Xbox One sells one million+ (sell through to consumers) in all territories worldwide

The PS4 must have sold 8M by now, based on the 1M it started with.

Hmm, maybe demand is disproportionately higher in the US; or alternatively supply is more limited. It wouldn't surprise me.

Don't paint it like bad news though. Selling out everything that was manufactured is pretty grand. If they were able to ship more they would have sold more. Same goes for Sony. Both built a bunch of console both sold all of them out. Overall it is good news for both. As we head towards Christmas these things are going to be flying off store shelves.

He did assert that the NA figures of Xbox One would be comparable to the PS4 NA numbers.

I think he's just a bit mistaken about what these press release represented in terms of MS' sales. It wasn't a preview, it was the announcement.

No, that there was still a ton of hours left in the day. But as per MS PR they said they sold all they shipped so there are technically none left to buy. Sony was a bit smarter focusing on NA first instead of spreading thinner. MS is in a no win PR position besides stating what they stated. They can't beat PS4 in NA and they can't claim victory anywhere else because the opposing team hasn't even showed up to the game yet.
 
Nice healthy launches. I hope both companies can get into a groove where they move a nice amount of units going forward. Also, wtf at the last few pages.
 
I wonder what this means for their sales in the UK. If Amazon is any indicator, they seem to be way behind Sony in the UK but neck to neck in the US.

I feel like tey're going to get destroyed in those British isles this gen.

That's exactly what many are trying to say, that 1 million is the number MS come up with after doing analysis and market research.
 
Good number, and it shows in my neck of the woods. I tried finding one at Wal Mart, Target, Best Buy, even Kmart.. everyone told me they were completely sold out.

This thread was created at 4:55 PM PST. I'm pretty positive that a decent number in NA bought an Xbox One after that period today.

All I'm saying is that wouldn't it be better to wait for a full breakdown of sales in each territory before making conclusions about day one NA sales?; especially since the news was created a decent number of hours before the the first full day of the Xbox One's life in North America?

And the vast majority of those sold after were already counted by Microsoft via preorders. They don't have enough left in the supply chain to significantly increase that number for their PR. How does any adult not understand this?

You'll have to ask Microsoft why they schedule their PR in such a way. Again, most companies release sales PR late in the day, similar to how companies release their earnings reports either before or after market hours, not during. NPD releases after market, etc.

But again, I don't know what you're arguing here. Microsoft knows their sales precisely. They're not on the phone with every mom-n-pop getting updated tallies, they know they presold the majority and walk-ins will take care of the rest. Shipped = sold. If not, they have a problem.

Is it really about the comparison to PS4? It's ridiculously unimportant. It's a shipping battle. If Microsoft thought they won that battle in North America, believe me, they would have reported it. But regardless, it says nothing about demand. Repeat it: it says nothing about demand. It says nothing about which system is more desired. The numbers are absolutely supply constrained. Do you or do you not agree? And if that's the case, what's the point in arguing about it?

It's the same logic movie studios employ when they announce their weekend box office grosses on Sunday even though Sunday hasn't ended yet and there are still screenings later that evening.
 
Let's be real with ourselves for a minute though. A lot of past systems would have sold a million units if they had the supply. PS2, 360, Wii, etc all could have sold 1mil+ but there weren't enough out there.

It really means nothing for the long run health of either console or the market as a whole.

The console warriors are dressed in full battle regalia right now. It's how they help their side win I guess. But I agree, strong launches for new consoles is a good thing. I'm happy to see things going so well.

This all stemmed from people saying that this news isn't good for MS at all. All I stated was how isn't this news good especially if the people who say it isn't don't fully know all of the details for NA.

That then went into a back and forth about "24 hour period", etc. I can admit to being wrong in my points dealing with that but the overall reason I made posts in this thread is due to me being happy to see these two next gen consoles doing solidly at launch.

Was never trying to make any console war, "one side is better than the other", PS4 vs. Xbox One arguments.
 
Here's my theory on why Microsoft released this statement so early......PR. If you hear on the news the Xbox sold 1 million, it would get your attention and going by some peoples posts, getting one is possible if you look in the right places.

Oh he thinks walks-ins are going to make significant difference in sales 20 hours after launch? That pretty ridiculous, probably 99% of units sold were from preorders, maybe 10k-20k walk-ins got lucky, there's going to be be hardly anybody that wants an Xbox and waits until 9pm the following night to try and get one.

It's not a bad news per-say, but it's also not what anyone expected.

Most was expecting MS to tout a larger number, in some shape or form. A tie with Sony on PR is not exactly flattering.

Again, this only matters when viewed from a comparison perspective. Both companies have a good start, only one is better than the other. Now it's a question of momentum.

I don't know why people are arguing over specific numbers. There was never any doubt that both companies would pretty much sell out initially. The real question is what happens AFTER November.

Are you sure about those expectations? Everything I've heard was that Sony had an early manufacturing advantage. I seem to recall that Pachter weeks ago was saying he was told (or expected, not sure) shipments to be about 1.5 million for Sony and 1 million for Microsoft, and for the early Sony shipments to be shifted heavily to North America.

I don't know how anyone comes away disappointed in any way with any figure touted by Sony or Microsoft. They shipped a lot of systems, and have sold them all (or enough so that stragglers don't matter).

I didn't paint is as good or bad news. I simply stated that Microsoft's numbers in all likelihood weren't as good as Sony's. It is a separate discussion how much it matters to the success of a console if it's numbers are less than its competition. It is not a zero sum game. The XB1 could sell less than the PS4 yet still be considered successful.

As of this instant I don't think the sales numbers adversely affect the XB1. However next week's numbers could be interesting. If Sony ends up vastly outselling the XB1 with the second phase of its launch, then the question has to be asked why couldn't MS do the same. At that point you'd have to wonder if there were yield problems or an initial lack of demand for the XB1, such that MS couldn't or wouldn't make more of them.
 
Nice start. I think everyone realizes by this point that the XB1 is not going to outsell PS4 in the short term, and to even remain competitive sales wise they are going to need to produce some amazing content over the next couple of years.

The good news is that I think that Sony can beat their ass, and MS can still do as well as they did with 360. Console wars aside, this is a great start, and at the very least MS seems to have a healthy console on their hands.

And just to add my experience in Dallas TX day one. The XB1 was sold out at the nearest GameStop and Best Buy. Meaningless overall I know. Just my limited retail musings.

the same could be done for the ps4, its a matter of stores holding back some stock for walk ins.

the demand is higher than the ps4, at least in my area here in Canada but it might be due to less units being available at launch. i sold my xbox easily for $800. I still cant move the ps4.
 
I'm not going to pretend to know level of demand for these machines beyond everyone wants one, but only that my store (Best Buy) sold out of PS4 and Xbone day 1.

The key difference though was we had 120+ PS4s to 60+ XBOs.

I think MS should have launched all out in NA first as opposed to trying to do this worldwide launch if they had the capacity and logistics to ship out a million units, it's their strongest territory.
