[Digital Foundry] Star Wars Jedi Survivor PS5 Pro: Severe Image Quality Problems... But RT in Performance Mode Is Nice

And that's why I never liked them(developers) having complete control over my performance. This game runs/ran bad on PC. A well known modder released a mod that adds Reflex, DLSS, and Frame Gen. People would be surprised how playable those three things made this game for PC.
PC gamers spend thousands to have the privilege of fixing their own broken games for free.
Shocked How I Met Your Mother GIF

Talk about being a corporate whore.

Been saying this for years: the biggest mistake of this generation was the focus on RT. Even with the bump in the Pro, these AMD GPUs are just dogshit at RT. And FSR is a gen behind DLSS.

Get back to rastering and IQ/Framerate. I haven’t seen anything this gen that’s graphically blown my mind to justify 30fps. If anything, i occasionally choose 30fps modes because they’re more locked compared to performance modes that dip or frame drop.

Yep

Games like HFW blow me away far more without RT

The only dev I give credit to for RT is Insomniac, they are wizards at optimization and have their games running flawlessly with RT in 60 fps modes

But truth is it just ain’t necessary and the performance cost in most cases isn’t worth it

I mean sure first party games have good implementation but 1) that’s the least we can expect 2) they mostly are games still running on PS4 engines and already had perfectly fine PS5 version.

What we see if that for 3rd party next gen only games which are pushing the envelop on the technological front (and there are not a lot of them even 4 years after the next gen launch), the Pro upgrade seems to not be a good uplift enough to give a satisfying boost over the standard PS5

Plenty of third party games are seeing good results on Pro like FF7R, Stellar Blade, Hogwarts Legacy, F1. Some of which had terrible modes on base PS5

Remedy and EA just don’t get how to make an optimized game

Jedi Survivor can't even get a locked 60 on a 4090 without stuttering. "I believe a 1500$ GPU should be less shit" .

See how it sounds like bait?
Exactly, too many stupid takes in this thread. I own a 4090 and a PS5 Pro and I'm very well aware of shitty optimization we've seen from games this gen.

People in this thread acting like Jedi survivor isn't a game that is cursed even on the best PC hardware lol...

The Pro just dropped and will need time for the devs to get around the hardware. We've already seen several games showing huge improvements over the base consoles. Acting like Jedi Survivor running shit on the Pro is a problem with the hardware is also the same as acting like Jedi Survivor running shit on a 4090 means the 4090 is a piece of shit. Too many system warriors in this thread exposing themselves, it's embarrassing.

It's not his fault, if you don't own the machine you can only base your judgment on what you read and see around, and this is what the media coverage has shown so far.

DF could have:

• Started the coverage by showing Resident Evil games running with RT in Resolution Mode at 60fps over the 45-50fps of base PS5 and Series X.

• Shown then Devil May Cry 5 running also at 60fps in Resolution with RT, and compared it with a 4090 where there's no RT at all looking a generation behind in comparison.

• Do the same with Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster, also compared with base Consoles at similar performance levels with the little addition of RT reflections used on every single thinkable surface, looking light years ahead previous RE Engine reflections, being the first instance of transparency RT reflections from Capcom, and also looking a generation above a 4090 they could have compared it with.

• Shown The Last of Us Part I as a PSSR showcase being comparable to both DLAA and DLSS and solving hair dithering better.

• Focus on how Ratchet fur looks resolved more realistically with PSSR than Nvidia solutions, and how the same goes for aliasing.

• Shown Forbidden West running on Pro as an IQ achievement in general.

And you can bet your ass the discussion around this machine would be very different, compared to all the "It's a scam" you get by only focusing on the stinkers. And it's pretty hard for me to believe this isn't 100% deliberate.

I know what you mean, but to correct you, the pc running like shit but look good and pro look like shit but run good.

Either way, they are both shit.

The best approach to generate clicks is to give fuel to trolls.
Next update will be thousands of words on another clearly broken update like SH2.
After that unfortunately for them there aren't many others left.

Yeah their coverage has been odd.

They’ve only dedicated videos to sm2, aw2, and Star Wars

2/3 are the worse examples on the system

The poor patches are an outlier, not the normal.

Where’s their dedicated video for all the good patches?

Even when the Pro version is clearly a lot better they tend to focus on negative stuff. Im playing DA on Pro and it looks really good in performance mode and locked 60 even in the craziest combat. When they talked about it in the Pro video it sounded like the update is broken or something lol

Shitshow. At this point, the best enhanced games I played on the Pro don’t have a Pro patch - AC6 and Elden Ring. Anything without a Pro patch that runs at dynamic resolution and unlocked frame rates gives better results than these Pro patches idiocies.

One interesting about the pro that I have noticed and Oliver too. PSSR seems to resolved better image clarity/detail while in motion than even DLSS. assuming Oliver setting everything equally on the pc.

I noticed this in silent Hill 2, the pro look exactly the same maybe worst than the ps5, but once the running start, the pro show substantially more clarity. On DD2, the pro look quite a bit better, but in motion, it look significantly sharper. It is even more apparent in The First Descendant.

I believe it's the thought of what are literally his favorite games looking and running much better on this rival platform than his, where soon even Xbox "exclusives" are going to run on, including one very soon he used to react violently when people suggested could come on PS5.
Not a spot I would like being in after dedicating my whole internet life and dignity to the competition.

We'll see what they'll do next.
Based on how they're handling themselves, I wouldn't be surprised to see them making a big deal out 0.1% drops to 57fps happening on Resident Evil Remakes in those extreme cases where it dropped to below 35 on base Consoles.

Yep.

they continuously fail to point out where pssr has higher clarity than DLSS in certain instances and only focus on parts where DLSS does better

Its just terrible reporting, they also don’t take a step back and holistically look at what’s on offer, focusing on edge case shit that’s not very noticeable

So here is the video of what I mentioned about the pro with much more clarity when in motion vs stand still.

I noticed this in DA aswell. When i was standing still the game looked a bit blurrier, but when i started moving it was more clear. Both FSR and DLSS works the other way no?

Because no one cares about it being sharper if its more unstable. It's not an equivalent trade off.

All you need to do is cross reference the videos they've done this week. You'll see all of them are games from their 2023 Top Graphics rankings that got dedicated PS5 Pro patches.

But please keep digging, it's pure comedy. :messenger_smiling_with_eyes:

You guys all missed the praise the last of us, ratchet, FF, stellar blade and some others got from them?

Maybe they should only talk about good patches to not hurt your feelings?

Consumers should be informed about turds.

Dedicated videos post-launch has been lacking

Some games just had a few minutes coverage

Meanwhile nearly an hour for aw2

Yep.
FSR can be sharp as hell, more than DLSS in some cases, and yet no sane person would ever claim FSR is better than DLSS.
PSSR surely has to work on stability, especially if most devs decide to stick to such questionable internal resolutions.

You guys all missed the praise the last of us, ratchet, FF, stellar blade and some others got from them?
Maybe it's all the people in this Thread calling the Console a scam, a joke, and a disaster that missed them.

We had plenty of high-end PC users more than satisfied with the machine on GAF, and yet due to the general consensus caused by the coverage you see stuff like Series S owners shitting on this thing.

I just don't understand the point of these Pro consoles. PSSR is simply not ready. This is just a beta for PS6. There is barely any resolution gain from the base version and has worse artifacts ffs. If I was a PS5 Pro owner, I would be pissed that the extra computing power is being used for this upscaling algorithm rather than pushing for higher native resolutions and higher graphics settings.
The choice on what to use is on the dev, not the hardware manufacturer.

Did Sony say bad words about your mom or something?

I watched the video now... and one thing that came up was a curious one.
at 7:32: "it sorta reminds me of XeSS with heavy upscale factors"

imma quote some stuff from the TLOU2 Pro performance thread.

interesting to note is that apparently in the code of the UE5 plugin for PSSR, PSSR uses nearly the exact same names and terminology for its variables and settings as those that previously were only used by XeSS.

which makes me wonder if PSSR is a modified version of XeSS
it is a bit strange that all other upsampling methods have very distinct naming conventions. this is true for XeSS, DLSS, FSR, and TSR. PSSR is the only one that is this similar to another one, which happens to be XeSS.

so it is curious. and it wouldn't be that far fetched, as Intel already plans to eventually make it entirely open source.
so it wouldn't be surprising if Sony worked with Intel to fork off of it. especially since XeSS is very close to DLSS in quality in many games
Yeah ths guy here mentions that PSSR uses the same terminology as XeSS

It was hidden in S2R files.

it feels more and more likely that PSSR is a fork of XeSS to me. nothing confirmed of course, but the similar appearance at points, the highly similar UE5 plugin command lines, and the fact that it would be a good starting point for Sony to get into ML Upsampling, it all would kinda make sense.

They are picking the worst games running on Pro! They did the same thing when PS4 Pro was released when they did full articles about how TLOU remastered was running slower (before been patched).

Where are the fully featured articles about Dragon Dogma 2, BG3, Monster hunter Wilds. Where is the full comparison between Spider-man 2 PSSR and PC DLSS? They seem to focus on the worst cases of games running on PS5 Pro, exactly like I expected they would.

Alan Wake 2 and this game are the worst games on Pro, litteraly.
This is funny, just a month ago when DF was showing first party games we all were saying "this is nice but these games look already great on PS5 as it doesn't use FSR, we want to see the most demanding games that are struggling hard on PS5 due to FSR usage like AW2, SH2 and Black Myth (and FF7 Rebirth even tho this one doesn't use FSR, and it has been shown by DF btw)"

Now that they show these games people is asking them to show more from TLOU 2 again, a CRPG and a beta that isn't even Pro patched? nobody ever asked to see these games on the Pro

By the way if i recall correctly they already compared Insomniac's Ratchet's PSSR vs DLSS already right?

Yeah.. with this and the Alan Wake 2 video where they compare PSSR to DLSS..

It is pretty clear PSSR is kind of a shitty tech - more FSR than DLSS really

If you only look at earlier versions of it and exclude all the good implementations that we can literally see, by all means.

Chances are they’re using the earlier version of PSSR with the tell tale strobing/swimming issue that is exacerbating issues with high frequency noise and poor sampling on RT. We’ll be out of the teething stages soon enough.

Sony first parties are using newer versions?

Absolutely, should be the minimum really. You don't force your sub-720p and broken AO on customers when it would be possible to play in an infinitely better state on the same machine.
Especially if you’re dealing with what is a “Pro” console, that mostly only enthusiasts will purchase anyhow. Let those customers be able to dive in and tune and tweak their settings a bit more, while also having the typical “performance” and “quality” presets for those who still want a simple experience.

It’s like if I buy a “pro” smartphone, then I want to be able to tweak and optimize my camera settings to get the best images possible for a specific shoot.

Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart demonstrated this same behaviour pre release, but it was fixed by release. I think this game got its patch way back in September and there was a fairly substantial PSSR update between September and November. Publicly this information is buried in developer interviews. Should also be noted that Ratchet and Clank opted not to use the sharpening pass. It’s possible that titles exhibiting this behaviour have kept it in, which would naturally exacerbate the issues.

Did I state Sony was the singular culprit here? Sounds like some real fanboy victim complex. But yes Sony is actually partially to blame for overselling PSSR.
Grow up kiddo.

This game has been one of the most troublesome games on all platforms with weird choices from the devs coupled with questionable patches since the day it lauched and your first go-to is the hardware?

I have the Pro so yes I’m one of those beta testers. I’m I sour or mad about that? No not really, I kind of expected this since I was also quick to try out DLSS when that launched and that wasn’t pretty at all. But I take it from your posts that you maybe are too young to remember that and that’s OK.

They will do the absolute minimum hoping to increase sales for those who get a pro.

I've had this on PC since release as I got it Fred with my 7800x3d. However, I will not play or buy a PC game where the game is not finished snd smooth.

I'll play it when a 15800x3d is available along with 50GB/second nvme yransfer rate to make it playable.

Is the quality mode even able to handle the higher quality rt effects from the PC at 30fps? Jesus this console has been underwhelming. All i can hope is devs are getting to terms with the machine and these are lazy ports because if not...this is near twice the price of the ps5 fksakes.
