[Digital Foundry] Metal Gear Solid Delta - PS5/ PS5 Pro Tech Review - A Beautiful UE5 Remake With Frame-Rate Issues

PC gamers are going to disagree with you, but I wholeheartedly agree and I think anyone who calls it a simple piss filter didn't play beyond the first section of the game. Each area had a different type of color grading, not just 'yellow'.
It's clear that the original has a strong artistic intent behind it.

I can't say the same about this remake.

PC is in the toilet too for both (Mafia is in FUBAR state on some locations on my 4080), at least Pro is not riddled with traversal stutters and DLSS-enabled crashes.

UE5 can pound sand though.
Techpowerup and Daniel Owen said Mafia runs alright on PC with only minor traversal stutters at transition points. The problem is the game is quite heavy for the visuals on display, but if you turn down the settings, you can get a good experience.

I had a very poor experience with DLAA QHD, maybe DLSS fixes stutters, but it introduces a lot of crashes.

Point is, with UE5 nowhere is safe. There is no better versions, only many flavours of bad UE5 implementation.

Mafia now this. Pro is a disaster. And ps6 with 160w 160b doesnt seems to be much faster in raster. Time to move to pc ;d In case of Mgs Delta easy fix for pro: remove pssr, increase internal res and add 40fps cap toggle but Konami will do nothing Im quite sure.

Pc is always the best choice, no matter how much it hurts to some to hear this.

I'll play this in my 4090 with DLAA and ultra settings and have no issues whatsoever

My personal experience 1 week ago was quite poor both with FPS and with weird stutters and Lumen glitches. Judging by Steam reviews, I'm hardly alone.

This makes me sad. Looks like im passing on one of my favourite games of all time.

You're talking about metal gear here right?

CPU Bottlenecking?
UE5 is, generally, a real-time engine, which is why it's so darn heavy. For a game like MGS3, you don't really need - nor want, if you're aiming to hit the artistic vision of the original - everything in real-time. Real-time micro-poly, real-time lighting, real-time software GI... MGS3 is a pretty static game from that perspective. I'm betting they just ran with it OOB, instead of taking the time to bake everything that doesn't change, which of UE5, buys you back enough perform so you're not upscaling 720p in 2025.

You know what you're doing, and the way you wrote it.

What are you really trying to do here?

Why are you on the defensive towards me on what is factually an inexcusable PS5 pro port?

Infact, just leave it there. I dont need to deal with another Sony fan who is butthurt over comments about their precious plastic box. It's a Friday, be happy.

Surprisingly, the PS5 Pro often runs at a lower frame rate than the base PS5 in performance-intensive areas, with the base PS5 showing up to a +7 FPS advantage in some jungle segments.

720p and cant reach stable 60 fps? The game is not even open world.

Wtf is going at Virtous
I will take Cheap Contractor Slop for $200, Alex!

Apparently Konami was ok with this since they must have set the release milestones. Watch this to never get fixed, same as Oblivion Remaster.

This is not only the engine, this is the same developer made Oblivion remake.

It's said that Virtuos is contributing the development. But if it is indeed they have major role in this as well, they really suck at UE5. But if they suck majorly, how come big companies still using them?

And also it has become tiresome to hear the same thing again and again --> UE5=Stutterfest + uneven FPS and FPS rate.

Come on man, this has become too much. If UE5 is so garbage why do developers use the engine. If it is not an engine problem then how the hell do you reach the same final problems in every game. For the last 2-3 years I feel we are really skidding at the same point. There is an evident problem here but everyone blaming the other part. Really, who is to blame? UE5 or the developers?

not gonna bitch about UE5 but this happen when an engine let you make pretty things easy. im guessing no future update is gonna fix this. i guess im gonna wait for the PC version or the PS6 BC to play it.

Ouch. I had this preordered on Amazon but now I think I'll wait.

Developers, please stop using UE5. Precious few of you can make it not run like shit. And by "precious few" I really mean Ninja Theory at this point. UE5 sucks dick.

When they said Pro enhanced they meant it's closer to the original snake eater at release. Take that base ps5!

Surely this will have a sizable Day 1 patch?

Same studio that did Oblivion Remaster. You may gent a patch or two, but I wouldn't expect performance to be much better afterwards.

If that happens, it would be pretty funny to be fair. But isn't PC version kind of sucky anyways?

Mafia's PC version is so bad, DF didn't even cover it lol.

But surprisingly tho, the SX version runs even better than the PS5 Pro version in the comparison video DF did.

This is Virtuos, they just did the Oblivion remaster earlier this year which had better average performance on Xbox so I'm hoping this is the same case here.

Still watching, but anyone else likes the yellow filter of the original?

The game takes place in 1964 and I recall at the time of the release, I liked the color palette because it reminded me of an old film with worn out colors.

Who is that on the right?

Damn, PS5 Pro version is worse...

30fps PS5 version is the best.

What would fix this shit: 30fps and 40fps modes on Pro + option to use regular PS5 performance mode on it (should be close to locked 60).

Dumbfuck devs...

Watching the video and this might be a contender for one of the worst Pro upgrades on a major release so far.

+ Close up things like Snake's beard and hair is covered well
- But mid /distant geometry has worse clarity than even base PS5's Performance mode
- And PSSR kinda shits the bed indoors with its coverage, notable shimmering etc
- And on top of all of the above, it runs 6, 7 fps worse than base PS5's Performance mode in comparison areas
- There's not even a choice for Pro owners to choose a Quality mode, they are given a single mode and that's all they have

Yikes.
