Doom: The Dark Ages |OT| Mod City

Gibbage.

Finished chapter 2. Upgraded the shield a couple of times and the shotgun now has burning applied, which is kind of ironic. Loving the combat.

This is a good example of the gameplay loop by chapter 5 or 6.

This is a leader demon and you can't attack him until you kill enough demons to lower his morale. This guy playing is pretty fucking good and plays with precision and intent, when I played it I was spamming all sorts of guns and flying around with shield dashes. :messenger_grinning_sweat:

This sounds great tbh and looks like a lot of fun. Maybe they need to make Hexen next. If there weren't difficult enemies you'd hear "bullet sponge" all the time.

So I gotta ask...

have we gotten any amazing gameplay clips from journo's? A repeat of the 2016 classic clip showing off journalist skillzTM

Oh man... the discourse surrounding this game is going to be even more toxic than Eternal.

How so? Seems like a great game to me.

Sure you'll have Eternal fanatics claiming its the worst thing since Putins birth but its a decent game which ever way you cut it.

Steam forums and comments on the Asmongold video he uploaded. People are shitting on it hard calling it simon says with parries.

We had 2016 fanatics doing the exact same thing with Eternal. Enjoy this go around.
agreed never got why those doom 2016 fanatics hated on super mario doom 64

Simon Says with parries lol. So I guess the same people commenting that didn't like Stellar Blade- oh wait...

After watching a bunch of extended gameplay videos of different levels, my fears about the game triggered by the previews seem to have been unfounded. The story and characters still look fucking garbage but the art direction and gameplay look fantastic. Very much looking forward to playing this tomorrow.

The Titan shit looks horrific though. Like a forced vehicle or turret section in a 360 era game.

Well I caved. I need to see it for myself.

Pretty cool it unlocks tonight at 8PM EST. Here I was expecting to play later tomorrow.

Watching some gameplay. Running around on a big flat field filled with demons and... parrying?!
And this is the nonsense parrying meaning you can parry one color and not the other.
I don't know how I feel about parrying in an fps game. They try to reinvent fps and add mechanics too it. Good fps is just shooting and good level design
Half life 3 will save us.

Roach king was shitting on dark ages? Why?

Asmon wasn't shitting on it. He said it was a 7/10 and thinks Space Marine 2 is way better (the games are not comparable at all). He's just a casual with passing interest, like he is with most things these days.

Dark ages look like a much better game than sm2 tbh.

At least it is not made with coop in mind and you don't have to constantly take chip damage from minions if you are skilled enough.

It would be like someone saying Control is better than Doom Eternal. Like, ok? That's an opinion, sure. But there isn't much value in that.

Hearing his thoughts on how Dark Ages compares to Eternal or even 2016 would be interesting, but I doubt he's played those for more than a couple hours at most.

Yeah he doesn't strike to me as a doom enjoyer.

Why would anyone listen to that dude's opinions on games is beyond me. He himself admited to be a shit eater with no idea about games because he spent way too many years stuck on the WoW mines. I guess popularity breeds credibility.

DOOM fans can be pretty awful. But it's understandable that people have their favorites and there's nothing wrong with that.

I personally never understood people saying any of the iterations are shit, it's wild to me. They're all great games, and honestly pretty different in their own way, so I can understand why some people prefer one over the other. I loved the pacing of Eternal and its combat, but I loved that 2016 didn't get too crazy with lore and everything. So it's tone just felt more true to OG DOOM in a lot of ways. I also loved that it had more content, multiplayer, snap map, etc.

Dark Ages has felt fun, and I've really enjoyed it. In a lot of ways you'll find yourself doing a similar dance like you would in Eternal. It's not EXACT of course as there's new mechanics and weapons, but the end result is pretty similar. It can get pretty fun, fast, and chaotic. Especially on higher difficulties. Almost at the half way point right now, and I'm still enjoying it quite a bit. More and more with each upgrade and new enemy introduced, honestly. I'm watching the cutscenes and taking it all in, can't say I care too much for the story, but I find it entertaining nonetheless.

Playing this, taking in the visuals, etc. It all makes me really hope that Quake is next. I'd love to see them revisit Quake properly with an awesome campaign AND multiplayer.

That's what I'm saying. It's so weird to me that people flock to his opinions so hard, especially when he talks about other games. To me he's only ever been a hardcore WoW player and that's it. Everyone I've known in IRL that is THAT deep into WoW, only really went that hard on WoW. They may dabble on other things, but it's certainly not to the same level. So I wouldn't really go to them to ask them about a new DOOM game, Battlefield, etc. Lol.

1. Steam forums are trash and nobody should spend a single second there. They are toxic and unproductive so is best to ignore it

2. As for Asmongold, this person is clearly someone with mental issues and the same goes for his followers. So taking any of their opinions seriously is not a good idea either

What I do see, is fans of the game complaining in reddit, saying that Eternal was better. That being said most people are enjoying the game and it seems to me like its just a loud minority

My prediction is that this game will sell really well and its going to be praised by most people in the following weeks

Parasocialism at work. The bigger the cult the stronger the influence. All Vampires have their Thralls.

You all couldn't get good sadly
Exactly lmao. I never got the complaints about Eternal. The story is skippable, the platforming sections are like 5% of the game compared to the other 95% that's amazing action. Also the game doesn't "force" the player to use specific weapons, it's just that there against certain enemies there are weapons that work better than other, which already happened in the original DOOM game.

All Vampires have their Thralls.
A better analogy wouldn't be possible lol.

Still very much enjoying this. Was worried the mecha and dragon sections would be the low points of the game but so far they were more just novelties to change things up (Although the initial dragon stage was very long). They're not great but I appreciate developers taking chances on "videogame stuff" you'd see in attempted in older times. Only part I'm not sure keen on is the Halo Infinite chapters where you're just running around a big open map and fighting the same mini-boss over and over in different corners. Really time consuming to do those and find secrets, especially if you're the type who wants to fill out all the fog of war on the map too. =P I do kinda think the weapon selection could be better. They have their uses but so far it does feel like I just have shotguns and several similar rapidfire guns. The chainshot is totally new but I'd rather stick with the DBS for damage. I def need some explosive weaponry. =P

Regarding your Quake comment, I really, really hope that they can use that series reboot as a way to circle back to where Doom had been headed and Quake 1 ended up. Menacing, claustrophobic atmosphere and a feeling of being trapped in some surreal labyrinth.

Doom has gone all in on the silly cartoon thing so I hope if they do Quake, we can get a modern take on the darkness and claustrophobia of Quake 1, Doom 64, PS1 Doom as a juxtaposition.

Yes. But only because we care.
True, I mean, I'm a hardcore fan myself. DOOM and Wolfenstein 3D are what made me love FPS games ever since I first played them as a kid. I'm just not a big fan of communities becoming SO negative and toxic, lol. DOOM has at least strayed from that a bit over the years, while still being made up of those who care.

I'm just really curious to see what id does next.

Agreed. That's the thing I'm REALLY curious about, is what they'll do to distinguish new Quake from new DOOM. The look, the vibe, the gameplay, etc.

It can't feel like a new DOOM re-skin, it has to feel like its own thing. So, assuming it'll happen in due time, I'm just really curious to know what they'll do to make it stand on its own two feet.

So, that was something I was originally really worried about. The sections where you're doing other things other than running and gunning, and honestly it hasn't been that bad IMO. The turret, Atlan, and dragon sequences aren't extremely plentiful, so before you know it you're running and gunning again. They do kind of break up the flow a bit, and when you're doing it you're kind of just thinking about when you'll be running and gunning again. At least I was. But the combat and gameplay is so much fun that the "issues" I have feel like a drop in a bucket.

I'd love to see them double down on the rust and steel and brutalist looking architecture thing. Due to tech limitations or not, it's eerie in Quake 1. Double down on the primitive, mechanical feel of the weapons and the surreal enemy designs. I always thought they were Silent Hill/Jacob's Ladder adjacent. Like imagine something like the industrial decay elements of SH2 Remake, the rust and steel, mixed in with how nasty the Quake 1 OST was and all. Oh boy I'm getting myself hard.

Wholeheartedly agree. Quake to me (the first one of course) just had this futuristic vibe that was weighed down by grit and dirt. So an idea of dirty, dark, and dank environments most certainly fit the whole Lovecraftian vibe it had/has. A strong sense of immersion, isolation, and fear. There are moments in The Dark Ages where I can imagine seeing something similar in a new Quake and it keeps me so hyped. I feel like they absolutely have to be revisiting Quake and internally, if not next. I mean, the last Quake game was Champions and that was co-developed with Saber. I just want a new 100% in-house id Quake game.

Played through 10 chapters on Ultra Violence at 120% game speed. Using both K/M and controller.

I think this is a pretty good game overall, but compared to 2016 and Eternal it is a downgrade. The story, music, and level designs are definite downgrades. The gameplay on the other hand improved about an hour or two in, but overall the loop doesn't feel as rewarding as older entries and can be frustrating. At times there are so many enemies on screen that you get bombarded with projectiles from all directions. I find myself constantly low on health, despite taking advantage of all the mechanics to restore it by playing aggressive when I'm not having to hold block or parry. You will clear a mob of 40 enemies but there are 5 stragglers running around causing chip damage to you at the end of an encounter. The most frustrating is clearing 2/3 of an encounter thinking you completed all of it, moving on to a different part of the map, and then having to completely restart the encounter with potentially lower health / lives when you stumble back on it all because you did not take out the few passive minions lingering around the arena. Weapon swapping is way too slow (mode swapping speed seems fine).

I can't help but feel like this was cobbled together quickly. Seems like a lot of sounds and enemy designs / animations were recycled from Eternal.

edit: to clarify I am having fun with the game and think that if you enjoyed the other two entries you will probably like this. You may just not like it as much.

Honestly, I was kind of feeling that way with all of the invisible walls I've come across. I'm sure there were some in 2016 and Eternal that I can't remember at the moment, but I've come across SO many in TDA.

I'm still really enjoying the game though. I'll have to wait until I beat it to see where I place it. But right now it does kind of look like it'll be 2016 -> Eternal -> TDA, but that is by no means a bad thing. I most certainly think the game is worth checking out if you're a DOOM fan and a fan of the new iterations.

It does feel a little rough around the edges at times. Also cut corners like no Fortress of Doom? Wut...

I've seen people wondering if this is a B team game. Maybe there's some truth to that.

From what I have seen, feels more like early access roughness.

Some encounters are more satisfying than others.

I imagine its a patch or two away from its potential.
