i'm starting to dust off my memories of playing this nearly every day at lunch at my first job 10 years ago...

My strategy is apparently not working well because I haven't been able to win a game yet. I'm usually trying to either make people work for me when they lay down tiles or block their forward progress. I also don't seem to understand field scoring because Jonnyram has obliterated me there on a couple games now :)

When there's only 10 to 20 tiles left, you have only one dobber and can try to get onto a field or try to get a city built that you probably won't finish...which would you go for? The field scores 3 for a completed city, but you might be able to sneak a second guy onto someone's field if you are lucky with tiles and take over the points right? A city is pretty much guaranteed points even if it's not finish (especially if it has flags)

Also, if anyone wants to change what name shows up in GameCenter (ex. change your real name to your GC/user/GAF/whatever name), follow these steps:

  • Open Game Center
  • On the "Me" screen, click on your Account on the bottom of the page
  • View Account (enter password)
  • Scroll down to the "Game Center Identity" section (at the very bottom)
  • Tap "Edit Account Info" "Apple ID" -->
  • Here your First and Last Name appears, along with your Apple ID and PW. Simply change your First Name and Last Name to whatever you want. Note: This does NOT impact your Apple ID name at all. This is just for the Game Center name that appears on friends' lists.
  • Make sure to tap "Done" in the top-right (will have to do this twice), and you're finished!

Been slow on turns and because things have been so crazy I generally just have time in the evenings to take turns but anyone can still feel free to send me invites.

Nice... I'm like 15 points away from 1500 ELO but I see a big drop coming with the couple of games I have going. The ELO increases are so small at this level but the drops are so large :(

I was thinking the next ELO achievement was 1500 but I just looked and it is 1550. There are also ones for 1700, 1850, and 2000! Does anyone think these are pretty much impossible, especially with the NeoGAF level of competition? I looked at the Max ELO leaderboards and just getting near 1500 will put you in the top 100 out of 25000+ players. The top guy has 2010 ELO but #2 is 1720, #3 is 1665 so only one person has the 1850 and 2000 ELO achievements and two have the 1700 one. This is from online friend games, so more people may have the achievements by quick play or local AI play (which is probably the easiest way to get them).

Also, going with achievements, the game says there is 43 total but I only see 36 in my list. This means there are 7 hidden achievements… anyone know what they are or where to find a list of them?

No, that is a joke unless you cheese it. You literally could not lose once you got to 1600 and you'd gain only a handful of points even for beating 1300+ people.

I don't have Landlord and "I <3 Pixels" on my list so those ones are hidden.

The hidden one I have that you don't have is:

City Planner - Completed a valid 7 tile city in solitaire (15 pts)

That brings it to 38 of 43.

I think the ones in bold are hidden. I added a couple.

OK, looking at the list, there's probably ones for:

Winning without scoring a city? (Yes!)
Winning without scoring a cloister?
Occupied a road with X number of followers? (Yes!)
Occupied a city with X number of followers? (Yes!)

That would make 43...

I'll test out a few of these today against the AI. I need to play Frank anyways. I'll try the solitaire one too.

Edit: Cross "Winning without scoring a cloister" off the list. Just did that and didn't get anything.

Edit 2: The 7 tile road is a valid one. Goes as #39 and City Planner moves to #40:

Autobahn - Completed a valid 7 tile road in solitaire (15 pts)

One more achievement to add to the list (only 2 more to go!):

Patrician - Occupied a city with 4 followers (10 pts)

It fits in the list between Abbot and Landlord.

Brigand - Occupied a road with 3 followers (10 pts)
Nomad - Won without scoring a city (15 pts)

Brigand fits in the list between Abbot and Patrician and Nomad is between Duelist and Wanderlust (Industrialist is after Wanderlust).

Nomad was tough to get but I did it against the Servant (easy AI). I tried against the Maid but she plays too many farms which made it tough to win. It took a few tries too but I got lucky with the cloisters and blocking his cities. I know I could have created a fake user to play against and did it that way but the challenge was fun.

Thanks AirBrian for the suggestions and updating the list.

I'm *really* sorry about how slow some of my turns have been - I'm on 3G data still and even then coverage is patchy. Hopefully I'm sorted out with my proper internet connection next week and normalcy returns (meaning, I'll still occasionally be slack).

Incidentally, v.2.32 of Carcassonne has reduced the no. of points needed for the solitaire "Meditation" achievement, from 900 to 750.

I finished a game a couple of hours ago, and my ELO was 1414 (+12), and I just finished one now and my ELO is now 1408 (+10)... what on earth is going on?

Usually that happens when another game has finished in between your last game and your latest game. When you view the ended game, the ELO adjusts correctly. It's happened to me a couple of times too -- it's just a timing thing.

And Darb, you've been added to the list.

I guess I lost 16 points in a game in between but that game wasn't in my list any more, so I'm confused. Have you had any similar issues?

This morning I was having trouble with the iPad where I could browse to websites but not connect to Gamecenter, it would bring up a dialog in Carc "Could not connect to GameCenter server" with Retry/Cancel...<kicks Apple in the butt> Sorry for delays in my moves

I think Apple are having a bunch of problems with their servers. I've been having trouble connecting to the App Store and stuff too.

Yup, I had updates get stuck in loading for like 3hrs earlier today, Even rebooting the iPad wouldn't kick them out.

I started up a head to head game with you. I figured out I suck at this game. Maybe I'll learn something playing a smaller game against a good opponent.

We should try to get a GAF tournament up. I had an ELO of 1400 for seven or eight seconds, before checking in on another game that had finished :(

I just quit 5 games where a member of this board hung up games for 5+ weeks, some 8. Cost myself 100 ELO in the process, but, they're off my board.
