I don't want to say DoA

But DoA

"Why is the Switch 2 not more powerful???"

This is why. Cram power into a portable console and the price skyrockets. It's cool for it to exist and I don't think XBOX is expecting it to sell tens of millions of it anyway but that is pretty damn expensive.

if these handhelds cost this much, how much will the nexgen consoles cost?

less. because these handhelds aren't subsidised. even tho they have a partnership with Microsoft here, Asus still has to make back the R&D and sell the system at a price that gives them a decen margin to do so and make a profit.

a console doesn't have to do this. those can be sold as a loss or with 0 profit margins because accessories, game licenses and online subscriptions are the money makers.

if the Switch 2 wasn't a console, but a PC handheld made by Asus, HP, Ayaneo etc., it would probably cost 600€ at a minimum, with the potential for more than that.

This is wrong. The next xbox are going to be over $1k.

Switch 2 is being subsidized. This is not and it is an open platform so you can do whatever you want with it. It is really the same console vs PC argument all over again except in the handheld format.

The great equalizer between console and PC with handhelds, however, is both are limited by battery constraints.

I don't think the Switch 2 is subsidized. after all they making profit from that system alone.

from my understanding a subsidized system is where a company sells at cost or slightly below cost in favor of gaining profit somewhere else. Nintendo is making a profit on everything.

Maybe subsidized isn't the right word for Switch and PS5 where a small profit is made, but they are able to keep the price down because of the closed ecosystem. From my understanding, that's subsidized. If there is a better word for it then someone correct me.

"Subsidized" is not at all the right word here, since that is not what they are doing. The price is not "down", they are running a profit on every unit sold, that is why the price is high.

Its a PC handheld? Are you suggesting there isn't a market for them anymore?
There is a market but it's a very niche market and this is a $900-1000 USD device within that niche market.

People act like these handheld gaming PCs are this mass market popular device. The entire market has only sold around 6M units since 2022 (as of 2/2025) and 4M of those were the Steam Deck so that leaves like 2M units devised between ALL of the other devices of which there are a lot. None of these sell very well.

Combine that with the fact that the Xbox brand has been hemorrhaging for years and it's not like this is going to be this super high seller.

Unless some new technology shows up in the next few years, I expect people to have sticker shock with the next gen consoles.
The only difference with consoles is that Sony/Nintendo will still make money off of money and accessories while somebody like ASUS has nothing to fall back on besides the sale of the unit itself.

people need to realize that not only is the market for an expensive handheld VERY niche, but there are also competitors in the same space like the lenovo legion go and msi claw, so MS is fighting for a piece of a very small pie. Most people who want portable gaming are just going to get a steamdeck or switch 2, both of which are less expensive. Better yet, they'll just play on their phones when more and more games are getting mobile ports.

tbh, asus is laughing all the way to bank that MS is dumb enough to pay them for a product that isn't a mass mover.

Switch 2 will eat this alive. Switch 2 will be the goat in this gen and next gen.
This isn't supposed to compete with the Switch 2 you lunatic.

Im aware of all that. The poster I was replying to claimed it was "DOA"

Actually I half expect to see that in order to launch Steam, We will need to exit out of the new gaming mode and into the full windows mode complete with extra memory requirements and desktop.
Steam games might actually run worse because of this.

Prove me wrong Microsoft. Got any of them hands on benchmarks before release day?
Going by Xbox App Insider version, which has the full screen mode and adds Steam games, Steam games start up Steam in the back and launch the games.

It works… But there is no game info shown at all, I can show pics if you want. There isn't even a description of the game when you click on a Steam game. You have a link to Steam instead, then you press Xbox+Start (Alt+Tab) to go back. Makes the whole thing feel janky imo.

Also, the library art on everything from Steam is extremely low res and sometimes wrong, like Elden Ring's art is that anti-cheat blue bear logo.

It's frustrating tbh. The big social media personas just show that you can start PlayStation games through Xbox App now, feeding on platform war engagement, while completely ignoring all the things that needs to be updated. And the few that add criticism are exaggerating it from Xbox/Microsoft/Windows hate. There is nobody with a genuine interest that talk about it normally.

Don't see why people are surprised, this is the future of Xbox hardware. Not a platform anymore but just a hardware option, an expensive/niche but also profitable possibility to play their games.
No one expects these devices to sell millions units for years.

I am going to wait to see performance increases over the current ROG Ally Z1 Extreme before I get too excited. So far, I am not impressed. I am not sure from what we have seen so far of the Z2 it would warrant a ~$500 price over the current Z1 Extreme systems on the market. Maybe there is some secret sauce baked into the "new" Windows OS?

The Z2 Extreme needed to be able to utilize FSR4.

A better question is "would anyone shit on this if it didn't have an Xbox sticker on it?"

It would just be another hand held PC I guess. I don't seem like much of an upgrade over my current ally X so ASUS probably wouldn't have built it if it wasn't for Xbox involvement. That's why it exists after all. For now it has the advantage over other hand held PCs because it can play wherever they play plus Xbox/gamepass. But that won't be the case when other manufactures use that OS on their handhelds. They will all be Xbox's In that sense, I guess. Just choose your spec/ price.

I like the idea of it, but they could just give me the OS on my current ally and it would basically be a an ally Xbox anyway. So I'll wait for the OS the become available. For anybody else, the idea of a handheld Xbox that can play your steam library will be appealing, for sure. I'll be more impressed when I see that OS on the next Xbox.

I'm still holding off for them to allow this OS to run on my current ally X. Will be interesting when they let MSi, Lenovo etc.

For now I'm sticking with my ally X. But sure at some point I'll replace it with a second gen ally X whenever that comes along in a couple years…. Presumably. I like the grips and the dedicated Xbox tan button. But that's not enough reason to really go fork out the cash for one as an ally X owner. The Z2 chip is phonation be better in real world performance but I don't think it's gonna be so much so that I'll feel like it's a must to upgrade over my current ally X. I use it really for retro games on steam. I save the more demanding games for my PC or my Xbox. But I look forward to some kind of OS update for my current ally X that will allow me to play my Xbox games on it. Shame it's gonna be limited to the play anywhere stuff. I could see myself playing my Xbox 360 version of radiant silver gun or guardian heroes , or one of many ACA neo geo games on m my current ally X. Or a future iteration of the Xbox ally X. Just a damn shame it's limited to play anywhere titles. But maybe by the time the next Xbox comes around they will have figured something out as far as those of us with large digital backlogs/libraries of games.

I'd imagine it's the same for most ' high end' handhelds. A steam deck is 750 roughly off Amazon right now….an ally X can cost you anywhere from 900-1000. Lower end model is 600. Then there's the others.steam deck, MSI , Lenovo go… All above 5/600 bucks . Then there is the switch2. Less powerful. But will have its own exclusives but won't play multiformat games at the same level as the other hand helds. They will all find their audience.

But ally X covering Xbox and steam is certainly a good selling point. Atleast until the OS is available to the other vendors/manufacturers.
