[Digital Foundry] Metal Gear Solid Delta - PS5/ PS5 Pro Tech Review - A Beautiful UE5 Remake With Frame-Rate Issues

Blending the old with the new, Metal Gear Solid Delta potentially offers the best way to play Hideo Kojima's stealth-action classic. The Unreal Engine 5 driven visuals are standout, but it's clear that Konami has not optimised for 60fps strictly here; both base PS5 in and PS5 Pro waver between 40-60fps, with drops to 30 possible as well - with Pro hardware often coming out worse in comparison. Neither base PS5 or PS5 Pro are able to lock down 60fps

00:00 Introduction
03:05 PS5 Performance vs Quality Mode Comparison
05:40 PS5 vs PS5 Pro Comparison
10:11 Frame-Rate Tests
14:52 Conclusion

Summary

• PS5 has two Modes - Quality and Performance

• Performance Mode (60 FPS target): Struggles to maintain 60 FPS, often fluctuating between 40-60 FPS in jungle areas and dropping into the 30s underwater. It utilizes dynamic resolution scaling between 720p and 1080p, reconstructing to a 4K frame. This mode also shows more visual artifacts on fine details.

• Quality Mode (30 FPS target): Offers higher resolution (1080p to 1584p, reconstructing to 4K) and boosted settings, including increased small object draw distances, improved shadow LODs, and enhanced global illumination. However, it suffers from uneven frame pacing and drops below 30 FPS at stress points, making it difficult to recommend for playability.

• Cutscenes: All cutscenes on base PS5 run at 30 FPS with uneven frame pacing, regardless of the chosen mode.

• The PS5 Pro combines the boosted settings of the quality mode with a 60 FPS target.

• Surprisingly, the PS5 Pro often runs at a lower frame rate than the base PS5 in performance-intensive areas, with the base PS5 showing up to a +7 FPS advantage in some jungle segments.

• It utilizes Sony's PSSR upscaler, which offers advantages in cleaning up flickering artifacts and dealing with occlusion artifacts.

• However, PSSR can result in lower overall detail resolution compared to base PS5 and accentuates global illumination flickering, leading to more shimmer in interiors and shaded outdoor areas.

• PS5 Pro users are stripped of any graphics mode toggle, leaving no alternative options.

• While outdoor jungle areas show a clear downgrade, some interior sections like the lab complex run better on PS5 Pro.

disappointing performance on consoles across the board , pro version runs like crap , has no quality mode and has worse GI flickering
virtuos studios are incompetent and should be avoided by every publisher.

Jesus fucking christ. Ps5 pro! I sold my PS5s and get worse performance with an £800 system....

Embarrassing.

I bet the PC version is fubared too.

Mafia now this. Pro is a disaster. And ps6 with 160w 160b doesnt seems to be much faster in raster. Time to move to pc ;d In case of Mgs Delta easy fix for pro: remove pssr, increase internal res and add 40fps cap toggle but Konami will do nothing Im quite sure.

Still watching, but anyone else likes the yellow filter of the original?

The game takes place in 1964 and I recall at the time of the release, I liked the color palette because it reminded me of an old film with worn out colors.

If its the same dev as Oblivion, I'm guessing there'll be no performance fixes...
The first step in fixing performance is to throw ue5 in the garbage bin where it belongs, and it's a little too late for this. Without the first step all others don't make any sense.

I've got no love for the piss filter esthetic at all. Every game looks better without it.

It's a fucking shame. I went from putting MGS: Snake Eater on my "to buy" list to a "nah, I'll wait till it gets patched - if ever".

UE5 will remain shit until Witcher 4 is released in a couple of years and that @%#% 3D engine has finally entered a usable state. But even then there'll be devs still struggling with unoptimized, older revisions of that engine that they got stuck with during the development process.

I usually dislike it, but I think it fits in rare cases like this one.

Also Lunatic_Gamer Lunatic_Gamer the Pro actually has a lower resolution than the base PS5 Quality Mode.

PSSR does help though.

It has lower internal res on avarage than base ps5 performance mode ! Tom later in video showed few examples. Also worse performance.

lol, CDPR games run like junk on consoles. I wouldn't get my hopes up for them to fix the performance issues of UE5.

Are we sure Virtuous worked on the engine?
We know they did the assets, but Konami also had an internal team that lead development with Virtuous supporting.

Still, i will be there day 1 with a Pro to experience the crappy performance.

PC gamers are going to disagree with you, but I wholeheartedly agree and I think anyone who calls it a simple piss filter didn't play beyond the first section of the game. Each area had a different type of color grading, not just 'yellow'.

That fucking unreal engine in combination with PSSR ruining every game... 😭

I still love my pro because of the excellent upgrades Sonys exclusive games got. But they use different engines...

First Silent Hill 2, now this. I have no hope for Silent Hill f...

They should at least offer something like a base mode that disables all Pro features and runs the game like on a base PS5!

If Oblivion is anything to go off then your best off swerving that as well.

No way are these cunts getting more of my money for a another remake unless it runs flawlessly.
Oh yeah don't worry I'm not paying full price for this, will get in on sale way down the line

PC is in the toilet too for both (Mafia is in FUBAR state on some locations on my 4080), at least Pro is not riddled with traversal stutters and DLSS-enabled crashes.

UE5 can pound sand though.
