Doom: The Dark Ages |OT| Mod City

Is it true PS players?

There are upgrade stations where you can augment the shield guns and melee.

I think it looks very dark and blurry - unsure if this is a stylist change or what's going on, but Eternal was crystal clear and sharp as a tack. I think part of it is the art direction (more muted, less 80s themed colors), and part of it is RTX being forced on...thus resulting in much lower resolution.

I have slightly better specs but also run it at the same settings and... do you not think it looks like you're playing a Switch game? Laggy too (and combined with the Halo'esque floaty movement it's far removed from the snappy and frenetic gameplay of the previous games imo).

If GPU prices were cheaper I'd have grabbed a 9070 XT already but I'll have to put up with this for now, unfortunately.
IDK I've never felt Switch games like that, and even so this game feels more frenetic than I imagined by just watching the trailers

At chapter 6 now. Just did the first dragon section. Yeah, I dont know how I feel about this one. It looks and plays great. Its kinda cool and parrying isnt too bad yet. Music is alright but its mostly during battles and cuts off after you killed the last enemy. Guess it only really starts to get fun when you have all the weapons and abilities.

Finished 2 chapters loved 16 and eternal I don't know why it's not clicking with me maybe I'm old now was highly anticipating it.
The combat feels like a step back
So many red and green beams flying towards you , I don't know maybe it gets better after this

Finished the game, took 12 hours with all secrets on Ultra Violence. All points still valid, but to add a few.

- Open areas are a chore, especially with such anemic traversal. Plus do yourself a favor and enable auto sprint right now!
- Gunplay is a major disappointment. All guns are there just to fill the time between the mace/shield recharges, game could be easily 100% with the two-barrel plasma-rifle. Super shotgun is ass which is a travesty. It's 90% beat'em'up and maybe 10% FPS. Plus I don't vibe with the weapons visually, they are all overdesigned and samey, guns just lack personality.
- They really recycle bosses in the vein of Halo 5
- So much resources are spent on cutscenes and plot but it's a slop so generic it's embarrassing
- That being said the game is not bad, it's just the weakest of the 3 and more Hexen than DOOM
I hardly even use melee unless i need health. I kill most of my foes with my guns and I love them all. open areas are fine just wish there was a fast travel system. bosses were unimaginative. The cutscenes provided a nice brake why care about a story in a doom game? were you expecting shakespear?

It will click. As you get more weapons etc it kind of makes sense. The skullcrusher gun (or whatever it's called), the upgraded plasma gun and the super shotgun kick ass.

Still havent finished Clair so not fully starting this, but I did play a bit and performance on my PC maxed out is perfect for the first area. No stutters, maxed out, fg2x ofc, dlss quality 1440p, 160+ fps. Doesnt look that special, but yeah. Glad theres custom stuff to tweak since Im a psychopath, game speed was too slow, 130+ is perfect, parry windows as low as possible, nightmare difficulty, and good to go. Excited to play more once Im done with Clair.

HDR is bugged at the moment. I posted a vid earlier where he shows what's wrong (HDR black level floor is too high) which is resulting in the HDR looking too dark and blurry, and there are settings in it ive used myself on PS5 where it makes the HDR look great and more like Eternals until they hopefully put a patch out to fix it.

Okay, I beat it this morning. Took 16 hours total.

I really enjoyed it, but like others have mentioned, it definitely felt rough in places. I know people mentioned the possibility of a different internal team, if that's not the case, I think it could've just been rushed. There feels like a lack of animation with certain in-game NPCs, I've also seen the placed in the wrong areas so they're typing on air, lol. Bunch of invisible walls and other things that feel like they were done quickly to just make ends meet, etc. The game's still a lot of fun, the combat and the mechanics are great. If you liked the recent DOOM games, you'll likely enjoy this one, I just can't say how much.

For me, I think by the end of it I'm still thinking DOOM 2016 > DOOM Eternal > DOOM The Dark Ages.

The worst thing about this game IMO, is that for someone like me there's really nothing left for me to do. I beat the game, and that's that. If I cared to play through it on a harder difficulty, find all the collectables, etc. it'd be a different situation. But for me, I beat it, and that's that. One of my favorite things about 2016 was not just the tone feeling more like OG DOOM (because the story and lore didn't go all nanners yet), but the fact that it came with a lot of content. So once you were done, there was multiplayer, there was Snap Map, etc. With Eternal there was still some stuff there, but it much less than 2016 had. Now, with The Dark Ages, you have even less as there's just the campaign and secrets to find.

I'm not dogging on the game, I definitely had fun. But now that it's done, I honestly may just uninstall and revisit when the DLC eventually comes out.

Just finished the first level and... I hate it, why is this thing called Doom ? The fucking shield ? So many cinematics, i don't care about all that story bullshit, it was already bad in Eternal but here it's much worse, look i'm happy for people who like this but i just don't understand what the fuck they're doing, maybe i should play more but fuck man this is so far from what i think Doom should be, maybe i should just replay the older games and stop giving a shit about new things, i don't know man 💀

This is the way I'll be playing it. Gave it a try for about 10 minutes and it was pretty amazing. Basically looks like I'm playing on a movie theater screen but in full 3D

I did not die once in level 1 on Ultra Violence and I wasn't even really locked in. There's not even punishment for bad gameplay. The greatest danger in random projectiles from across the map. Eternal will shred you on UV if you're playing sloppy. If you told me I was playing on easy last night I would have believed you.

What kind of combat flow did you guys use on Level 1? I couldn't find anything aside from one shot fodder and shield and melee combo spam for anything tougher.
Playing on Nightmare, I can only imagine Ultra Violence is incredibly easy for anyone familiar with the modern Doom titles. Turn it to Nightmare and it'll be more aligned to your skillset. You'll get more weapons and gadgets as you progress through the levels. You can then replay levels with all the stuff you've unlocked.

The melee ammo is a great example of what I think the problem is. For one, the fact it exists means something didn't come to together in the balancing. Hard to believe it was planned that way. To put a cherry on it, the default HUD shows you the melee ammo count in three different places. Emblematic of what I experienced in level 1. Just feels like an incomplete vision. They had some great ideas, but in an effort to please both sides of the Eternal debate, it just didn't quite come together cleanly. Hence the sliders. The game strikes me as a product rather than a confident, realized vision.

Whoa, the OG shotgun is the one in Dark Ages. So this game takes place after Doom 64 when he goes through the hell portal?

I think the parry system would have been better if you could just parry any projectile. It's stupid to have to run out of your way towards a green projectile when there's an orange one right in front of you.

Bought it today on steam. new pc mind you.. crashed on intro... twice. uninstalled and refunded.
Nvidia?

Absolutely. The opening levels are nothing. This game has something like 22 levels. At least get to the 6th level when you start getting more tools and upgrades.

I think it's raytracing that does this. Especially without ray reconstruction.
Possibly. I'm playing on console and it's jarring how going back and forth between this and a last gen game (Eternal) is such a visual downgrade.

I'm not a graphics whore but id is usually really good with this stuff so it was surprising to see.

Eternal, the best FPS ever made.. There was nothing wrong with it, you didn't like it because you didn't want to manage anything and you found it either hard or stressful. Game was perfection! You and the other Eternal haters don't even know what the definition of an arena shooter is!
Wrong. Game was just trying to be too much. I don't give a fuck about "evolving" Doom. Doom is about horror and puzzles and blowing the shit up out of demons with a shotgun and other nasty weapons, not limiting my shotgun shells to make sure I use other weapons to try create havoc. Fuck that game.

Doom 3 keeps winning

Where's my plasma balls? Goddam the effects for the 'accelerator' are nothing in comparison!

2 chapters in, and the game seems pretty good. It's just more 'modern doom', with enough changes to make it stand different again. I think I'll enjoy it after all!

This is one of the weirdest games I've played this year. Because I'm kind of playing Doom but at the same time I'm not playing Doom, I'm playing something else... I've played about 4 hours so far, and I can't say I like it, but I can't say I really don't like it either...

I think I prefer this to Eternal. The combat scenarios are in large horizontal spaces with tons of enemies at the same time, instead of Eternal where the arenas were very vertical and relied on you running and jumping around.
The weapons are a little more fun, I love the Chainshot the most. It's still quite fast and relies on you having to time stuff like the shield parries and melee strikes, but the need for super accurate shots like in Eternal are gone. Which I kinda get why some liked them and some didn't. I liked shooting the turret off an arachnotron and other stuff like that, but I had real life friends who gave up on the game cause it was a struggle with a controller to be super accurate. I kinda miss glory kills too, even though they actually snuck a few in, but you have to melee the stunned enemy from a very specific angle to perform it.

Edit: Not having to juggle 10 different cooldowns like in Eternal also makes this quite stress free compared to that. You get more ammo from melee strikes and the cooldown for melee is quite fast and there are many ways to get more melee charges quickly, so if you prefer a certain weapon, you always have ammo for it when you want it.

Certainly a pastiche but many moments I also feel like I'm playing the modern God of Wars with the crazy amount of parrying (Especially against the Agaddon Hunters), repeat mini-bosses and the shield having a lot of the same functionality of the axe the further the game goes on.

I'm having a lot of fun with the game but I do get something of an "aw man" when I get those chapters consisting of a large map and multiple destination points to tackle at your leisure. Luckily none have been quite as big as Siege part 1, yet. =P

Played through the intro, it's a bit more on rails I think. Feel very squidgy on hard as well. Feel the best strategy is to work concentrically in.

QQ: I fucking trawled the entire first level, have green ticks everywhere and it says I'm missing a secret. Any ideas
