Doom: The Dark Ages |OT| Mod City

Weird it allows native with Nvidia by selecting the DLAA option which is Nvidia's version of AA.
It lets you run native TAA and FSR AA too. That's still not allowed to be disabled and use 4xMSAA (as God intended). Hugo doesn't care how much you spent on the GPU, he's blurring your shit. At least a little bit.

Honestly i am very surprised with alot of the negativity from certain fans. then again it took me a day to truly get out of the Eternal shell before I could really vibe with dark ages. Either way solid FPS that i hope many other FPS's take from. Common duke nukem.
The game started to sort of click once I got the Skullcrusher gun. Enjoying it, despite some of the issues I've got with the parrying system.

Basically, who gives a fuck about what that charlie dude has to say?

5 missions done, it's...good. While I'm enjoying the new mechanics removing glory kills was a big mistake, it made the combat feel so much more visceral, got your blood pumping and looked fucking *awesome*, kind of feels like the Slayer has been neutered. Objectively it means the dev spending less resources coming up with all those unique animations but I'm not seeing how those resources were put towards much else.

One might argue the "unique sequences" do just that. While I'm enjoying these missions they do make the overall flow of the campaign feel more disjointed and going to a mundane mission select screen after each level is immersion killing. As far as the visuals are concerned again, I'm not seeing much difference vs Eternal, maybe I should redownload it and compare it directly. The game looks good and runs flawlessly on Pro but it just isn't particularly impressive.

No doubt I'm having fun but it just isn't giving me the same feeling the previous two titles did. Interestingly, TDA was in my top 5 most anticipated of 2025 but I can almost already tell it won't finish in my top 5. Two games that *weren't* in my top 5 (KCD2 and Clair Obscur) are currently my 1 and 2 respectively, funny how things sometimes play out.

What type of pregression does the game has?

Skill trees? Finding stuff that improve stats inside the level? New gadgets?

And what type of upgrade we are talking about? +5 damage to stun enemies or more interesting stuff like new skills etc or modifier for weapons?

Everything is related to improving your weapons/equipment through resources like Gold. Example: make shotgun shoot incendiary rounds, make your shield ricochet off specific enemy types etc. You can also defeat mini bosses to permanently upgrade health/ammo/shields.

When you say equipment do you also mean the shield? Like more charges, less downtime etc.

So far my ranking for Doom games is

1. Eternal
2. Dark Age
3. 2016.

This could come close to Eternal depending on later levels. But I like it better than 2016 for sure due to additional mechanics over plain shooting.

So far I'm 5 missions in and every mission has introduced either new mechanics, weapons, gadgets or upgrades. No skill trees as such, but there are upgrade paths for all weapons which require either gold or gemstones to purchase.

Upgrades vary from charged weapons to damage over time (i.e burning) and other bits. I didn't see any increased damage outside of the longer you fire a weapon the more charge it has which increases fire rate or damage.

Stat increases are found through killing special enemies throughout some missions. So max health and armour increases are what I've found so far.

Its not too far removed from the other modern Doom entries in this context to be completely honest and if you enjoyed previous entries, then I'm fairly confident you'll have a good or perhaps even great time with this one. If you've got good FPS chops, play on Nightmare though as this feels more like Ultra Violence from previous games.

Played 2 levels in between Expedition 33. It does seem easier on ultraviolence compared to Eternal. I wish there was a slow mo effect when you parry like God of war.
I did not die once in level 1 on Ultra Violence and I wasn't even really locked in. There's not even punishment for bad gameplay. The greatest danger in random projectiles from across the map. Eternal will shred you on UV if you're playing sloppy. If you told me I was playing on easy last night I would have believed you.

What kind of combat flow did you guys use on Level 1? I couldn't find anything aside from one shot fodder and shield and melee combo spam for anything tougher.

Ok the PC version running like a dream. I was worried after i saw that benchmark a few days earlier... with a 5070ti, im running 1440p, ultra nightmare settings, DLAA, 3x framegen and getting around 200 fps. Feels so good

Goddamn this feels so good to play even on controller. PSA to devs, stop using awful aim acceleration in your titles by default. Reducing it to 0 makes the aiming feels so good. Thats the first thing i always do

Starting to play this game, in the first area yet, on my 6700 XT + 5600X + 32GB RAM build I'm getting around 70 fps with:
- High preset
- 1440p (Dynamic)
- XeSS Balanced

Amazing game so far.

Now, if only I could change its voice language... Do anyone know how to do that on Xbox app or within the game? I can't even find a .INI file to edit.

Also, do anyone know which FSR version is this game using? I don't see it anyway too.
I have slightly better specs but also run it at the same settings and... do you not think it looks like you're playing a Switch game? Laggy too (and combined with the Halo'esque floaty movement it's far removed from the snappy and frenetic gameplay of the previous games imo).

If GPU prices were cheaper I'd have grabbed a 9070 XT already but I'll have to put up with this for now, unfortunately.

they are all overdesigned and samey, guns just lack personality.
This has been my issue with the Nu Doom series in general. The amount of gaudy and garish excess on every last element since Eternal creates this visual overkill where I often don't know wtf I'm looking at. It's a bit of a double-edged sword with incredibly detailed modern graphics in general but their art direction triples down on visual clutter.

Yeah, wait- Why would the covenant release the chief into fighting more of the covenant?
It was just a random thought of mine. Given how you've got some dude in a ship discussing releasing the slayer. It all reminded me of Halo.

I finished Bringing the House Down before shutting it off last night. Cyberdemon's have some meaty health. Toughest enemy so far for sure.

What is going on with the graphics in this game? Switch between playing this and Eternal and the difference is night and day. It's blurrier and way less sharp.

Is it bugged or something?

I know im just saying what i dont like but i'm really enjoying the game. But here is another one. It's annoying to be asked if i want to use the life thing when i die. Actually makes the game worse. Either use them by default like doom eternal or get rid of it.

To those talking about the graphics being bad, HDR is jacked at the moment. I posted this temporary fix earlier but people are missing it. These settings from the game's HDR menu make it look sharp and crisp like Eternal until they patch it

It's an underwhelming reward for uncovering a secret. Too bad they can't just give you a bunch of skins with secrets. Usually I don't feel a thing for codex or whatever. Skins are always paywalled which drives down the hype. I'm using the preorder skin, which looks cool. It's like that whole display they had in Eternal. I wanted mine to look cool hours into the game and it felt like I had to spend more time than I wanted to in order to make it look cool.

The whole side objectives/quests/requirements bulks up the UI. That was ugly to have appear on my screen at first. I almost tried to see if I could get out of doing them.

The Lair segments are neat but dodging the same type of attack to the same type of enemy isn't something I really want to replay. I love the wing span on the dragon though.

I dont need Fat AVGN telling me how to adjust my TV picture to his liking

Everything looks super solid to me on my OLED on the Pro. Some of you have truly let garbage like Digital Foundry fuck you up :messenger_grinning_smiling:

I had a quick go on my lunch break with the difficulty cranked up to Nightmare and can confirm it feels MUCH better. I know some people like to feel like unstoppable tanks in games, but I much prefer to feel like I'm squaring up against near impossible odds and just about making it.

The game was overly dark and blurry on its default config on PS5 and even after tweaking it, it was the same. There is no excuse in 2025 for half assed HDR implementation, especially considering how great Eternal's was.

Maybe you need glasses if you think it looked "super solid" to you. In the meantime, that video tweak makes a night and day difference. Try it or don't, its a valid option and it makes the game look leagues better, and many have already confirmed it works.

My eyes are ace. Maybe your TV just sucks and all of your picture adjustments are wrong. I mean, you are a sloppy gamer after all.

I don't see why it's as demanding as it is. Nothing in the first map really makes sense for why it runs like it does. Maybe the tech is more advanced, but the artistic composition is worse. Just not as attractive to look at. Level 1 at least. You'd think they'd start with a visual banger. We will see.

Flail is 💯 Chainshot is 💯 when you get in that combat flow state this entry is just as good as it's predecessors, parry, melee, shield throw, guns blazing, every action melting into the next, reaping death and carnage 👌
