Dragon Age: Veilguard |OT| 'Oof': A non-buynary return to form

The combat is opening up as I upgrade my skills, gears, weapons, armor and merchants. Really cool to see this level of synergy this early on in the campaign.

About to hit level 20 and that should open up the specialization skill tree. Excited to unlock some new ultimate powers.

OK to those who know about Frostbyte and the tech side of it: how hard is it to mod a face on Neve so she doesn't look like Abed from Community, and more like her voice and motion actress from True Blood? (aka hot).

Like, I dig Neve's personality, but shit son: that's a grim grill if ever I seen one: save me Lovers Lab, you're my only hope 😂😂 (Nexus won't allow anything on this game apparently, weird stance when Skyrim and Fallout have snuff porn factories with hucow milking facilities built in 👍🏻 ).
While Nexus has gotten a bit extreme since a few years ago. People are still allowed to make existing characters better like the top rated as well as most downloaded mods for Silent Hill 2 remake are mods that makes Angela and Maria better. So you still good. Just gonna wait a bit for modders to mod the characters.

The people running Nexus are gatekeeping mods at this point. It’s even turned me off to the site, minus fixes and decent visual enhancements.

Maybe I come off as petty, but it’s one of many things going on in entertainment mediums that that are causing me to take a step back and contemplate what I content I want to take in.

The game is completely crushing my cpu now. It holds 60 fps unlike other poorly optimized games, but it comes at the cost of temps and wattage. 150 watts consistently and 80 degrees. It’s crashed my PC twice now and I’m pretty sure it is because of the cpu temps.

I even turned off ray tracing and it did nothing. I might have to turn the game down to 40 fps because the last thing i want to do is burn my cpu.

My 5600x is sitting at 100% usage in 1440p, first time I see a game using my cpu that much

It's sitting at 3.6 user score from 4000 reviews. Most people think it's shit. Stop kidding yourself lmao.
On what? Metacritic? Thanks for the laugh. Any twat can leave a 1/10 review and screech about whatever hurts their feelings without even playing the game for a single second. On platforms that you have to actually buy the game, it's 75% on Steam, 4.5/5 on PSN, and 4.1/5 on Xbox. It's not amazing, but most people don't hate it.

Corporate platforms are no better than rotten tomatoes. Thanks for the laugh. Review bombing, if it even exists for this game, is engaged from both sides. There are as many 10/10 reviews as 1/10s.

Ah yes, steam reviews, the most corporate controlled opinions as opposed to targeted hate on MC from ppl who never played the game. You cannot genuinely think MC are more accurate than steam ones, right? Its fine if you dismiss all user scores but to say MC is more accurate than steam is quite dumb my guy and you know it.

Game is really good. I kinda wish this thread wasn't polluted by people who don't actually have it and just want to let out their political rage.

The environments are really well made and feel fun to explore. The graphics are top notch as well.

The loot system is kinda smart as you basically collect specific items and just upgrade them, so each item is intended to support a particular build rather than collecting hundreds of items with slightly different randomized stats (like in Diablo). Your build is items + abilities + companion skills.

Dialog is actually well written and characters are very well developed. Yes it has a bit of a Disney/marvel feel to it. Story is keeping me very engaged.

Combat has no business being this good for an RPG.

Overall a 9+ for me. There is clearly so much love put into this game, its characters and story, and it's polished and beautiful as hell. Just sad that people may not get to experience it because of dumb politics or people being overly close minded and entrenched in needing to "fight" against anything remotely "woke" (in 12 hours of play I had exactly 1 instance of anything remotely related to gender identity - people see 2 clips on YouTube and think the whole game is like that).

No it's not. Any game that you like getting bad reviews isn't 'reciew bombing'. Clowns review games 10/10 all the time, positive review bombing. It kinda evens out.

"Positive review bombing" LMAO
It's fascinating how imaginative some of you can be to justify their hate about a game. Even if the game fails, you won't be happier in your life and you won't be richer.

75% steam rating is similar to mine. its a decent game, but not a good RPG. The director said that they didnt want to make it open world like Andromeda and yet the bloat is still there. so many side quests feature basic go kill mobs quest design. There is no story or lore behind it. Its actually worse than Andromeda in that sense which had some pretty fun side quests for each region. Like why would I care about some beggar's plight? i just want my XP and thats it. Im already skipping dialogue for most of these side quests. At least let me punch the beggar. Like, hey you fuck face, stop doing heroine and get your shit together.

That said, the combat is a lot of fun and where the RPG elements come in. Lots to specialize in for both you and your companions. I love how your gear can automatically upgrade as a quest reward. I love that exploring rewards you with higher tier gear you already have equipped. its loot done right. One of the things Anthem did really well was loot (aside from the trash legendary drop rate) and i am really pleased with all the different systems in place here. i really like just playing this game. very few single player games like this.

I dont think i will ever get over how milquetoast your character is designed to be. In fact, pretty much everyone aside from Lucanis is laid back with no real urgency. Maybe thats what all gen z and millenials are like in real life, but this isnt U.S.A Age 2024, it's fucking dragon age, i want to play as badasses, not myself.

Damn, mine sits at 50% but the wattage indicates its closed to being maxed out. Ive seen it go up to 180 watts during shader compilations in various games when the cpu load hits 100%, so even if its only using 50% of the threads and cores, it must be taxing them pretty hard.

i do have to wonder if its bug. there is not much going on here in terms of physics and NPCs. they just stand there doing nothing. at least dragons dogma NPCs were walking around and could take part in dragon battles inside city walls. you could be in a dungeon with no enemies or NPCs, and my cpu wattage would be 150. in most other games, it tops out at 70 watts in big citiies. this feels like a bug.

Decided to give this one a go.

I don't expect much, especially coming from Inquisition (not to mention other and modern things "we all love" in our video games these days) which was trash in pretty much every way except a few characters I really liked, the visuals (environments) and the story - still boggles the mind that it got GOTY while just a few months later came an absolute killer of an RPG in pretty much every way, which absolutely destroyed Inquisition. But this time around DA came a year+ later...

Anyway, if I'll think that it'll be worth it to talk about this game proper after I played it enough and in the way I usually do it here,... let's just say that there's going to be a.... POST.

2014 was an absolute god awful year for GOTYs. Lots and lots of flawed games that did not deserve to win GOTY but no one came in and stepped up either. AC Unity. Good but buggy. Watch Dogs. Good, but not great. Also downgraded. Destiny, good but flawed as fucking fuck. Bayonetta 2. Good but not GOTY material.

Inquisition was mid as fuck but it won by default because everything else was flawed. Had Bloodborne, Batman AK and Witcher 3 not been delayed, they wouldve easily won goty over inquisition.

These people will end Art.
It seems like anything related to Taash is trash while everything else is pretty normal. Best to just skip/avoid anything related to the character. The other companions have nothing woke related to them which means it was some idiot who was given green light for this char only.

If you skip her character you are apparently locked out of best ending.

10 hours in and the game is not woke. or trans. or whatever. its just one character, and one questline and you can skip all of their dialogues.

if anything, its biggest issue is that its too bland. but not woke.

Skip the dialogue then. I already do that with all the town/city center side quests anyway.

You can skip her through out the game. I unlocked Darwin a while ago and havent seen him since. You pick your party before every mission.

Is the dialogue generally bad and/or Marvel-esque? It must be pretty awful because it sounds like you've been skipping a ton of it?

I only watched streams of the game and I would put it at 6/10

I would not be able to play it myself without getting bored.

Introduce new tanky enemy. Re use enemy 10 minutes later.

Now add two of the same enemy.

Now add the tanky enemy to each cluster fuck constantly.

it isnt bad. just bland. its not marvel-esque either. no jokes. there is one character who is kinda quirky but no different from some characters in past ME games.

tone is fine.

bland is the inevitable result of woke. You can't really have any interesting or edgy stuff because it all needs to be safe enough to not offend anyone.

It’s perfectly possible to address things like gay/trans/etc and not do it in a hamfisted way. BG3 does just fine on that front. You can change pronouns, it has a prominent gay couple, and one character referenced is quite clearly trans. The difference between this game and BG3 is the quality of the writing itself. Even Inquisition had a trans character in it that was handled in a far more subtle way. And that game still have all the offensive tropes associated with Dragon Age such as racism and the ability to be an asshole.

For the people playing the game:

Do enemies have ragdoll when they die or they use precanned death animations? (Already asked elsewhere but the user wasn't sure)

Does the game has even a little bit of challenge on max difficulty?

I'm not asking for gimme the god of war mode but no challenge would absolutely make loot, skills and progression completely worthless where in an hard game you smile even for that 3% more damage upgrade becsuse you die hundreds of times.

After reading more impressions i decided to give this game a shot on thursday when my Pro comes. The Pro footage looked much better than the base PS5 in Performance mode, even tho the video quality wasnt the best

I haven't encountered the *problematic* character yet, she's next on the agenda. But honestly I'm already mostly ignoring some companions because there's plenty and they all have quests, gear, upgrades, talents to work on and trying to worry about them all sounds exhausting. I think you'd have a perfectly fine experience with the game just focusing on your favorite few companions and only interact with the others where necessary for the main story.

Im playin on Nightmare and its not that hard. There were 2 bosses that i died 10 times or more tho. Compared to Origins nightmare, its a cakewalk. Id say its on par with Inquisition nightmare if you played it.

Why are ragdolls so important? You can look at any gameplay and see for urself

I need my visual variety in a game where i kill thousands of mofos, and i absolutely despise precanned death animations, they are a huge turnoff in any game where i kill stuff.

I never played past da games, any other famous action rpg you can use as example? The game being too easy is an even bigger turnoff.

Youre prolly gonna feel lost playing it without having played inquisition at the very least since its a direct sequel, tho i guess u can pick up in the story lore quickly if u must.

You got a weird ick about ragdolls but i aint judging, its best to see 4 urself on vids imo.

As for difficulty....hmmmmmm, easier than god of war ragnarok on highest difficulty if that helps. Its hard to say cuz again delends on you how u perceive it but enemies and bosses are hp sponges to the max and bosses require some good dodging skills, u cant just stand still and spam spells. Id say the game is hard but not sweat inducing on nightmare.

Yeah, I'm looking forward to seeing the boost when I switch over to playing it on Pro on Thursday for sure. It already looks very solid to me--I settled on performance mode after switching back and forth between that and fidelity. Resolution takes a hit in performance mode, but it's not that bad on my TV/viewing distance (8-9 feet from a 65" Sony X93L), but it will be nice to get a boost there. Frame rate already seems solid to me--but I'm using VRR so hard to tell anyway.

If you dont care about very minor spoilers, heres me fighting against a side quest boss:

timestamped 3:36:46 if link doesnt take u there directly.

should give you a rough idea how the combat is and whatnot.

and if you dont see me using the ugly UI, its because i have all my companions skills keybinded.
