Aksys bringing Langrisser Re:Incarnation Tensei (3DS) to NA in Spring 2016

Most reviews of it were either mixed or scathing, with very few positive ones to speak of. I personally didn't enjoy it (gave it a 3.5 in my own) and found it was a frustrating fog of war-filled campaign with some lovely art assets buried under a dreadfully dull script. Also, the horrible, stereotypical portrayal of the only gay characters.

Funny, as popular as P4D was, no one seemed to point out that equally awful stereotype.

Zoo Keeper 3D obviously.

Class of Heroes 3D is also one of the only ones other than that (glad I'm not the only one who remembers Zoo Keeper 3D :) ).

Oh and Kenka Bancho 6.

Yeah, I wasn't very fond of that in Dancing All Night either, especially how the game treated them like a joke, let lone the lack of coverage about it. "They're gay, that's the joke, isn't that funny?!"

*looks up on Google* Oh. :(

Why can't I have new SRPGS without fanservice? I'll kinda look the other way for my beloved Fire Emblem, but beyond that...

Actually, aside from that one character (which seems to be the focus for the market in japan even though she's the villain), the game seems fine enough.

It's more of a Tales/Atelier than Neptunia/Criminal Girls.

I don't get that impression, comparing MocoMoco Friends just got a thirty seconds trailer where they have two trailers for each otome, one announcement trailer and one release trailer.

Seeing siliconera and how aksys have mention that they are going to donate some of the profit from moco moco have given that game more spotlight than other otomebgame had ever had.

man what a negative reaction to a game's announcement. can't say it's unearned though. what i played was extremely slow and boring.

To keep this discussion from coming off like an Aksys dogpile: if you were in the position of a small publisher like Aksys and you had to settle on a 3DS game to localise, taking into account that damn near everything is tied up with other publishers or otherwise off-limits, what would you pick? What could you pick?

there are games that are out there. unfortunately a lot are on vita (it's a fine system but speaking in terms of business, it's not great), but if they wanted to just do visual novels there have been games in the last two years or so with really strong reviews. this seems like a play for the 3ds's strong rpg market without much else behind it (which seems to have been the idea for the game in japan too).

Here's a list of unlocalized 3DS games (and a few Wii U ones because):

7th Dragon III Code: VFD
Beyond the Labyrinth
Dai Gyakuten Saiban (The Great Ace Attorney)
Daigasso! Band Brothers P
Digimon World Re:Digitize Decode
Dragon Quest Monsters: Terry's Wonderland 3D
Dragon Quest Monsters 2: Iru and Luca's Marvelous Mysterious Key
Dragon Quest Monsters Joker 3
Dragon Quest VII
Dragon Quest VIII
Dragon Quest XI
Monster Hunter Stories
Monster Hunter X
Picross 3D 2
Puyo Puyo Tetris
Rhythm Tengoku The Best Plus
Shin Megami Tensei IV: Final
Slime MoriMori Dragon Quest 3
Theatrhythm Dragon Quest
Class of Heroes 3D
Zoo Keeper 3D
Puyo Puyo 20th Anniversary
Puyo Puyo Tetris
Tales of the World: Reve Unitia
Taiko series on both 3DS and Wii U
Yakuza 1&2 HD for Wii U
Medabots 7
Medabots 8
Medabots 9
Medabots Duel
Atelier Rorona 3DS
Kenka Bancho 6
Corpse Party 3DS
Elminage Gothic 3D Remix
Shin Elminage

It's true that there's not much at all not tied to a major publisher. Class of Heroes 3D and the Elminage games are really the only JRPGs in that that list. Kenka Bancho 6 would've also been a pretty high profile localization, and Aksys work with Spike Chunsoft anyway on Zero Escape, so... yeah, WHY?! :(

Honestly, they might have been better off going for something on vita if it was the only other choice. I can't see this doing well.

there's more. stuff like time travelers, beyond the labyrinth, and a couple other games that are tied to other properties (anime games are hard, but for example they might have tried with detective conan visual novels/puzzle games, which spike chunsoft developed).

that's if they wanted the 3ds market though. like i said it's not easy, and i imagine some doors are closed at this point. this seems like a desperation move for a company that didn't really need to make one.

outside of 3ds some visual novels they could have considered also could have been put on steam. i have this feeling that aksys either lacks the ability to put them on steam, or they see themselves as a dedicated hardware company first and foremost.

Time Travelers is never coming over; someone from one of the western publishers implied there was behind-the-scenes bullshit that meant no-one wanted to touch it.

would prefer kenka bancho 6 over this by far

i was interested when it was first announced and i saw the decent sprites and artwork but the gif and review put me off

Full priced visual novels on Steam are still an incredibly niche market, nothing more than $10 has sold more than a few thousand copies. It's not some golden goose despite what some would have you think.

Is it in terms of niche RPGs really worse than the 3DS in the west?

Vita has acquired a niche fanbase that buy a lot of games within that niche, so if your games are explicitly catered to that audience you'll do fine. Install base doesn't mean jack if those people aren't already switched on and if you suck at marketing.

Uhh...what kind of bullshit? Level 5 games always stuck in localization hell for some reason.

If you're talking about this tweet from when Scott worked as a project manager at Level 5, he's most likely referring to how abysmally the game bombed in Japan, not some behind-the-scenes thing.

That could be it.

That sucks. I remember looking forward to the Vita version hopefully getting translated back when that game was announced...

I like how everyone is jumping the gun on calling the game "hot garbage" over a gif - I'm pretty sure it's not the best game ever, and not even a mediocre one, but it might still be enjoyable, and probably not a lot worse than plenty of other Japanese localized games. For me, at least, the more tRPG, the better - it's not a popular genre nowadays on dedicate devices. The 1st hour gameplay doesn't look that bad, at most boring and really low-budget.

generally, yeah. the 3ds userbase is about 6 times the size and there's been more established franchises to lead the way and diversify the audience. plus, the system will be in stock at major retailers through 2016, which is a big feather in the 3ds's cap.

the problem is that it's super super super slow. i really wish the game was better, and maybe if it does well, it'll inspire more to try their hand at a game like this, but i don't think it was a good one to try and bring over.

I posted a thread not too long ago asking for opinions from people who'd actually played that game and it was 90% people scoffing at that one gif.

I don't remember but that may have been what I saw reported, yeah.

But this game has been out for well over a year and is never EVER going to get localized.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BjLHm85jRB4 (warning: streamer commentary)

This game is absolutely coming over; it's being self-published by Ancient and while I don't want to speak out of turn, I believe they're debugging it right now. It's taking forever because everything they've done with this game has taken forever--the release was delayed, the DLC was delayed, the bugfixes were delayed, etc--but rest assured, it will be released in English.

Oh? Well then. That changes everything.
I hope you don't get any trouble for posting this, but I really appreciate the info.

Around the same time as Fire Emblem Fates...good luck.

I had heard Langrisser was the precursor to Growlanser? Gotta say this doesn't look like it.

Langrisser was the series Career Soft made before Growlanser. As you might expect coming from the same developer, there are a number of similarities between the two. That having been said, Career Soft was deliberately trying to do something different with Growlanser and not just make a spiritual sequel to Langrisser, so there's also a lot of differences. Langrisser is a straight up SRPG, while Growlanser is more of an RPG/SRPG hybrid.

Of course, Career Soft hasn't had anything to do with Langrisser for over 15 years now. It seems that Extreme, who currently holds the IP, will license it out to pretty much anyone who is willing to pay the asking price. Combined with Langrisser being a reasonably popular series in its heyday, the result is that there have now been a number of new Langrisser projects but they're all cheap cash-ins or vaporware.

To make a long story short, there's not really much of a connection between this game and Growlanser.

why the fuck is it so hard to get good SRPGs these days :/

Summon Night 6 looks really good, at least.

Sad that we get a new Langrisser in the states for the first time since Warsong, and it turns out to be this one :P What I've played of Langrisser 4 is wonderful, and I appreciate the 'large scale battle' SRPGs that are pretty unique to the Langrisser series.
