Noted leaker claims to know the Xbox Ally Release date and price (Ally: $499. Ally X: $799. Preorder in August, release in October)

The Rog Xbox Ally X with the new AI Z2 extreme at $799 sounds wishful.

Unless MS is actually absorbing some of the cost to get their new OS out on a powerful handheld asap.
They are just selling the license to Asus to use right? Don't think the relationship is that deep.

Can't imagine they would want to subsidise anything in HW anymore especially so soon after leaving the console market with their tail between their legs.

900 euros

Goodfellas GIF
What's the big deal? They don't want to devalue the brand with cheap devices.

I agree, from the outside it doesn't really make any sense. But if the $799 price for the X turns out to be correct I can't think of any other plausible scenario.

These Xbox PCs will play games from all platforms and look like consoles. This is the future
this doesn't do anything new that the OG ROG Ally and the Steam Deck don't already do and for that matter it doesn't even do what you're describing…

but you're a neo account that joined a year & half ago yet has somehow only ever posted in this thread so yeah

Who recently got banned? LittleChicken, is that you?

Nah, Windows handhelds are too niche to compete with Valve's Steam Deck. I do hope the user experience is exceptional. That would make me consider getting one when I upgrade.
It seems like a lot of people want to upgrade to this, even PC users, I read this in many places. Since it will probably have a console user interface with a console experience, this product category will appeal to a lot of Xbox owners as well. Interesting.

I don't know about all of that. It's good that Xbox is updating the UI experience, but the verdict is still out on whether the updated UI matches the Steam Deck. I don't think they'll nail it completely with 1.0.

Ally is basically a Steam Deck, but 100$ more expensive. DoA
Except it's more powerful with a 1080p screen aaaand with actual controller grips and it's running on Windows with more storefronts? Not seeing the downside. They're also focusing long-term on migrating Xbox console games over and so this whole thing will be integrated and no more stuff being locked to PC or locked to console. So once the emulation/ migration happens I'm down for the Xbox Ally.

Jokes aside. I think they will. Remember that the Xbox Team is working on the OS and they have over 20 years of console experience.

Slightly more powerful. The screen is a bit of an overkill if it aims 720p gaming as said in some hands-on videos. And not really sure if having Windows is better for now, we'll yet have to see how they implemented it.

And what do you mean by "actual controller grips" ? The Steam deck has grips as well.

They really have no excuse not to. They're building on top of their own operating system, which has been their baby for like 45 years, combined with their Xbox UI development, which has been around for like 25 years.

There's really no excuses; it has to be absolutely excellent from day one. I don't think anyone's going to cut them any slack on this one, nor should they.

It's Microsoft. It's always "yeah but we'll fix it later" and/or "we thought it was okay from our internal tests"

Aren't those handhelds primarily used for indie games? Why overpay if the Switch 2 does the same for half the price?

AAA games can be played on them as well. If all you play is A or AA then Steam Deck is the better, cheaper choice if you want to play PC games.

It's like a Series controller pulled apart with a screen put in the middle.

Why play AAA games on a weak handheld with a melting battery?

Not the best experience I wouldn't think. Just saying it is doable. I play mostly indies and emulated games on my Rog Ally X. If I'm playing AAA then I want a bigger screen.

I have faith in them but we can judge it when it's in our hands. It's the most interesting PC handheld to hit the market since the OG Steam Deck imo.

799 is not a bad price for Z2 Extreme with 24gb RAM, I think - especially at launch.
Only thing is that it doesn't have OLED. If they make OLED model, and other makers will make something with OLED panel, I may consider getting one.
(and dual boot with Steam OS, if possible)

Not sure. The Switch2 is significantly clocked down in handheld mode and only has 2mb L2 and 4mb L3 cache, while the Xbox Ally has 8mb L2 and 8mb L3 cache, plus more RAM.
And still looks better than a Series S.

That's Chad Nintencock right there for you.

Switch 2 "decisively" outperforms Steam Deck which is only slightly less powerful than the Z2 A. Switch 2 also benefits from DLSS. But it really doesn't matter as, for the most part, folks won't be playing the same games on Switch 2 as they will on Rog Ally

Since I already have a ROG Ally X I won´t be getting this but I am curious about the UI. If MS releases it for regular Ally I´ll definitely install it. A console like experience with sleep function and snappy UI with Windows 11 conveniently hidden in the background would be the best of both worlds. MS also said the UI was designed with controllers in mind so it should be easier to dock the Ally to a tv and play there. As it is now I only dock it to a monitor at my desk where I have a keyboard and mouse because navigating Windows 11 on a big screen tv is pretty much impossible.
