 10 million $ a picture at that level, hell I'd be surprised if any of the principle cast is making even half that. Checking the films production budget I see a figure of 122 million $ , given the required use of extensive visual effects I'm assuming 70-80 million went to CG leaving 40-50 million for the rest of the film of which perhaps 30% is paying ALL of the actors. 2 million a piece for the 5 main characters and 500,000-1 million for the supporting cast. In comparison - 100 million dollars of Age of Ultrons budget was spent on the leads. Even the last Xmen film cost 200 million , 2 hours long , tons of VFX leaving around 80 million for the rest , big A listers like patrick stewert and Ian mckellen probably earning 5 million each for their 10 minutes of screen time, Hugh Jackman getting 10 million +. It's just a big difference. It also goes back to what the cancelled 3D version of this film represents, this new trailer shows plenty of VFX shots that look like they were ready made just for a 3D post conversion but - that costs 50-100,000$ a minute to pull off to an adequate level. It also takes a few months and perhaps given the films already over 100 million in budget - that 10 million was probably more efficiently spent making some of the action scenes look better or as I've heard - the re-shoots weren't free either.

It does looks like the actress playing the invisible woman will be recognizable over the next year or 2 , she's got a few big films in the pipeline so who knows ? perhaps she'll be the next Jennifer Lawrence ?

I will give the film this - it looks better than the 2005/2007 duo and having a fresh faced cast is actually a plus in my book because it won't distract me like Jessica Alba did , I also love that they've cast more then just a dozen white people. Looking up the 2005 efforts budget - it too was fairly low - just 100 million $ but it was also barely 90 minutes long , shorter films means less possible VFX shots which means lower budget. Also as I mentioned in my previous post - no one really commanded a big paycheque even in the 2005 film , hell they might have been paid less then the current cast.

Nah, he's just using terminology he doesn't quite grasp in a means to sound more authoritative, while muddying the point he's trying to make, which might be an okay one regarding budget concerns, but basically got buried under the unintentional bullshit he coughed up.

Since when have actors mattered in big budget SFX heavy action films? Even in the 80s/early 90s it barely mattered.

Since Will Smith broke out, none of his films have cracked $700M worldwide. Ditto for Tom Cruise. Those were the two most bankable stars of the last 20 years.

No, AFAIK. Never seen a trailer that doesn't featured the studio in charge.
That's what I thought. I mean, it clearly stands out. My girl had said to me a few days ago that she didn't know Marvel was making FF, and I was wondering why she had that idea..since watching the Daily Show that day, I've seen various commercials now on TV just not add the FOX bit. Funny stuff..

So I wanted to post about this movie here on GAF, and I feel like what I was bringing to the table was the real news about how little buzz there actually is about this movie, but it might just be the fact that this thread hasn't been posted in in 5 days and is resting at page 20 of OT, and is the newest thread about the film if you exclude the X-Men crossover thread (sitting at page 17, for reference).

This movie comes out in a week and a half.

With that said, pre-sale tickets have been going here in Canada for about a week, and in the Toronto area, it seems about 15-20 tickets have sold so far. That area covers about 30 theaters. That's literally the worst I've ever seen for a movie getting AVX theater treatment. I know people were expecting this to fail, but I'm officially expecting a domestic BOMB the likes of which hasn't been seen in a while.

Can I ask where you're getting these numbers from?

If you attempt to buy tickets from Cineplex.com for an AVX showing, you can see which seats are already taken in the chart where you pick which seats you'd like. Additionally, the reserved seating for the differently abled is at static locations based on the seating arrangement of the auditorium and is very easy to deduce. I've made it a habit to routinely check upcoming films as a means to predict their domestic box office intake.

A friend of mine worked at Hall H at Comic-Con this year, he told me that when the special reel was put up for this movie, he could see the cringe in everyones faces, and a lot looked down to their phones instead, and it was perhaps the worst reaction in Hall H he has ever seen on his life.

I am expecting a bomb of epic proportions here guys.

Even in the dark?

Well don't be shy, post your findings.

Was a little disappointed when I saw the trailer before ant man because the tank bit was cut about a second before the American trailer so we didn't see it go poof.

So that trailer told me.

That the kid is super smart practicing shit.

Then grows up to become a scientist.

Then goes to space.

Suddenly 4 magic people.

Things exploding.

They have to kill a guy called doom.

FWIW, I'm pretty sure Jurassic World's embargo was up the day before it's premiere. Think it was over the afternoon of 6/10, and the movie "premiered" Thursday night, 6/11.

Only putting that out there, as Jurassic World had a mixed reception but it wasn't negative, overall. For comparison, I think Mad Max: Fury Road's embargo was over the Monday of the premiere week.

If I recall, Jurassic World reviews came out 2-3 days before release (correct me if I'm wrong).

It was on 6/10, around the afternoon (2 PM Pacific, I think?). The movie technically premiered on 6/12, but like most wide-release movies, screenings were available on Thursday night (6/11).

So I'm not sure if his tweet means reviews are embargoed until the day before the official "premiere" date, or if it's the day before actual screenings are available (like JW).

/dead
Still, embargoes being up until the release of a film is 99% of the time a sign that the film sucks. As much as I want this movie to be the 1%, the chances of that at this rate are slim.

That's a good point. Do we have a date for the red carpet premiere?

Every part of me wants this film to bomb so hard Fox has no argument to not sell the FF back to Marvel/Disney.

No idea.

I mean, it could be complete crap. Waiting that long to release reviews certainly doesn't shout confidence on the studio's part, though. I was using JW as an example of a very successful and generally well-review movie that had a late embargo, but I'm sure there are many, many counter-examples.

Since when did movies have review embargoes like this

Or am I just dumb and never noticed
Most movies have review embargoes. For a more recent example, Ant-Man's reviews came out a week before release as a show of confidence (it started out high on RT, then went low, then climbed back up & is fluctuating between 79% & 80%). When a film's review embargo is up until the release of the film, there's a 99% chance that the film sucks.
