Chris Dring: Dragon Age The Veilguard launch numbers in the UK broadly identical to those of Dragon's Dogma 2 and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth

Info via GamesIndustry.biz Microcast (the discussion about the numbers starts around minute 36).

Dragon Age: The Veilguard:
  • DA:V sales in the UK are broadly identical to those of Dragon's Dogma 2 and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth (Chris mentions that it's weird how similar the launch numbers are).
  • It performed slightly worse than SW Outlaws.
  • He doesn't know if the DA:V launch sales have met EA expectations, but from his perspective, he seems to think that the game has done alright.
CoD: Black Ops 6:
  • There was a significant spike in numbers during the second week.
  • It's the 3rd best selling game of the year in the UK, just behind EA FC 24, while EA FC 25 is at #1.
  • Across Europe, it ranks just behind Helldivers 2.
  • Overall, it's a pretty strong launch for MS/ABK, and it's still topping the charts.

A shame Rebirth has to be in the same sentence as this... thing.

I loved Rebirth and I hope more people will get to play it soon. (PC port will help that)

Worse than SW Outlaws seems a pretty nice results, considering Outlaws was an AAAA game and this one just AAA.

CoD dying 'any day now since World at War'.

Just a reminder, this idiot defended Starfield during some weeks/months...

And yes, given that he likes to appear more than the numbers he reports, and he always report numbers in a way to generate flame war, he is a idiot.

What did he say in the podcast to generate a flame war?

So FFVII-Rebirth was a single platform and S-E said it didn't meet their expectations, but a game out on all platforms sold the same?

Well, whatever, until you see some hard data, you can't be sure what any of the real numbers are. I also can't tell by his wording in the tweet if he suspects the numbers he's being fed are fake or not, because they're suspiciously all the same?

I definitely think EA thinks of this game as a success.
It was not trash. So they have atleast finally a template they can go ahead with.

DA:V was a testing ground success for what Mass Effect would be. God save us all.

Bit of a head-scratcher.

SW Outlaws must have over-performed in the UK or DD2/FFVIIR heavily under performed there as the US YTD has them both well inside the top 20 and Outlaws isn't even charting.

It performed worse than Outlaws in its strongest region, and about the same as Rebirth on one platform that was considered as a disappointment by Square Enix.

Hmm .... DD2 sold 2.5 million copies in the first week and was considered a success. SW Outlaws sold a million copies in a month and was a huge disappointment for Ubisoft ... So what's DA:V in that case? A success or a failure?

How is doing slightly worse than a confirmed sales bomb "alright"?

This guy uses bizarre metrics.

Well SW outlaws has the IP attached to it so it needs to perform exceptionally well to make up for that. Capcom was very happy with Dragon Dogma's sales.

This is so vague we can barely draw any conclusions. Doesn't feel like the UK is super representative for the rest of the world.
Looking at North America, Dragon's Dogma is still #6 YTD, Rebirth is #12 and Outlaws didnt even manage to enter the top 20. Those are probably huge differences in sales numbers between those 3, but in the UK they seem to have sold similarly?

Rebirth was only on 1 platform.
The problem with Rebirth is everyone knows it's game 2 of 3. I think Square really messed up making this a 3 part instead of a 2 part. They've had that team tied up for 4 years longer than they probably had to(We could have been close to KH4 release), and released a game that a lot of people are going to buy at a discount closer to the release of the 3rd game.

ME:5 is too far along in its development to be affected by this. That game also appears to be in very good hands.

"Slightly worse than SW: outlaws". WAT?
Brand recognition.

We also have Steam global CCUs. Where Veilguard did 90K vs 220K for DD2.

Edit: Maybe Veilguard for UK 🇬🇧 is like David Hasslehoff for Germany, 🇩🇪, kind of a big deal! 😉

Dragon's Dogma 2 did 2.5 million in the UK or globally?

2.5M in UK is probably what EA would expect while hoping for 5M units in the US. This game was in the works for a long time which could give it a bloated budget anywhere between $150M to $250M. Meaning the game needs to at least sell 6M units to break even.

No idea, i will nevere lost my time listening to this kind of stuff. But pay attention how this guy reports numbers. Always indirectly, always generating unhealthly (to put it gently) engagement.
He's not allowed to share the numbers, so the only thing he can give is comparisons with other games.

I don't see anything unhealthy about his statements here. He's comparing a 2024 RPG to other 2024 RPGs.

I was talking about global sales figures.

You guys gonna have to come to terms with the fact that the game is a success. The broader public doesn't care about wokeness.

Did he really lumped FFVIIRev with Veilguard?

What a tragedy, FFVII deserved more, now I have to see it mentioned next to that pile of garbage from Bioware, we deserve all the Concords till the industry implodes :/

Look I'm the one here pushing to not jump to conclusions about it being a complete FAILURE, but you'd have to be delusional to think it's a SUCCESS. All the numbers we've seen have been at best mediocre for a AAA fantasy RPG in a series with a long history.

The OP was only for UK sales, Looking it up, FF7RB topped the UK charts it's first week but DD2 debuted at 2nd, but with DAV, 2 Fifa games and a CoD are above it, so it would be at the most, in the top four.

Still, this doesn't give exact numbers and this is only for the UK. We have no idea about the rest of Europe or the US.

They are still trying to gaslight people into buying the story that the game is doing well, when every metric under the sun suggests it didn't.

Dragon's Dogma did worse than a confirmed bomb and I'd say it's sales are "alright:.

They are both RPGs that released in 2024. That's why he's comparing them.

We already knew it was a success from 100K CCUs on Steam alone, the game probably sold a metric shit ton of EA Ultimate subs as well. Now we have confirmed data (from parallels to Rebirth, a console and PS5 exclusive) strongly suggesting the consoles are dramatically outperforming PC. Pack it up, it's over, the game's doing very well. No it's not GTA, but it's probably sitting somewhere between 2 mil and 3 mil in just a couple weeks.

Something seems off about all this.

Star Wars Outlaws sold 1 million according to Insider Gaming. Dragon's Dogma 2 sold 2.5 million in a week. Veilguard supposedly sold less than Outlaws but on part with DD2? I guess it could be that either Veilguard just did much better in the UK than it did anywhere else or DD2 did worse.

Veilguard didn't hit 100k CCUs on Steam. We have no idea what EA subs did. Rebirth was only on one platform and Square Enix was not happy with its sales.

Maybe its break even or maybe its a enough sales number, or maybe its a flop especially in the bigger market in USA, we will never know. Possibly its still break even or enough sales to survive. It is such a pity, it could have been an instant number one world wide that might even match BG3 sales number, but I'm sure they lost so much of fans and sales due to its force and push for twisted woke agenda especially gender ideology. Even those long time Dragon age fans, allot are turn off by the games force and push agenda. There might even be a record number of refunds. And some might resell there gaem (if tis physical) or might not even finish the game. It such a pity for a great franchise. This push for twisted woke agenda is poisoning gaming and they don't care if its affecting jobs, sales, and creativity, what is important for them is there agenda be push.

Yeah its pretty interesting. Seems like UK was either a strong market for Outlaws, a weak market for DD2 or both.
