Batman v Superman Ultimate Edition rated R by the MPAA

The "Hollywood learns the wrong lessons" stuff is just a running gag I'm not in on, right guys? Y'all don't really think they threw together an R-rated cut and got it rated since Deadpool released... right?

Right?

Was thinking the same but it's likely a running gag. With some anyway. I hope.

You don't get to bring friends.
Movies are re-sent to the MPAA multiple times to get re-rated and re-edited to get the required rating. Since this is the director's cut, it would imply the previous cut sent to the MPAA was too much for a PG-13 rating and the toned down the violence just enough.

This, someone and others with some sense. MPAA are kinda random in what they decide is a hard R though. I recall that story where the South Park movie had to be resent many times with the last submission had more dirty jokes and that somehow got a pass

It amazing how Hollywood continues to miss the entire point of Superman's character.

Can we at least see what's on the home release before going into this? If it's anything like X2 (which got an R for it's first cut), there are probably a punch - likely from fucking Batman - that was a bit too much.

Looks to be a reactional move after Deadpool's success.

No it isn't. The theater version of the film is PG-13. It was done long before Deadpool released. Snyder's films usually get extended or uncut versions. The increase in rating for extended or uncut versions of films usually happens. The Hobbit trilogy was a recently example given in this very thread.

Right?

This is the same place that thinks DKR at 87 on RT is the worst movie ever released... I definitely wouldn't put it past some people.

Yeah, they rushed out a rated R version for the film board within 2 weeks of Deadpools release... they must've just used the Photoshop filter add blood and violence. Get real, this is a home video release of which was teased months ago.

Shit, Captain America was almost in an R-rated movie. These types of movies are treading a very fine line between PG-13 and R and I wouldn't read too much into it with regards to how they handle Superman.

...And that was a good Superman story instead of a claptrap that embodied everything that was wrong with comics in the early 90s?
And that's the only story of Superman that people remember.

That and All Star Superman.. oh wait another Superman story where he dies.

And again, there's a chance it's nothing Superman did. Batman could have been a bit too Arkham in that warehouse fight and broke the shit out of someone's arm.

It was an awful story. But its old and violent and features Superman. Some of these things should have been rated R a long time ago.

I wouldn't call it a 'good story', but Superman sacrificing everything and never giving up against a seemingly unstoppable force to save his friends, family and the world isn't exactly off the 'Superman embodiment' rails.

I love this. Least we know for sure we are getting a ultimate release edition on bluray, that is the real news here. Movies go in for ratings 2-3-4 times before their final rating, so of course it would be rated R at least once, the final trailer really showed off the violence batman dishes out and that was the reason for the rating, so that means they had to tone that down a bit.

I guess now that I'm way past the age of 17, that movie ratings no longer apply to me. It's border line descrimination after those fruitful years. I want to see a R rated anything just because it could be rated X and I could still see it.

I wouldn't mind seeing an R rated film like this because they don't hold back for trying to impress the kids. You can view all the core violence as it would happen.

All Star Superman did all that and more. Superman does NOT have to win fights just by punching shit.

I'll say it

I don't think Batman nor Superman should be anywhere close to an R... I mean comics should be for as many folks as possible.

It's one of the reasons I really dislike Frank Miller's work

It's a Rated R cut for home release though... the large majority of people will be only seeing the PG13 version because that's the version you'll see on Netflix and in theaters and in syndication.

the reason why it's rated R is probably because the knightmare batman scenes are probably more violent, and maybe Batman's fight sequences are more brutal.

Doubt Superman is the reason why it's rated R.

They're very likely to be selling a PG-13 version on DVD/Blu-Ray as well. So people will have options and the Ultimate Edition very likely will be priced higher as well.

Okay but Superman is the goddamn progenitor of wearing tights and solving problems by punching shit. It's 75 years too late to have a problem with that.

Shoot which reminds that the last Batman game Arkham Knight was hit with the M-rating for it's violence, which surprised me last year as none of the Batman games were ever M-rated and WB didn't change it.

Man, Batman is going to go ham consistently on fools if the last trailer is any indication; damn that was one hell of a beatdown!

Yeah, exactly. The market for this is super small and this isn't even promotional... someone found the MPAA rating release and it was found out in the most mundane way.

I'm surprised to see so many dumb "lol deadpool reaction" "hollywood learning wrong lesson" reactions lol.

Yeah. This is hardly reactionary to Deadpool's immediate success but maybe Warner caught wind of the traction Deadpool was gaining last year?

The home video release market is small... the special edition release will be even smaller.

I won't be surprised if it's because Doomsday gets absolutely wrecked. Maybe there's also some really violent stuff in that "Knightmare" sequence.

Also Bats just owning fools in that warehouse.

As far as "getting Superman" goes, there are few worse examples you could've picked than Death of Superman.

I disagree. The story sucked for various reasons but Superman didn't do anything unnecessarily edgy or outside of his character as a part of it. He was Superman from beginning to end.

Doubt it, Snyder has released a director's cut to all of his movies except MoS. It's what he does. This film finished shooting almost two years ago, he had plenty of time to make different cuts of the film. Probably settled with two cuts, one for theaters and the other for a blu-ray release.

Well, if we're gonna theorize the dream sequence is a contributor, Superman might do some pretty messed up shit there.

By flying into the sun, not getting into a punch up with generic villain #84.
And you should've realized while typing that out why Hollywood isn't interested in putting out a Blockbuster Superman movie where he gets sun cancer from flying too close to the sun.

It doesn't get people in theater seats. It's like making a Batman movie where he gets a heart condition and can't fight anymore so the entire movie is him talking and being emotional about it. It might make for a good story and drama but not a lucrative Blockbuster movie.

If this is right, it bodes well for an R-rated Suicide Squad and Batman solo. Bring it on!

No it doesn't. Both of those will still be PG-13 when it comes to the theater version. Depending on the director they might get extended editions. Then and only then maybe it gets increased to R for violence. People aren't going to be seeing R rated DC films in the theater. That's the hope people have and it's a false foolish hope.

Did WB, who was previously worried about Batman's box office performance
, just orchestrate it's own "leak" to reveal that an R rated version of it will be released after the regular version?

That Deadpool thirst is real...

Do director's cut typically get rated if they're only going to be on disc? Why not just have it unrated?

Because 'unrated' could literally mean anything. It could be as banal as "We added a sequence of someone eating a danish." Having an R rating is a clearer distinction between the two versions.
