I've got empathy for these people. I feel horrible that they find themselves in a horrible position, but at the same time I will not give them an excuse for the fact they voted for a nazi. They had a choice. We always have a choice.

Even if this was a weird aberration because of Clintons liabilities, this electionew showed just how bad our organization is at the local level. We won't be able to take either section of Congress for a while and most of the state governments are gone.

I guess one thing we'll have to consider policy-wise is how to ease the transition into being a free-trade, more-open-borders country in a world that becomes increasingly smaller by the year.
I've been thinking quite a bit about this, and honestly, I don't think that you can have free trade without a robust social safety net.
It's going to get ugly for these Trump supporters over the next four years. One thing that's pretty amazing is that they've harmed us all with their vote, but they really fucked themselves because Paul Ryan is about to put them in a world of hurt. I probably get a tax cut out of this, actually, but these guys are fucked.
So what is smart policy to push to voters that can a) beef up a safety net for those who need to transition to other fields, and b) can be pitched in a way that the "hand-outs" attack isn't as effective pushback against it. The big issue is that these Trump voters will reject policies that they perceive as being beneficial to non-whites in any way, so how do we thread that needle in presenting such policies?

Trump improved 20 points among those making $30,000 and under. He dropped almost 10 points among those making over $100,000 and $200,000.
Obama beat Romney 63-35 and McCain 65-33 and Kerry beat Bush 61-39 among those under $30,000. In the next category Obama beat Romney 57-42 and McCain 55-43.
Romney won those over $100,000 by 54-44.

EDIT EDIT: I want to clarify that when I say I've come around I don't mean that I agree 100% with everything pigeon has said or is saying. I do mean that I've basically given up on the idea that there was some kernel of goodness in the Trump voter we should try to catch. My republican friends and family helped make it pretty obvious that some people made the choice to latch onto that kernel of goodness and follow where it lead them, while others threw it in the garbage so it wouldn't bother them anymore.

In my defense I didn't know that Trump has a magic ability to literally become worse with each consecutive day he exists.

I know Trump pretty much put all the governing to Pence, but Trump is going to have to pull his weight as well. He's going to find out this job isn't just sitting around and giving speeches. He's going to have to do 4 years of constant travel and selling ideas. This man is going to look rough when it's all over.

So I'm just going to come out and say this: I spent years arguing that we need to accept the rural white voter.
After 2004 I realized that America was a much more divided country than I thought it was, and I needed to try harder to understand the people who didn't live in California. I was surrounded by smug liberals who said that flyover states were full of stupid people.
I made these arguments! I said we needed to understand them and their desires! I advocated for dropping gun control for a long time. For this entire year I've been saying it's very important for the Democrats to rebuild rural white communities when they get into power, even though they are full of racists. I felt strongly that we needed to be more accepting and try to build community with the people of Ohio and Indiana and Nebraska.
I was wrong. This is 2016. I understand the rural white voter and their desires now. They want me to go away, and they voted for it. They do not want to live in peace.
I am not smug when I consider the life or opinions of a rural white voter. I am terrified. They are members of a proud old American tradition that allows people of color to be lynched for being uppity, then elects the lyncher to public office. They are the original sin of America.
You might have the privilege of saying that we need to stop condescending to them about how oppressing people of color is bad and learn to accept them.

Any other NJ voters taking solace in the fact that more casinos were shut down by 77% of the voting population? At least that's something to feel good about. In addition my county was only 1,000 votes away from choosing Peter Jacob for Congress which would have been unthinkable a decade ago.

There is a shitload of energy on the grassroots level for, what I might as well call, "not shitty Americans" and it is literally the day after the election. People are already trying to figure out how to fix this party (including in this thread!). On Twitter and Facebook I see tons of people more motivated than ever before to go out and make a difference and to fight back against hate at every level of government. I mean we are literally already seeing protests!

Yup. They hate us. I think white liberals can try to bridge that divide, but they want PoC dead and buried or at the very least stuffed into poor neighborhoods that they can drive through quickly with the windows rolled up.
I mean, it's fine if straight white liberals want to do this, but I don't think it's the role of PoC, or LGBTQ people for that matter, to do this. It's up to us to work together to vote in a bloc for the Democratic party and then agitate within the party for our goals while allowing the leadership to set up the courts, etc., to help get us what we need in order to be treated fairly.
I voted Yes because I work in the gambling industry and if Trump's policies cut off income from foreign markets there sure as hell better be an expanding domestic one.

I defy you to point out the "praise" of Trump in that statement. You can make a better case that Obama praised Trump in his speech today when he said he was "heartened" by his talk with him after talking about being on the "same team".
It's a real question. The 1600 guys talked about it, as did the Slate gabfest crew. He was strongest where Hill was weakest, in some ways.
True, but you can't deny that this election had very low turnout. And obviously, as is usually the case, that's bad for Democrats.
