Doctor Who 50th Anniversary |OT| Splendid Chap, All Of Them

Cranston directed BB, no reason why Capaldi shouldn't. I already think it suspect Moffatt isn't writing the opener... gradually weaning himself off the show perhaps?

I had heard about
Daleks
being involved in the first Capaldi episode.

Interesting that it may not be written by Moffat.

To be fair, it doesn't say that it'd be the first episode of the series, just the first episode with that particular enemy.
It'd be a safe formula for Moffat to have them pop up 4 or 5 episodes in, which if this returns to a Series 1-5 formula would make it the first two parter there. That's pretty standard! Moffat's a man who said "You're not really the Doctor until you've faced the Daleks," after all.

Another synopsis:
The Doctor and Clara are still stuck in the Doctor's timeline, and the only way out is to open the lock on the Doctor's darkest day, The Time War.

Hm. I have a sneaking suspicion Moffatt's grooming him for command...

He's never ran a TV show before, and he's got a very promising career in film on the horizon. He's a very successful director, but his writing career consists of a few episodes of Time Trumpet and The Wrong Door and his first two films. He doesn't fit the bill, he'd be too risky for the BBC-- he's a great director, but to run the whole show? He'd never take over. I mean, you could argue bringing his wife on board is a step towards a double team at the top, really, but I doubt it. That's likely more to do with how desperate Moffat is to get more female writers on board because the press keep sweating the show over perceived sexism. Amy Jump's a great writer, mind.

The previous line-up remains true. Gatiss, Whithouse, Chibnall. With the success of Broadchurch the latter, who for a long time I felt was most likely due to the fact he was an understudy of RTD in day-to-day running of Torchwood Series 1, seems unlikely.

That said, I reckon the evidence for a case for Gatiss is stacking up. There's the success of Sherlock for the BBC to look to. He's got lots of experience on other very successful shows - League of Gentlemen etc. This year, the green light was given to two projects he'd been pitching to Moffat/RTD/The BBC since 2005 - Ice Warriors & a Docudrama on the show's genesis. Him getting his way at last could be seen as a sign. Finally, there's how he reacted when he was asked if he'd like the job in September - a massive blush, incredibly defensive body language and "You know I can't answer that," I think he's basically already been quietly told he's next to the throne if he wants it. Which he will.

Doesn't Gatiss write the most mediocre Who episodes though?
I maintain that The Crimson Horror was the first time Gatiss has been properly let off the leash and given free range to make the Doctor Who he really wants to see. The excellence of that episode was the first time I properly saw Gatiss as a proper contender.

Still want Whithouse, mind.

Agree all around. The Crimson Horror was a delightful episode, if you look past that whole Doctor/Jenny thing that happened.

People liked the Crimson Horror? It was so... mediocre. Just, thoroughly mediocre in every aspect. Not bad, per se, I just struggle to find anything recommendable about it.

It's all in the tone, really. The Crimson Horror had this marvellous, twisted, League of Gentlemen-y tone to it, with a great villain to boot. It's self-assured and confident like nothing else Gatiss has done for the show- only the pre-titles of The Unquiet Dead comes close, and there was a good chance that was RTD's work.
I'm cool with genocide. Not so sure about borderline sexual assault.
He kissed a friend in the excitement of the moment and got swiftly reprimanded for his intrusion. By no measure is that sexual assault.

The BBC has released the episode to at least some television stations already, so be extra careful about reading spoilers.

Tell us what you know.

At least tell us if there are more than three Doctors in it.

I was exaggerating a bit. Still just a shade out of character in my opinion, but it bothers me not nearly as much as it bothers the people it really bothers.

He's been doing some interviews and stuff for this, and in it he indicates the window for him to sign on to Series 8 has passed, so he won't be doing an episode. He said before he was trying to find time for it. He pretty much says he'll be back for 9, though.

Regarding Gatiss, I do think he has a weak suite of episodes (his best only sits near RTD or Moffat's batting average, I think) but he's also the one of the people on the series who'd likely tick every single box the BBC will be glancing at AND would get the nod from Moffat and/or RTD if asked.

The boxes I'm talking about are:
  • Has ran successful shows both at the BBC and elsewhere prior
  • Has successfully produced (British, small-scale) movies
  • Accomplished/Award Winning Writer
  • Incredibly well-versed in Doctor Who lore
  • Wrote four NSA novels and was involved in other Who pulse-keeping activities while the show was off-air
This is basically the same list of qualities RTD and Moffat both fit, and none of the newer people like Whithouse quite fit all the criteria, and thus would, on paper, be a greater risk. I think in particular the 'old boys club' sense of those people who did the Virgin novels and things like that burns particualrly strongly, and I think whoever takes over next is likely to be from that same pool. Sherman never returned after 'Dalek' - he never got the timing right despite being invited back by RTD, and allegedly he and Moffat don't get on - and others have dropped off similarly, leaving Gatiss. His episodes have been weak, but that said I think Gatiss could be a GREAT Doctor Who showrunner, but if he took on the role I'd like him to write less than RTD & Moffat did per series.

My worry with him is where his personal interests sit - if you look at his episodes, you've got: Victorian Britain, 1950s, World War 2, 2011, 1980s, Victorian Britain. Even his NSA novels are similar - with no budget or FX shots to worry about in novel form and only his imagination the limit, three of the four novels are set in Britain, all in the recent past and one in WW2. He has a very particular interest in Earth and the past, especially in a slightly jingoistic-feeling view of Britain. If he is to take over, I'd like him to do something well out of his comfort zone in Series 8, which he's already said he's doing stuff for.

NAH you can't just say that!!

They've also sent it out to (some?) cinemas already, but on an encrypted hard drive.

My only question is: suitable tribute to all of Who, all 50 years, or does it feel more focused on modern, RTD/Moffat era stuff? Time war etc.

I really did not like the last series with Clara.

My opinion on the special is.....

I liked it a lot.

If you're not going to drop anything that can later be used to verify that you're not lying, you shouldn't be doing this at all.

More than 3 Doctors? Y/N?

I know I havent contributed much but I'm a massive fan of the show and enjoy reading this thread every day and right now I'm not sure how I feel about suddenly knowing what potentially might happen.

I know its the spoiler thread, but I dunno, its been kept a secret for so long, were right there, the last few days, and then this.

Mixed feelings.

Yeah, let's hope it remains under wraps with just over 2 weeks to go.

I mean, surely with this episode, for me at least, the draw is the occasion and the actual anniversary rather than the content of the episode. I want that hype as I head to the cinema with my friends and sit down and watch Doctor Who, on a massive screen, in 3D. I don't really give a damn if one of the Bakers make a cameo or the Zarbi make their triumphant return.

That's why the whole trailer hoopla earlier this year bugged me. People seem to be acting as if this one, 75 minute thing is the be all and end all and totally forgetting the actual point of why we're celebrating.

whynotboth.gif, basically. The anniversary is the reason the episode is happening, but it's rare stuff stays spoiler-free until day of broadcast in this age so it'd be cool to have that mystery going into the screening.
