[Digital Foundry] Metal Gear Solid Delta - PS5/ PS5 Pro Tech Review - A Beautiful UE5 Remake With Frame-Rate Issues

Publishers need to stop using Virtuos. They're shit for getting a game to run decently.

Batman Arkham collection, Oblivion, CP2077 (Since they've started updating it, it's getting buggier again), MGS 3 Delta all stick out as games they've got their hands on, and fucked up performance.

They're a poundland Bluepoint.

Unreal Engine 5

game has shit framerate

game runs below last gen level resolutions

GI has constant boiling in indirectly lit areas because it uses Lumen, aka. the worst cancer known to game graphics

WHAT AN UNEXPECTED SURPRISE!

I'm beginning to have some doubts about the DS2 sales comparison, lol.

Though the poor launch state didn't stop Oblivion remaster from selling tons. Let's see.

Mafia's PC version is so bad, DF didn't even cover it lol.

But surprisingly tho, the SX version runs even better than the PS5 Pro version in the comparison video DF did.

This is Virtuos, they just did the Oblivion remaster earlier this year which had better average performance on Xbox so I'm hoping this is the same case here.
In the same video, DF says they had the chance to play a demo of the XSX version at Gamescon, and while they don't have any records, the experience is very similar to what was described on the PS5 reviewed here. The advantage of the XSeries is that the minimum margin where VRR is effective is better (40fps) than on the PS5 (48fps), and that should give a better experience. But remembering the MGS collection, it's also cause for concern.

It's a shame such a poor and poor finish. And on top of that, the 30fps mode is a stuttering mess.

I had decided to buy it at launch (although more for nostalgia's sake), and now I'm struggling to reason with myself when there are other game releases that I'm really looking forward to.

Huge Metal Gear fan, but many assets and geometry from this game are from the PS2 original, with better textures, with the lighting doing the rest.

Not very worthy the 70/80 euros for me. Many later down the road...

Hardware lumen would fix most of boiling issues (+RR). PC version has it?

hardware lumen doesn't always fix the boiling. in fact in some instances I have seen it make it worse.

in Ninja Gaiden 2 Black, hardware lumen in one of the worst scenes in the game, had more boiling and more disocclusion artifacts than software lumen.
but maybe modifying it through .ini tweaks can fix it somewhat. that did help a bit in Silent Hill 2, where the default hardware lumen setting the game offered also looked like diarrhea.

Lumen simply is the worst thing to ever happen to video game graphics. it's so insanely low quality...

Still watching, but anyone else likes the yellow filter of the original?

The game takes place in 1964 and I recall at the time of the release, I liked the color palette because it reminded me of an old film with worn out colors.
From what I've seen of the game, I think what they did was make the effect much more subtle, which I prefer. There still is a yellow-ish color grading to everything, its just not straight piss filter like the original. I'm completely fine with it visually.

Its a gorgeous looking game with very dense foliage and detailed character models, I'm not surprised the console versions are struggling a little considering its UE5 too.

This fell like a fanmade game.

And base PS5 beating PS5pro wasn't on my card deck.

Embarrassing. Wasn't the same devs behind Oblivion Remake? So, keep your hopes in check for a patch.

Of course it's a shitshow after I canceled my Steam preorder and preordered it for the pro…I don't know what I expected

Just cancelled it again and rebought it on Steam…

Sad to see, but also expected given the engine and the studio behind it. ( No offence to them. I just don't think they're great from a technical, and optimisation perspective ).

Still Day One, of course.

Hopefully my peasant 12GB 3060 / 5700X can atleast hold a good 60fps at 1080p with DLAA.

I had a lot of stutter with Oblivion on PC. I ended up grabbing on PS5, which was much better. Possibly due to having a faster I/O than my AM4 build (?).

I'm in for PC with MGS3 though 🤞

This place is an extreme minority. Normies will see the 86 and buy it. All my friends who played the Oblivion Remaster didn't mention performance once, and one of them was on the Series S.

The remake looks sterile by comparison; it has a lack of charm/flair to it.

Surprisingly, the PS5 Pro often runs at a lower frame rate than the base PS5 in performance-intensive areas, with the base PS5 showing up to a +7 FPS advantage in some jungle segments.

• It utilizes Sony's PSSR upscaler, which offers advantages in cleaning up flickering artifacts and dealing with occlusion artifacts.

• However, PSSR can result in lower overall detail resolution compared to base PS5 and accentuates global illumination flickering, leading to more shimmer in interiors and shaded outdoor areas.

• PS5 Pro users are stripped of any graphics mode toggle, leaving no alternative options.

• While outdoor jungle areas show a clear downgrade, some interior sections like the lab complex run better on PS5 Pro.
So yea ... the PS5 pro continues to be a disaster.

No wonder Sony started talking about the PSSR update in 2026 so soon.

Considering the stick PSSR gets, that's quite the improvement considering the low resolutions it has to work with here

It's a mixed bag, those things which are behind objects get resolved quicker.

But for the overall picture, Pro is inexplicably blurrier than even the base PS5 at mid and distance range for geometry and foliage.

As an aside, this is the perfect example you should show someone what a 'remaster' is vs. what a remake looks like.

UE5 is easily the biggest disaster in modern gaming and it's not even close

I will still get it for PS5, base, which is superior here, because it will recapture that PS2 performance and frame drops.

They really went after that old feel and they nailed it
