Batman AK PC Perf Thread of DARKNESS, NO SETTINGS [30fps cap / intro removal in OP]

I think I got my crashing problems fixed, even recorded a video to show how it performs on my system. I think recording caused performance dips though, as the FPS dropped as low as 24 for a split second once, when it never dropped below 30 when I wasn't recording and had the FPS indicator up.

Okay there seems to be a lot going on here.

I manged to test the game on my buddies new rig here are my impression after about 2h with the game.

The specs are:

MSI GTX 980 Gaming 4G
Intel Xeon E3-1231 v3, 4x 3.40GHz
2x Crucial Ballistix DDR3-1600
MSI H97 PC-Mate
Crucial MX100 256GB SSD
running on Win 8.1

The game ran with everything maxed out ( which means only normal quality for the textures) and GamewWorks on and the frame rate uncapped.

Over all the game runs and there is no obvious visual glitches for what I could find during normal game play. Sometimes Batman would slide or punch through a goon or just hit the air.
The FPS frequently tanks when fighting, driving or grappling around... aka. the core gameplay.
There would be random freezes often when transitioning between areas or getting close to things that could load in. They last for about 1 second sometimes 2 and seem to be occurring when the game cashes something into the VRAM I would assume. Note this is just a pure speculative assumption by me and is based only on my impression. The reason I came to believe this is the first Riddler race. After you finish the regular part and spawn in front of the barrier. If you do doughnuts or manually turn around the car in a circle there will be a spot where it fell keep doing those freezes. Entering the virtual challenge ( thus loading it ) and driving up too the barrier again made it stop.

The rest of the game run around 45 FPS on average. With 60 FPS when standing still and just looking around and below 40 when grappling very fast ( after the suit upgrade it first got a bit better then worse) and fighting. It is certainly playable and looks gorgeous but changing the setting did little to no impact on the average FPS which is really not good. If you are used to 30 FPS it won't be a big deal if you are used to 60FPS it will be annoying to no end. At 30 FPS locked a lot of the smaller animations ( like gadget belt moving ) seem to be gone. I am not sure if it was just me or what the cause is.

Aside from there there where no technically difficulties like crashes or anything and he also didn't have any issues with the ~4h he had put into the game before.

Unrelated to that we should probably do a collection of what we know o far about issues an such.

This gets Rocksteady a +2 in my book. But sadly it has to be connected through USB, bluetooth defaults to Xbox prompts.

Except it doesn't work natively.

It shows PS button prompts in game but if you plug a DDS4 in via USB it just charges without something like DS4windows running.

The game clearly has performance issues. But the game is also doing some shit that where hitches in fps is justified. There are screen-space reflections all over the place. I'd like for them to push even further and add HBAO+ to the game knocking fps even further down. But the game would look a step ahead of everything else out there.
We'll have to respectfully agree to disagree here. Everything you wrote past the highlighted is inconsequential, IMO. What the game "would" look like with further added effects means very little to anyone that can't even get a stable framerate with a 30fps lock tha the game released with!

On one hand you're saying the game has performance issues and then on the other you're asking to layer more effects because "its what gamers want" without taking into account that they might want to....you know.....fix the current state of the game?

I'm sorry, there's nothing on display in this game that would necessitate a lock down to 30fps. Much less when we just had a comparable and far larger in scope open world experience in the Witcher 3 that demolishes this game performance wise.

...and its fundamentally running Unreal Engine 3 for god sakes!

I saw that my download was done this morning and, like a fool, verified the files to make sure it all installed OK. Shit. How does a problem like this occur? Deleting a 33gb game and forcing players to redownload is not a small issue, especially for those with bandwidth caps.

Guess I won't be playing for another day. At least there are suggestions that the game will run better as a result, plus there could even be a nice, panicked emergency patch ready by then.

I think reviews have been disabled on Steam. A friend said so 30 minutes ago.

The ability to post a review was disabled for a while but is now back. I suspect the massive wave of negative reviews triggered something.

How about using a host that doesn't decimate IQ?

As long as you have "upload in high quality" checked, IMGUR doesn't "decimate" IQ

The game's film grain and CA is doing a better job at killing the IQ than IMGUR is....

Not getting my hopes up with a GTX 680 2GB but the game won't even finish downloading. Had it fully preloaded yesterday and today it's stuck at 96% with nothing happening. Judging by this thread and the reviews it doesn't look like I'm missing out on much atm though :7.

Anyone else having an issue where the framerate is capped at 31FPS....what a weird number to be capped at. :p

Happened to me but it fixed itself after I started messing around with the fps lock and 3rd party programs. No idea what's up with that.

30fps, 31 fps, game is full of microstutter either way.

Curious is there a higher setting than the "Normal" texture setting?

"Standard" and "Normal" sound the same lol..

This port.....

Witcher 3 has flat lighting though. And the number of reflections/lights on screen aren't anywhere near Batman AK (that means several more shader calls). Also there are people actually taking up a bunch of space in Batman AK whereas most people are scattered in W3's world. Batman AK already has the rain happening like W3, but each droplet is being lit by the local light source (again nothing like that in W3). Batman AK also seems to be using Parallax occlusion mapping on some of the walls and ground. Particle sparks light up like light sources and die fairly slowly. Water is doing a lot of animation and turbulence compared to the static slow moving water in W3. I could go on and on.

UE3.5 has nothing to do with being able to run the game faster. The more tech you add to any graphics engine, the more demanding the hardware.

Does it just always rain in the game?

It's set over the course of one night in the main plot, so I would say it makes sense. In my experience, it hasn't stopped yet.

My 970 has crashed twice while playing, and I get a somewhat steady 60 unless I'm driving or flying. That leads to awful stutter. Not happy, but I got this as a gift from a friend so I can't really return it. Hope there's a fix soon.

so i put the maxfps at 90 fps but it still goes over 100 sometimes and there is sudden stutter going down to 50fps. If it was 20 fps i would say ok but 50? how can it start to lag... Holy joker what have they done to this game?

btw. what about the new AMD Driver? does it help a little?

game is running quit well to be fair on my pc but every now and then there is this stutter and the sudden framedrop for like 2 seconds going down to 16 fps and back up to around 77fps...

I couldn't tell if the textures on the panels you rip off leading up to the chemical plant were supposed to be fully loaded either...

Ok so I did some testing.
I think the stuttering issues stem from some really wonky vram usage.

Loading the game up and immediately going into the benchmark yields the following results:

Min: 44 fps
Max: 101 fps
Avg: 70 fps
No stuttering.

While running this I noticed my vram usage starting at ~2gb, and then slowly filling up to about 3870MB.

After the test concludes however vram usage stays around 3gb even in the menu, and every time I run the test afterwards it runs a tiny bit worse.

Now the real change comes when I load something playable, the last part of Harley's segment in this case, which loads the vram back up to ~3400MB; runs fine, perfectly smooth.

Now when I go back to the benchmark it fills up to 3800MB really quickly, and from this point on it's a stutterfest just like the regular game, resulting in a Minimum fps of 10 (even though it completely freezes sometimes).

Massive vram memory leak?

It's quite unbelievable though that they had the balls to sell season pass for 40 bucks but didn't bother to let this game go through QA testing.

Interesting, thanks for testing and sharing this.

I'm verifying integrity of files.

To me this means there's actually 4.7k files where md5 doesnt match.

Lets wack steam content servers with my 300gigasuperpower fiber to see if rumor is right.

I will be back.

Edit: I'm saying the guy who went with the preload/final version conjecture was right, this explains why its redownloading.

Also, I bet my ass steam is the one who verifies integrity of files, not developper, so that means there's nothing wrong with the game in that respect and it's steam who's saying files are different.

After ignoring the benchmark tool, I went and played some more. I get 60 fps (vsync because of crappy monitor) during fights and stationary batmobile battles. Driving around has me float between 50 and 60 FPS, and when gliding from a high vantage point it drops to 45.

This is with a 980 Ti on a modest system.
