RockBand 4 for PC is about to fail

This was doomed to fail from the beginning. Whilst I'm sure there are people who would want this for PC, I've always seen Rock Band/Guitar Hero as living room/console games.

Expected. How can they dare asking people to fund a port ? Come on, what the heck is that -__-

Especially after their claim about a potential PC version before the console release.

Funding a Port is OK but only when it makes sense.

Who would play a party game such as Rock band where you just need the big screen and room around it for your friends, on a PC ...

I know someone who does online karaoke nights online with the console versions and wanted the PC version to simplify things.

I never got the impression there was a significant demand for a PC port. Maybe back in 2008 or 2009, but not now.

It doesn't makes sense to fund a port of such a big game. They claimed that it didn't made sense because the audience wasn't here, because of piracy, and now beg for money to port it. Also, 1.5 millions to port a rythm game ? What the heck is that -__-

How long does Harmonix last?

  1. MS dropped Kinect just as their Fantasia launched
  2. Amplitude seems to be flop although this was cheaper to make
  3. Rock Band 4 is severely underperforming
I don't know how much slack they have left.

1) they didn't publicize this well at all
2) most PC gamers I know are suspicious of the need for a port; I think they'd have happily purchased the game if it was released on Steam, but it wasn't.
3) I hope Harmonix does okay. I am sad we never got to see that rhythm shooter.

At least now when people give Harmonix shit for not making a PC version, they can tell them they had their chance and to suck a lemon. Should've done a failed Fig for a WiiU port as well, those people seemed to be the most vocal leading up to launch.

The story behind this whole thing is kinda ridiculous, and more than anything, the PC port of RB4 seems like a move of desperation to seek a new source of income over at Harmonix.

It's a shame, but sadly they made their bed, now they sleep in it.

A PC version would be great simply for the ability for people to mod in their own songs.

Like I loved GH2 on the PS2 and loved it even more when I discovered that people had made their own charts to go with songs and pieces of music that you could hack together in a new GH2 iso and then play on the PS2.

Obviously mod support like that wouldn't have been official at all because they would want to sell DLC so wouldn't want people to mod in their own versions of popular songs but still, it might prompt a community to spring that make their own charts for various songs. Like how Osu! (EBA/Ouendan clone) has (or had, been a while since I checked in) had a pretty good community making note charts for a bunch of songs.

Yea. I thinktll happen either way somehow. What else are they going to do ....

The attempt to bring back plastic musical instrument games on console was already a little misguided in my opinion.

There was no way it would get that much interest on PC, especially when they're asking for the port to be funded for them. I can't think of much worse than being sat on an office chair in front of a desk with a huge tatty plastic guitar.

I'm wondering this as well. I'm not too surprised that this failed, but I'm disappointed for Harmonix. They really are a special developer and I don't want them to go, but they seem to really be struggling to find their footing in the post-music game craze that they originally created and flourished in.

Edit: I want to say that for the record, I thought that RB4 would be the grand return of the genre and yet whenever I floated the idea to friends, I was ridiculed. I ended up not getting it. If I couldn't get my non-gaming friends excited, Harmonix certainly couldn't.

It kind of breaks my heart.

It was bad form to even suggest this considering the unfinished state console Rock Band 4 was in, I know they said they were going to outsource it but that doesn't excuse the situation.

being on FIG fucked it over

kickstarter would have been a better idea

also fuck them for holding out on PC as if it's a final trump card to keep the franchise alive

Kickstarter would have probably been a better idea, but I still don't think they would have hit their $1.5 million goal. That still put it in the top couple of dozen gaming projects on KS.

$700k is very impressive, but they asked for far too much as is. Harmonix has been making bad calls for a long time now, it's a wonder they've managed to survive this long.

I am surprised how many people seem to conveniently ignore the fact that you can also play PC games on the tv. Agreed that it makes no sense to play Rock Band with 4 people on a desk monitor, but that would not be how anyone would play it anyways.

People ignore it because it's a tiny portion of the market.

Nobody would need to be at a desk. It's going to fail because it's a port of a game in a series that has well past the height of its popularity. Harmonix are too late in trying to appeal to PC gamers with this.

Well people aren't always over so just sitting at the desk with the plastic guitar playing songs is fine.

So after several months they now want to bring rock band to pc with people's money?

And they promise to have the same fixes as consoles, wow what a deal.

And mouse and keyboard support...for menus!

Seriously? Lmao.

I still think it's kinda nuts that they used Rocksmith as a point of comparison. It's not a remotely similar game.

I guess I'm ok with this. Harmonix didn't want our money when the community begged for Rock Band to come back. They only brought it back when their other projects had failed and they needed cash and even then, the game wasn't really even finished.

Isn't that where 99% of people keep their PC's?

How much of that 99% use their PC to play video games? How much of it is invested into Steam? Steam is where they want this and one of the big points Valve has been making for the past several years is that there is no need to be at a desk to play these games.

Fact that only 44 people claimed the only option between $49 and $150 bucks is crazy
I mean 50 bucks for a badge, pick and drumstick? lootcrate want there crap back.

Crowdfunding a port of a finished game was a terrible idea to begin with.

Also, RB4 was lackluster compared to 3 and 2, no DLC library, Heydey of rhythm games is over etc. etc.

I have a library of over 400 RB songs but had zero interest in RB4. RB3 is totally sufficient for me (save for the lack of competitive modes but RB4 doesn't have that either).

I never expected it to succeed in the first place. Way too high asking price for what will be a niche game on PC. Tbh I'm surprised they will probably crack the 50% mark.

I have absolutely no idea why you're telling me this.

The amount they raised is still mighty impressive.

I would've rebought instruments for my PS4 had it been a little less expensive. I think that was fheir biggest misstep...making things a little too prohibitively priced. 250 for plastic/faux instruments? Cmon son.

But I'm not going to completely shit on them...had a blast with their games last gen. I hope they recover.

Why would I or anyone want to fund a port of a lesser experience than the three previous mainline games in the series? Even with all the damn DLC I have for the Rock Band games across TWO platforms, I had zero desire to buy back into the series considering the regression, er... "back to basics" approach from Rock Band 4. Not to mention that the fate of the peripheral manufacturer is completely unknown, and the quality of future peripherals (from Pelican!) look to be regressing too. What a great proposition this was!

Let me know when Guitar Hero Live is on fig. At least that tried to be something new and innovate on the core idea.
