Ghost of Yotei |OT| Jin there, done that

Tell me about the dog.
All I know is he randomly comes to save my ass when I'm about die. Seems like he is out on his own quest. We are 2 lone wolves crossing paths now and then. PlayStation tells me my completion is 10% after a good 12 hours of play, so I've barely scratched the surface.

Oh and great job with the pre-release marketing, Sony!:pie_eyeroll:

Gotta say I love Atsu more and more. I don't know about the English version, but she's such a likable character in Japanese. Snarky, but not the annoying type like Alloy. Very direct and genuine and has some great back and forth with many of the NPCs. Jin has nothing on her as far as I'm concerned.
Jin was a stoic, boring fuck, she is definitely more enjoyable if you like the snarky type.

Cracked me up when she pretended to be a crazy ex-lover
Didn't reached that part yet, i only have like short of 6 hours of gameplay, hades 2 is sucking me dry...

Btw for people on the edge, stick with lethal, it's not one hit death after you get some yellow balls for healing and get a couple of skill points, you can resist 3-4-5 hits, even better if you have the amulet that heal you automatically when your health reach zero.

And yes you can style on enemies, they take more than 2 hits to die when you progress a little.

I have an odd bug. No matter what setting I use for the "items visible on back", I only ever have the shamisen on my back. Is it broken on everyone's game?

I dont understand the reason why choosing to sleep until mornings, results in the main character waking up in the middle of the night and it takes a while until the sun rises. It's definitely a weird and annoying choice. If I choose morning I want to see light, not darkness

Can't get over how great the open world is. Exploring is so organic. Huge upgrade over GOT. It is not Cyberpunk, RDR2, or Elden Ring, but I feel like a lot of reviewers unfairly compare it to generational games. So far, this is the best open world game of the past couple years

He mentioned on his podcast the other day that he hasn't started it yet.
A bit strange, as he's usually pretty good at getting his reviews out prior to release, and he was pretty big on Tsushima. Haven't heard a peep about this from him.

Hopefully it's coming, but I am feeling skeptical. This is unlike him.

Why the heck can you only climb rocks that are covered in bird poop?

Are they trolling us, or do bird droppings offer optimal grip?
Well, it looks like chalk, I guess.

Later into the session I had an interesting encounter with a bear guarding a shrine in his den.
I was able to lure him to the second entry of his cave and snuck around outside back to the main entrance to get the shrine skill point.

Other than that, I'm still hard-locked in 'countryside admiration mode'. Love the autumn realm.

I will never understand the fucking the stupid trend or putting yellow or white paint in climbable rocks, its so stupid and unnecessary. Even my girlfriend who is not a gamer commented on that while watching me play the game yesterday

This games does difficulty right. It lets you adapt it to your progress and skill level on the fly during the game. For example, I switched to r1 r2 combat per Gonzito's recommendation so I put it back on normal for an hour or so because I kept hitting the wrong buttons and dying. Now I am used to it, have some upgrades including Soma's OP armor so I put it on Lethal. The ability to customize different aspects is so nice too.

No, it puts my last used weapon or the shamisen if I use it. Maybe reset the game?

Btw, you guys notice the sound design is so good that depending on the weapon on your back, you make different noises while running/climbing? I can hear the shamisen jostling about. Like you can hear the strings vibrating when jogging etc. Very neat detail.

I enjoyed the climbing mechanic in Horizon: Forbidden West where you can climb almost anywhere and got help from seeing these symbols and lines.

I don't know if GoY allows that level of climbing, but it strikes a good balance between highly specific parts and Breath of the Wild's freeroam.

Atsu is unbearable... Luckily, the Japanese voice softens it a bit, but the substance is the same.
(Jubei could have slapped her several times when she's whining to get Mad Goro back.)

I had a battle last night with around a dozen enemies and entered the zone - perfect parries, the occasional weapon lob, dodging arrows all over the shop. I laughed when it was over and I almost felt sorry for the poor buggers 😂

This game can make you feel pretty good sometimes.

Found one of the Takezo guy next to the NIIKAPPU WATERFALL and i tried beating him with the perfect parry Armor and i simply couldnt do shit against. The spear attacks..tried many times and never found the timing.

Switched to Taro set. And disarmed and threw his katana and he was a joke on lethal.

I think im donw with that perfect parry Armor

I will wait until more people have finished to go more in depth about the story ones.

But from the perspective of the world design, I just felt Tsushima had a better world, or at least it felt more real. Two issues for me, outside of the starting area I feel like I can remember more of Tushima's isle. A ton of Yotei feels like a less impressive version of the starting area, I was originally wowed when I saw the vast open plain with the horses and flowers, but every area following that was less impressive. The Second is that this game is very fond of loading a seperate area because they couldn't work it into the map, many of the climbs in Tsushima where so impressive because you could finish them and look back and see real areas you had been traversing hours ago. Some major shrines are still like this, but others are something you load into and its a real shame.

From a gameplay perspective, one of the main new items firearms, absolutely suck balls and enter the game confusingly right at the end of the game. They dont really add anything and the rifle strait up sucks balls compared to the heavy bow. The pistol has its uses, but its only more useful that the sword oil.

The main characters lack of focus in terms of weapons, in that instead of stance changing its weapon swapping is fun, I will admit that. However, the stealth/action choice seems to have massively tipped towards action in this game. Ironically one of the new weapons I found actually makes stealth harder after you get it, as it gives you a ranged takedown option that overrules your regular takedown and locks you out of chain assassinations when you need them most. Its supposed to switch to regular takedown when that would be available, but it often glitches and refuses to let you take them down normally, only for a character to suddenly turn around while your trying to get it to work and force you into combat.

I feel like you spend less time with some of the key side characters compared to Tushima too, like the same people would keep showing up region to region with new quests that push their individual lives forward, in this its like 2 quests and you never see them again.

As for the main story, I didn't care for it once one of the side characters twists was revealed, as soon as that motivational switch happened it lost its edge and was just going through the motions.

Stuff like that.

Just crushed Takezo on hard.
final version on top of mount Yotei

That will put hair on your chest. I assume this is the hardest boss in the game lol. Fuck me.
What armour are you rocking? the Bounty Master armour makes perfect parries (and perfect dodges) simple along with the three additional counters, add in the Fathers Charm to get health every time you parry and the Charm of Mount Yotei to decrease damage taken and also provide additional health boost on perfect parries and bosses are pretty easy no matter the difficulty level. Not saying its the best all round armour for moving around the world (I still do wear that one) but its certainly awesome for bosses

Nono. Hold triangle. (Not L1). When they movie, releases!

Yeah, I had that setting enabled where you can turn the holds into a single tap.

Turning it off has made things a lot more simpler. That setting actually fucks with other things too and makes the general playability worse, in my experience.

Agreed.

I was trying lethal (as otherwise the enemies feel a bit too spongy for my tastes), but found the tendency of enemies continually rushing in to be far too prohibitive to an enjoyable flow of engagement. Glad that in custom difficulty I'm able to turn the aggression down and damage up.

Makes the fights feel far more realistic and measured when mobs aren't constantly bum rushing me and forcing evasion and blocking, gives room to breath while keeping the damage feeling realistic.

I don't know why, in "simplified button presses" they change the weapon swap (R2) from hold to toggle. So instead of holding R2, hitting a button for the next weapon, and releasing, you have to tap R2, press the button, then tap R2 again to activate.

There's nothing "simplified" about this, in fact it's so convoluted that it destroys the flow of combat mechanically. I was using simplified for things such as the bamboo strikes to help with these old man reflexes, but had to switch back due to how it fundamentally compromises the flow of combat.

Have no idea why they made that change.

In order to fight this boss it forces you to equip the 5 takezo charms. It didn't dawn on me until after beating it I could've swapped charms mid fight I bet to make it easier.

Lol, Amen. I had that on for the first 15 hours of gameplay and it got me killed so much. Toggle for selecting weapons and taking out and putting my bow away. Trying to put the bow away once I got charged turned into a series of unfortunate events for me.

Didn't know this was made and by IGN of all places. But yes, this is literally the issue I hinted at in my prior post, the eye rolling "revenge bad" that cropped up again here.

Once the main plot took this turn... it just became shit, like if this was a true Samurai revenge story she should of kept killing until she died herself in the mutual self destruction after her task was done, a dead (wo)man walking, a ghost.

Instead though we got this plot again for like the 5th time. I suspect she will get a sequel when Jin never did, and we all know why. It sure as hell aint because shes a better character.
