Final Fantasy XV Demo Previews/Impressions Thread

Wow man that chocobo ranch looks great. I love that there's still a lot of stuff we haven't seen yet

The one thing I really want them to fix is the lock-on mechanic. It doesn't seem to lock-on well enough and a lot of the time Noctis looks like he's just randomly using his sword in hopes that he'll eventually hit something. The way they're presenting the combat makes it seem super clunky.

Woah, you seem to be getting defensive. This is my most anticipated game of all time. I'm just having issues with this particular aspect of the combat.

Asking for a better lock-on is not asking for it to be "more automated," just more reliable and less clunky-looking.

Lock-on is a button press. Think like Zelda. You can slash randomly our lock-on to a single enemy.

Generally your opener is lock-on>warpstrike.

Still reading through the thread, so apologies if this has been mentioned/answered already... do we have any indication when Type-0 will come up for preorder on PSN?

I'll be honest, I'm asking mostly out of fear It's already been added to the store and I just haven't been able to find it!

Yay, another "defensive" argument...

You said Noctis kept missing attacks, that's not lock-on, that is about tracking the attack, or, in other words, automatically positioning yourself.

But don't worry, I don't feel "defensive" at all, I already accepted that they will listen to this stuff and butcher the battle system entirely.

I'm sure it will be a little rough based on the reviews... but damn if it doesn't still look fantastic. I can not wait!!

Brings back memories of buying DQVIII for that FFXII demo. I'll be honest -- DQVIII was a bit of an afterthought for me going in. But I came to love that game like no other, especially because of it's soundtrack.

I hope I come out of this loving FFT0HD the same way (err, though I'm not holding it to that same level, that's hard to match :p)

I'll definitely be playing whilst using lock-on. My question is, why has all the Duscae footage consisted of the players/devs avoiding it? Because in my eyes it makes the combat seem clunky when I know it has the potential to look flashy and amazing. It does, except when I see footage of Noctis aimlessly running around and bumping into enemies and hitting nothing during combat. Strange form of advertisement, IMO.

SE NA's new press post with the demo's backstory:

Backstory
When you've spent your entire life looking out at the serrated city skyline, it's easy to lose yourself in the sprawling Duscaen landscape. The prince and his retinue were halfway to Cauthess when their daydreams came to a sudden, screeching halt—the Regalia's last gasp before giving out to the unpaved backroads.

Now they were truly lost in the landscape: broken down by the side of the road with the Disc well out of walking distance. The Archaean, Titan, would have to wait. He'd been dormant for ages anyway. The first order of business was getting back on four wheels.

What do they mean with

Sounds really promising from those previews. I'm not used anymore to Final Fantasy (or anything Square japan made) to sound promsing.

I'm just worried about the framerate. I've seen several preview mention it has some severe framerate issues. I hope it's just lack of optimisation at this point, and the screenshots I've seen really don't look like anything that should be pushing the hardware that much. But if they can't solve those issues I hope they dowgrade the resolution and/or graphics until they run at locked (or nearly locked) 30 fps

Please say it ain't so. And is it really that hard to first make sure that framerate is stable and the build around that? Serious question, I have no idea how that works..

See that's what I don't get. What use are gorgeous surroundings when the downside are framerate drops?

Frame rate is always one of the last things to be stabilized in game development. When I worked on games, they usually ran at about 8-10 FPS until right near the end.

The previews sound incredibly promising. This really made my day... Final Fantasy is back?

The technical stuff I'm not too concerned with since the game is pretty far out still.

Oh boy. I really don't want to blow $60 on Type 0 because I know I won't play it, but I really want to try the demo out.
Do you guys think there's any chance people would sell their codes on eBay?

Just get out the thread. People here clearly don't know what they want. Not worth reading through.

Unfortunately I feel that's the issue with most final fantasy fans. Most don't know what they want and will only try to find flaws/ complain how it's not like what they are used to

Am I not allowed to find one thing that bothers me? That's literally the one thing that's bothering me from a gameplay standpoint. My only other complaint is that the quality of the dialogue seems to have weakened since E3 2013, which is unfortunate. Otherwise, the game seems absolutely phenomenal.

No you are. To me this just seems to be an issue with fans in general no matter what game lol. But literally an impression likened the open world to Skyrim. Someone in this thread didn't associate well with that comparison.

It's just people will see stuff like that and form an opinion on the complete game. You got people who don't like the fact this game has real time combat.

That's been a thing for quite a while now.

I'd love to just ignore this, but reading this stuff and knowing that chances are extremely high that they'll just listen to this kind of feedback and change the gameplay bothers me (heck, Tabata straight up said they'd change the core part of the battle system if people didn't like). I wish they'd just pay attention to the fact that players have no idea what they want...

Who knows, maybe if I keep posting everywhere nonstop someone will read that the game is fine and tone down the changes based on "feedback" (it won't happen).

Surprised no one is talking about the new screenshots. The ones we got from SE UK don't have the logo stuff on them.

I think it'd have to be a pretty substantial universal hatred of something to get a core element of the gameplay changed to be honest. Thus far with all the previews there hasn't really been too much negative about the battle system so I think you're safe.

I will be so disappointed if ffxv feels more like a western rpg than jprg. I love western rpg but common don't do it, make this is a final fantasy game not the next elder scrolls

If I saw the right ones, there's nothing really new, is there?

They look good though.

I noticed that the aliasing problem is happening mostly on stuff like fences and whatnot.

You say that like you don't know the FF fanbase.

People will complain no matter what kind of battle system they make. And it's a damn shame, they had some amazing ideas for this battle system (just look at those videos!).

Wasn't FFXIII supposed to be more action oriented but they changed it back because of fan whining?

Well, at least in my eyes, the game seems very much like a Final Fantasy game. And I'm all for the real-time combat. *shrugs*

The only complaints that irritate me are the ones in regard to the framerate-- this is Square Enix, and this is a mainline Final Fantasy title. I'll be damned if FFXV isn't one of the most polished game out there by the time of its actual release.

This is sounding good. A demo doesn't really matter too much but they better deal with the tech issues by the time the real game comes out. Seeing that they won't even commit to a release window yet, I'm not worried.

Buddies! trailer from Pax presentation

That short time showing Ignis fight makes me want to play as him. :(

Sounds like you want something like slide dash from KH, not really the lock-on's problem. I'm hopeful that you can edit your combo enough so that you can sling yourself to the opponent in the beginning of your combo. You can always just warp to them anyways.

I'm kinda okay with it being a soft lock-on instead of a hard one, I messed around with the settings in KH1 and had a play through like that and it wasn't too bad. I just want it back to the gold lock-on instead of this current one.

Yeah, that's very true I suppose. Hopefully they just stay the course. I know the only feedback I am going to post is the importance of getting the framerate steady by launch, even if it means delays. But that'll already happen regardless of my feedback.

So I have been waiting and waiting and waiting ever since I first saw the game to make up my mind about it, and gave it every chance in the world I could, but I think I have seen enough to...well to at least complain about it and have a little rant. The style and characters of this game just never appealed to me from the get go, they haven't improved, and the setting is love/hate, with more hate than love, from what I have seen so far. There's zero charm or personality in any of them. It's a bunch of bad Squall clones running around I just can't see myself ever caring for any of them, and would spent more time playing the game pulling for the enemy. I would have liked Noctis a lot more if he was just the little boy from the trailer throughout the entire game. Square went from one extreme to the other with their clothing, from ridiculous to the point of embarrassing over the top craziness...to incredibly boring and plain. But at least the prior made me feel something. These leave me numb. The worst part is that in that demo it looks like they're fighting FF-like creatures in a field that looks more like the Vanishing of Ethan Carter. And I didn't say Skyrim or The Witcher, because even those games actually have a more interesting "fantasy-looking" outdoors than that demo, which is the total opposite from the artistic environments that should permeate every area in an FF game. Square were one of the best at designing fantastic environments in the 2D era, but ever since they moved FF to 3D, especially with this latest version, they have failed to recapture that in 3D for the majority of what they have shown us. Maybe they should take a look at Bungie and their artists for Destiny, because the environments in that game are an example of how to translate fantastic 2D art to 3D the right way. I liked the original E3 trailer but ever since then, everything they've released looks more and more like a sequel to FFXI, which I would be more ok with if this was an mmorpg.

It just doesn't look or feel like FF to me. I wanted to see more of this:

And less of everything else that's been posted in the OP and has been released since that original trailer. Heck I'd prefer it 1000 more if instead of this game, Square just continued building on the Luminos tech demo. And based on the lukewarm impressions of the previews, this could end up like every other game that took 10+ years to develop....

Phew...I really wanted to get that off my chest and now I really want to finish my FF7 re-run because modern FF is looking almost dead to me. And it doesn't help this game at all that I just finished the Sleeping Forrest and the City of Angels section, which is just so full of atmosphere, intrigue, ominous fright,... before looking at these environments. What the hell happened?

I actually don't know, I've never followed XIII as much as I've followed Versus.

FFXIII-2 however is a game basically made by fans (literally get a list of complaints you had with the first game, and you can check that all of those complaints were addressed in the second one). Oddly enough, I think the battle system remained unchanged from the first game (with just some more elements and a toned down difficulty, because people complained about that).

How it was originally I wouldn't know.

Yeah, that's very true I suppose. Hopefully they just stay the course. I know the only feedback I am going to post is the importance of getting the framerate steady by launch, even if it means delays. But that'll already happen regardless of my feedback.
Hopefully people get bothered enough about the framerate that they forget about the battle system, so they get less complaints on the gameplay stuff =P

edit: or I hope we get more of the stuff in the post above, hopefully they read that, ignore it and we can keep the actually good gameplay.

Something something *fantasy based in reality* tag that has been used since the game was announced. Also, you post that picture of Accordo like it still isn't in the game. I'm not seeing lukewarm impressions of the previews either. I'm seeing some concern due to technical issues, but for the most part the previews seem very favorable.

You are, however, proving to me that threelights is right.

As far as the game looking "boring and bland" based on one part of one area do me a favor. You're playing FFVII right? Go back to Kalm. Take a screenshot of the area around there. Boring grasslands. Would that be a fair indicator of the rest of the world that the game takes place in?

it feels totally different than any Final Fantasy before it, more akin to Skyrim or Far Cry than any JRPG we've seen to date

Would have preferred a Xenoblade or GTAV comparison, that's not encouraging.
