Aksys bringing Langrisser Re:Incarnation Tensei (3DS) to NA in Spring 2016

I saw some videos of the old Langrisser games and they looked pretty fun. It's a shame that the newer ones I can actually get look so lackluster or creepy. Guess that's just an unfortunate side effect of the state of the Japanese game industry.
Anyone with slightest interest in this would be better off grabbing Growlanser from PSN. I assure you, that game is the antithesis of lackluster.

Growlanser doesn't really play like Langrisser though. Frankly I loved Langrisser and could never get into Growlanser.

:/

Game looks terrible, but I still want.

Why... Aksys, just bring more otome titles and secure a relationship with Prototype for more visual novels. MocoMoco Friends, Aegis of Earth: Protonovus Assault and now this? I can't help but think they must be dirt cheap licenses, or else that they'll be making the company lose money at some point.

That was why I was initially interested. I played Growlanser IV and really dug it, and if I'm not wrong don't the old Langrisser games share some similar elements, as well as character designs?

Aksys developed Magus. I think they must just make tonnes of money of ASW games and do whatever they want for all the other games.

(Tbh, I can't imagine the otome titles make them a lot of money - loads of text and tiny market to sell to).

Hey, I just mentioned otome titles because it seems to be working for them, since they keep bringing them
and because I love them.

Here's what I don't get: ASW/Aksys has had a tight relationship with the owners of the old Technos IP for years and now owns those IP outright, yet Aksys hasn't brought over any of the six thousand Kunio-kun 3DS games, not even as eShop games. Why not? Like, they think Kunio-kun's not worth the risk but they're willing to bring over fuckin' Moco Moco Friends or whatever?

Oh god. I loved Der Langrisser but what the hell have they done with the series?!

The team that made the original games is long gone, they've been at Atlus for a while now.

Stella Glow is pretty decent based on the demo, and the graphic kinda reminds me of Jeanne D'Arc.
*looks up on Google* Oh. :(

Why can't I have new SRPGS without fanservice? I'll kinda look the other way for my beloved Fire Emblem, but beyond that...

Hey, moco moco is nice looking game there. I need that one to do well to alllow us get other cutey game for 3ds.

This, so much. I hate that cheap pandering has hijacked the genre outside of Code Name STEAM.

Looks like hot garbage, but I'm glad they're localizing it anyway. The less games that stay in Japan the better.

Never be glad that a publisher is localizing shit. It's time better spent on good games.

Aksys probably have the most hit/miss taste of any publisher ever. They'll do phenomenal titles, then absolute garbage.

Yeah, if they believe it's worth the time and effort to localize this, might as well localize something that actually will sell.
This might sell okayish numbers, actually, since people might think it's similar to Fire Emblem.

Warsong (the English version of the first Langrisser) was the first SRPG I ever played. I got it back in 1991, I fell in love with the series and the genre, and I've been in love ever since.

This game looks atrocious and I want nothing to do with it.

Speaking generally, there aren't a whole lot of 3DS games for a publisher like Aksys to bring over that aren't tied up with other publishers. I'm sure they're only publishing this because they need to publish something and hey, it might suck but it still says Langrisser on the box.

It won't do well because they're not promoting it at all and haven't made any effort to make people care about it, and they're releasing right around the same time a similar, much bigger game.

I didn't think anyone would ever touch this, I'm impressed.
They better step up their "It's like Fire Emblem!" marketing game and never show any screenshots.

It already had more promotion than aksys other otome game ever had though.

As far as games that will sell, Aksys has only ever really had the Blazblue/Guilty Gear fighters and then the surprise success they stumbled into with 999, and the series that ended up developing into. Other than that everything they publish is very low-profile, about as low-profile as localization companies get. Outside of Zero Escape 3, they haven't seemed to do any notable promotion for any of their releases in a long time.

Which is all to say that I'm not too surprised they're grabbing and dumping this "Langrisser" thing. Probably will be forgotten about as quickly and completely as Mimana Iyar Chronicle was.

Taking a closer look at the Gematsu article, I have to wonder if whatever Aksys employee wrote that this is a "triumphant return" of the franchise felt embarassed for having to write that. Also, dang, does the game really not use the bottom 3DS screen at all? How lazy can you get?

I don't get that impression, comparing MocoMoco Friends just got a thirty seconds trailer where they have two trailers for each otome, one announcement trailer and one release trailer.

Tokyo Twilight was probably the last genuinely great game they did that wasn't one of their big guns, and it went waaaay under the radar. Could've put all that money into CCC instead.

Come on Aksys...I love you guys but... this? :/

I mean, I'll probably buy it a few months after release if the price falls.

Aksys' game announcements always seem to be black and white. It's either "YES HOLY SHIT FINALLY I CAN'T WAIT" or "really this?"

To keep this discussion from coming off like an Aksys dogpile: if you were in the position of a small publisher like Aksys and you had to settle on a 3DS game to localise, taking into account that damn near everything is tied up with other publishers or otherwise off-limits, what would you pick? What could you pick?

Tokyo Twilight had a bad reception, or at least that's been my impression. Code:Realize is probably better.

I mean, if this is a game Aksys felt forced to pick up to keep giving themselves work, I'm not going to blame them for that.

But looking at currently Japan-exclusive 3DS games, one game I'd really like to see come here is Touch Detective 3. Atlus did the first two Touch Detective games on DS, but if they don't have any interest in handling this new entry, might as well have another company such as Aksys do it.

It's a tough sell. The combat is unlike anything else, and very unintuitive, but it had great visuals and a solid plot.

Rather than a game that was reviled as garbage? Nothing. It's not worth the damage to reputation. Aksys aren't Atlus, they don't have that much good will.

Zoo Keeper 3D obviously.

Yeah, they've always kind of been like that. There are some exceptions, they marketed the hell out of Agarest, for example. But I think that really backfired for them. The first one seemed to have sold pretty well (it had that legendary limited edition on Xbox) but the game itself was incredibly dull and I think they ended up hurting their reputation with both the people who bought the game and also the people who were turned off by the marketing of the game.

But they also seem to have found some success with Bit Trip and Hakuoki, though, and seem to be focusing mostly on visual novels lately so they must be doing well for them too.

Really? Everything, and I mean everything, I've read about this game has indicated that it's terrible. It's not just that people hate it either, the complaints all sound legitimate. Also, I'm not one to demand Urushihara or nothing, but I really hate the character designs.

It's sad really. All those great Langrisser games were passed over for localization and then we get what appears to be nothing more than a cheap cash-in on the Langrisser name. At least Langrisser IV got a fan translation, I suppose.

Again, this makes me wonder: why haven't they localised any of the Kunio-kun 3DS games? They clearly see the value in the IP as they've been consistently re-releasing the older games on Virtual Console.

Where did it get a bad reception? It's a solid game, and the GAF thread at least liked it.

Most reviews of it were either mixed or scathing, with very few positive ones to speak of. I personally didn't enjoy it (gave it a 3.5 in my own) and found it was a frustrating fog of war-filled campaign with some lovely art assets buried under a dreadfully dull script. Also, the horrible, stereotypical portrayal of the only gay characters.

On this game... yeah, I think i'll stick to Fire Emblem and hoping we get another Valkyria Chronicles game. That, or another Tactics Ogre.
