Circana (NPD) September 2023: #1 Starfield #2 Mortal Kombat 1 #3 EA FC24; PS5 #1 Units + Revenue, XBS #2 Units + Revenue

Still in all, who fucking cares what they think?

Any Xbox nut who insists that Starfield would save Xbox, be a GOTG contender, or the meaning of life itself are just as ridiculous as the PS5 console warriors who are hell bent on tearing Starfield down and rooting for Xbox's demise.

In this instance, I'll allow it.

MS paid $7.5b for Zenimax, and this is the result after they've had 2 platform "exclusives" that were never intended to be.

There is no argument that this policy denied a good proportion of the console audience access to these games purely so they could leverage their business. If that policy isn't to your liking, rooting for its failure -while undoubtedly self-serving- is completely understandable and reasonable.

And before anyone chimes in by equivocating buying exclusivity on a per-game basis (often for a limited time) with snapping up entire publishers in order to control bushels of IP... Don't bother. It's not the same thing at all.

So Bethesda's biggest release in decades only slightly boosted the Xbox on its release month ?
We may finally be seeing the consequences of day-and-date PC releases. Less than 10% up from last year with what should be their biggest console exclusive in years when 2022 they released nothing is pretty shocking. MS have sacrificed console sales for software and service sales. Whether that is the correct business decision for them I have no idea.

Phil Spencer says Microsoft bought Bethesda to prevent Starfield being PlayStation-exclusive

Phil Spencer says Microsoft is competing with Google and Amazon, not Sony

Phil Spencer: "We have a better product than Sony has, not just on hardware but equally important on the software platform and services on top of the hardware. We have the ingredients of a winning plan."

Microsoft's Bethesda deal is a $7.5 billion part of its plan to crush Sony

Great numbers for Starfield and also Xbox! The console rose single digits when everybody else fell. Also, PS5 had a US$ 50 discount and Spider Man Bundle.

Starfield already 7 year to date is impressive, also considering that many is playing with gamepass!

Congratulations Bethesda!

Fuckin whiplash around this place sometimes, stumble into thread where pc is apparently niche, couple of days later pc is why some game hit #1 and top it off now windows pc is not a microsoft platform after old mate paintr has been going on a rant for months about microsofts monopoly of gaming on pc because of windows and directx.

Have a meeting guys, all get on the same page, coordinate the offensives your just all doing a great putin impersonation.

I, especially, liked the part where sales of a game that is available on Steam, do not count towards its monthly sales.

because .. reasons.

If you can correct me... but where does it say that that 2% corresponds to Gamepass only?

There are many subscription services and among others PS+ increasing its price by more than 33% on average. How do we know that it has had no consequence on these data?

Perhaps even the Gamepass subscriptions for Starfield and other important releases during September are what have caused this decline to be no greater.

But OK, let's think that when talking about subscriptions there is only Gamepass and that PSplus is not a subscription service or that a 33% increase in its price without any improvement in the value it offers has had no consequence.🙃
you're right, I forgot about the ps plus increase, I'd love to see the breakdown tho. According to the below tweet, gp had a 'bump'.

Well there you go, GP got a positive bump, but the drops in other subs was enough for it to account a total 2% loss in all sub services.

All things considered, I think Starfield did decent sales on Steam as expected. It is definitely not Skyrim in space sales-wise, or Fallout, and most certainly not the system seller for Xbox that it desperately needed.

It would be interesting to see if it has the legs to retain its spot in the charts next month. We saw in the UK that it had a steep drop in the charts for its 2nd and 3rd week. Let's see if it follows a similar trend in the US.

The fact that Starfield, the game some on gaf touted as "GOTG" and "The start of the XBOX comeback!" only had a negligible affect in XBOX's strongest territory, is alarming.

But the mental gymnastics to damage control that fact, has the rest of us watching like...

- surprised Starfield sold so well considering it's on gamepass.
- PS5 can sell without effort. Holiday with spiderman 2 will be monstrous.
- they way people go on you would think there was a big massive gap. Not PS5 - 15.73M, XBS - 11.67M. Looks healthy to me.

May I ask where that figure is from?

Nah, Spider Man's gonna be #1 for October, that's not a hard thing to guess.

So the biggest Xbox game that was supposed to be the game of the generation didn't even manage to bump it's sales past the PS5 for a single month.

What other huge exclusive games is supposed to sell the console after Starfield? It looks like the Xbox Series will be back to selling worst than the Xbox One after the minor blimp in the radar for this month.

Back to business as usual for Xbox , while the PS5 will be dropping the megaton that is Spiderman 2 on October.
Who said Starfield was supposed to be game of the generation? Who said that it was supposed to save xbox console sales? Genuine question: Todd? Phil? Who said any of this?

Let's not forget this statement

"Microsoft estimated it could get 10 million Starfield sales on PlayStation, but – surprise – opted to make it to an Xbox console exclusive instead.
What persuaded Microsoft to ditch these 10 million potential Starfield sales was the belief the company could recuperate these profits by launching Starfield via the Xbox Game Pass subscription service on both Xbox Series X/S and PC, not to mention increased console sales.
"

Reality :
Xbox's hardware was slightly up.
GP's subscription was slightly up.

To be fair that Spider-Man 2 bundle didn't include Spider-Man 2. I'm expecting the actual game bundle to help more with sales.

Soooo..... we're just going to ignore this game also released on Game pass and STILL sold shit ton and came in 7th for best selling gsme of the year - just - this year alone? Not even mentioning it only released only a bit over a month ago?

Oh.....okay cool! Carry on ..

To put things into perspective. Starfield is BGS's first RPG that has topped the Circana/NPD chart, including games which launched on XB/PC/PS at the same time.

This is despite the game launching on game pass.

And to think there were people who called it an "unmitigated flop" a few days back.

You
Starfield will be a "Halo" moment. For sure this is a landmark game.

Heisenberg007
That'll be a competition b/w Zelda and Spider-Man 2. Zelda might win by a slight margin though.

In terms of sales, I think this is how the 4 games will rank:
  1. Zelda
  2. Spider-Man 2
  3. Hogwart's Legacy
  4. Starfield

In reply to Heisenberg
Long term: anyone thinking any of these games will sell as many as Starfield long term, are nuts! That game will sell copies and copies for well over a decade or more.

You
Redfall will be ready to go. No way Phil allows Starfield to releases unpolished. The game has the potential to be a massive new IP for Xbox and almost certainly will be a system seller and increase Gamepass numbers substantially. It'll be surprisingly well polished up on release. I wouldn't doubt if Bethesda had help from other studios like TC.

You
Performance is one thing. But Bethesda makes stellar games - with bugs! The pedigree is there in spades and aces. These are generation defining games.

If you're not partaking in the 'Xbox = existential crisis' narrative, you're doing it wrong.

2. Previous Bethesda games were released in November and were competing with CALL OF DUTY.

3. Unlike previous Bethesda games, Starfield is showing ZERO signs of longevity (see Steam charts, UK charts).

1. March and October =/= November. Shocking I know.

2. They also launched on PlayStations (everything except Oblivion at least)

3. This is despite the game launching on Game Pass day 1. Something a lot of users here said would cannibalize sales.

Wrong, NPD did not track skyrim on PC or it would've been number 1 easily.

Edit: or not, looks like only Oblivion was #1.

It failed to be a 90+ and a system seller.

Great sales for Starfield. Jumping up to #7 after just one month is pretty impressive. Still need to see actual sales figures.
