what time does gamepass release this tomorrow?

I've completed six levels. This is definitely an evolution of Eternal. There is correct way to play and if you don't engage mechanics correctly you will have a bad time.

Can't be worse than Black Myth Wukong... right? :goog_relieved:
Honestly, I haven't played it. I did see some footage of it though and I remember some pretty blatant ones. But there have definitely been a few here where I obviously look like I can go there, and I can't because of a wall. It just sucks considering how much they want you to search for secrets. I've always hated invisible walls so much, lmao.

You and me both man. I love taking my time in games looking into every nook and cranny, so having invisible walls can be quite frustrating.

Glad to read that aside from that you guys are enjoying the game, can't wait to read some late-game impressions when the game is throwing all it's punches.

Does it still feel like a seat of your pants, skin of your teeth, puzzle game in the way you need to complete battles?

It's starting to. You have to use certain moves on certain enemies and prioritize based on what's around.

It's not as strict about what guns you use like in Eternal. It's more about when to use the shield, when to throw it, when to melee, etc. it's a different dance this time and I'm still wrapping my head around it. There's a satisfying learning curve.

Are you still like, near constantly managing shit like cooldowns while you're attacking AND thinking about your next move?

To me it sounds like the same sort of combat formula as Eternal, you're just given a different set of tools and moveset.

You're only managing shield CDs and melee charges.

Dark Ages isn't as strict as Eternal, but it has a similar design philosophy with the mechanics. The focus here is more about avoiding projectiles and perfect parries.

Some of these arenas have me on my toes just like Eternal. You have to think about what you're doing. This is nothing like classic Doom or Doom 2016.

Eternal baffled me with this shit and I think 2016 was similar. There is no "pain" sounds for some reason. I can't tell how often I was just suddenly dead particularly in Eternal. I know they have screen flashes of sorts but it seems like really basic game design for there to be audio cues to taking damage.

That being said! I did see in some footage that this game actually has that now. Not sure if always happens but I did hear him grunt and shit now when taking damage.

I remember in 2016 you'd just die without sound and it was so weird.

Edit: forgot you're watching a stream where that isn't the case. I don't know then, I do remember clearly noting it in footage recently.
Huh? The low heart alarm is a defining feature in the reboots

So in essence, they changed it up for nothing because a lot of the Doom 2016 camp are still not going to like it anyway!?

I don't know why they listen to the garbage criticism and don't just make what's in their hearts. People need to start accepting the devs vision and stop complaining about the gameplay not be exact to what you want. Eternal as an arena shooter is as close to a perfect FPS as you can get but Doom 2016 camp just wants brain dead shooting with no other mechanics. Its too hard, it's too hard, that's what an arena shooter is, it's meant to be difficult to manage enemies on screen! I loved Eternal more than 2016 and thought it was an evolution/upgrade, I still liked Doom 2016 because both games are very well made. But you have Eternal haters just being disrespectful to the game and really the industry. They can't even see what makes that game good!

This is a good example of the gameplay loop by chapter 5 or 6.

This is a leader demon and you can't attack him until you kill enough demons to lower his morale. This guy playing is pretty fucking good and plays with precision and intent, when I played it I was spamming all sorts of guns and flying around with shield dashes. :messenger_grinning_sweat:

"Evolution of Eternal"

Please god no.
If it makes you feel any better, I loved 2016, kind of hated Eternal, and am having a ton of fun with Dark Ages so far.

While it has more mechanics to engage with than 2016, it does not feel as restrictive and demanding as Eternal. Dark Ages gives you a lot of tools, shows you when/how you _should_ use them, and lets you do your thing.

eg, yes you can use the shield to reflect the green attacks back and enemies to stun them. it's a great tool to use, but you are more than free to just dodge the attack and blast the demon in the face or use a melee combo. Eternal felt very punishing if you didn't play the "right" way. Dark Ages doesn't care (though I expect on higher difficulties it may require you to pay more attention).

Most importantly: Eternal's dogshit ammo economy is gone. 4 hours in I ran out of ammo for one gun, once (I really wasn't paying attention).

I've completed six levels. This is definitely an evolution of Eternal. There is correct way to play and if you don't engage mechanics correctly you will have a bad time.

I disagree. Even on Ultra-violence I don't find Dark Ages to be nearly as punishing to the player as Eternal. Like I said above, Dark Ages does give you a lot of tools and mechanics to engage with, and generally speaking they are helpful and satisfying to use - but the game still gives you choice on which tool to use most of the time.

Eg, if you've got a pinky rider, you can deflect green attacks back at him to stun/execute OR you can shield saw him and then blast him with the shredder + ricochet to also damage other enemies around him OR you can parry his charge and then melee combo OR you can say fuck all that and just blast him with whatever weapon you want (without feeling like you're wasting ammo).

I suppose it's an evolution in the sense of it gives you a lot of tools and mechanics like Eternal, but it does a much better job of letting you use your tool belt as you please rather than being as prescriptive as Eternal was.

Does anyone know the location of the soundtrack for the premium edition? I can't seem to find it.
Edit: nvm you have to install it on Game Pass. It's 17gb big.

I can't start playing till I decide which helmet I'm wearing to RIP & TEAR
How did you get that original Doomguy helmet? Love that.

One thing I will say is that I hate how many invisible walls I've come across in this. It feels like the largest record in awhile.
Yeah this has been bothering me a well. Much more so than the previous two games and I've only scratched the surface of TDA so far...

Plus $94/£71 import fee equals my most expensive helmet of which I own just around 60 helmets.

It was only released in the USA by limited run games and I think there weren't too many made so sold out very quickly.

Ebay does have a couple for sale at huge prices like I paid but much cheaper if you already live in the US as no import fee and very little delivery cost.

I'm only one level in. I really like it much better than internal. Which I thought had way too many systems. It was quite confusing to play.
However, what I will say is it kinda feels like it was made by AB team
There's a few things it make me wonder if this is basically A side game rather than a proper sequel.

It also plays really well on controller. As well as keyboard and mouse.

Okay, just finished the dragon mission. This is pretty fucking much DOOM all the way. I am surprised as really wasn't expecting much fun from what we've seen.
I'm on nightmare and honestly I really don't get this stand and fight stuff we've heard from basically everywhere during previews, I die constantly like nonstop even while on the move, this game is just as fast as ever.
Onto the first big open map I guess, I don't expect too much is gonna change from now on besides getting even more sweet new stuff just like last map the super shotgun fucking finally!

Yeah, and you can crank the speed up to 150%. It's insane fast then.

That's where it really starts to pick up. I think I misunderstood the game based on the preview footage because it was journos playing on easy. This game most definitely has the pure visceral gameplay from other DOOM games. A down in the trenches, blood and guts, rip and tear, full frontal assault affair. I'm playing with auto-sprint on and screen effects off. The speed is just fine and the demons swarms are relentless with plenty of variety. Fucking badass game.

P.S.- Love fighting the champions.

P.P.S.- Thira totally wants Slayer's babies.

I was kinda lukewarm on "evolution of eternal" and really slow Doomslayer.

But I can get down with dodging and parrying filling in for some of Eternal's flow of mechanics. Especially if the game can be sped up if needed. I find dodging, parrying, and brutal melee attacks generally satisfying in games. These gameplay vids are selling me on the Doom version.

The sequences where you defeat empowered demons, tear their heart out and crush it in front of them while they reach out for mercy are awesome.

Finally unlock shield runes and just maxed out the flail upgrade path. Fuck yeah. This game is extremely addictive.

Btw hearing that this is an evolution of eternal deflated any hype i had.
There's definitely a similar "dance of death" to Eternal: prioritizing certain enemies and weapon types against them, the need for constant movement, etc., but as previously mentioned you rarely run out of ammo for your favorite guns and you don't have to chainsaw all the time to get more. This game is more built around the shield. So it's has aspects that are like Eternal, but without some mechanics that people found frustrating. Dark Ages is fucking awesome. I don't think you'll regret giving it a shot.

On Nightmare difficulty (which is 2 under the hardest difficulty) yes absolutely. You need to monitor power gauntlet charges, move, block and parry in all different kinds of orders. You also need to make sure that some of the smaller mobs aren't eliminated immediately as they drop health/armour pickups which are necessary when dealing with tougher enemies that can down you in 2-3 hits.

I only just got to mission 3 but for me this is on par with Eternal so far. It's an awesome action game. If you want it to be more challenging or are a Doom veteran I definitely recommend nightmare difficulty with a smaller parry window. I'm no FPS master but anything lower than Nightmare is going to be a breeze and provide almost no challenge judging by how I've found Nightmare so far.

It wasn't dogshit. In fact none of the mechanics in Eternal were dogshit. Everything was balanced perfectly and you wouldn't run out of anything if you played correctly.

So far I'd say Dark Ages is a downgrade compared to Eternal. Not bad by any means but it feels like a less confident game. My opinion could change but that's how I'm feeling right now.

GOTY contender for me if this keeps up. Starts a bit slow but once it gets going it has a great combat loop.

Most definitely this is Doom.

This is pretty much what I came here to say.

I'm on chapter 4 so far and it just doesn't feel as fun, not bad though. Music is good/okay but at the same time very forgettable, total opposite to 2016 and Eternal. You'd get pumped every time you were in a battle, it was a whole thing. I hope there are better or more memorable tracks later

Also the scrambling run up the walls thing is nauseating lol

Is this in same vein that 90% of the fights are stepping into 'arenas' or initiating hordes or are the enemies already there in the levels?
"Yes"

Yes there are arenas
Yes there are interior/corridor sections
Yes sometimes enemies spawn in
Yes sometimes they're already there

Yes it is fun as fuck
