Details:
Fullmetal Alchemist - Brotherhood is a brand new animated series based on the popular manga of the same title. It is a reboot of the previous animated series, aiming to follow the original manga's storyline more closely. As the manga is expected to end within a year, the anime series aims to conclude as close to the end of the manga's serialization run as possible. While it will be more of a manga adaptation than the previous series, it should be noted that there will still be original material exclusive to the anime to keep events fresh for at least the first part of the series. For example, the anime original character Isaac is created and designed by the manga author herself, based on a specific request from the anime director.

I think that about sums it up - and it's in the OP.

Read the first volume of the manga; really liked it.
Watched the first episode of the series (dubbed); was appalled by how bad it was.
Just seen the first episode of the reboot; am quite impressed.

I'll definitely keep following if it remains this good...

Appalled by the show or the dub?

Well, the show in general, but let's just say the dub didn't help in the slightest.
I'm sure it probably gets better farther into the series, but I certainly wasn't in a hurry to watch any more.

So I keep on hearing about how FMA is such a great show and I want to jump in. Since this is supposed to be a reboot should I watch? I mean I only ever loved one anime and that was Cowboy Bebop. I tried to watch Trigun and I didn't really get into it.

Will this do it for me or do I keep walking?

Not sure. How tall are you and what colour is your urine?

I find that strange since the first episode of the first anime was very similar to the first chapter of the manga.

I'm really liking this. I watched the first FMA (which was the last anime I watched), and I've been following the manga as well. I can't wait to see some of that stuff animated, so many great moments. This episode was just full on fanservice, though I'll agree it would be pretty confusing for someone new to FMA.

Out of the changed VAs, Roy's is the only one that gets to me, but I figure I'll get used to it in time.

Since this is the first available official video available I'll be the guinea pig about Madman's stream which will most likely be used for every other site streaming it.

- quality is excellent for a stream, practically the same as the 1280x720 raw/fansubs floating around with the usual hiccups that a stream will naturally contain i.e. soft spots and image compression issues. On that note you can watch this fullscreen without any hassles.
- so nice to watch it without scrolling advertisements and TV station watermarks!
- no English karaoke subs for the OPs or EDs so if that is your thing then grab a tissue.
- my suspicions are unwarranted for my own reasons; official subs are not same as fansub subs :lol

I'm still undecided about it. I certainly enjoy the OP itself and the animation cues it takes from the beats and song breaks in between (because I am a sucker of timed rhythm in visual & audio cues), especially when it gets more frantic paced. But there's something niggling in the back of my head about the song itself.. maybe it is Yui herself.

Wow the stream is pretty damn good, awesome that Funimation is doing this. Hopefully this keeps fansubs from cutting into their business, because this is the kind of thing that totally destroys any justification from the fansubbers.

I agree. I will help them gain ad revenue if possible.

needs to show more effort.
Definitely good to see legimate business has finally caught up with putting out a timely quality product to fight fansubbing rather than relying on moral/legal arguments.

I think I'll wait on the funimation streams from now on.

Well, I just finished watching the first episode and I must say I enjoyed it. I like that it was all-new material, yet it reintroduces the basic elements of the series. The animation was beautiful to me, and the colors seemed more...I don't know, vibrant? They just seem brighter, maybe more colorful. It's different from the visuals of the first series, but I like it. I'm definitely looking forward to what will follow and I can't wait until it starts adapting the manga. I never got to read that far in, so this will be an interesting experience for me. And kudos to FUNimation for streaming this on their website.

Yeah times have changed for the better, as I said to a friend earlier tonight; at least a decade ago I was hard pressed to find an anime on VHS for rental, let alone a full series itself. Never dreamed at all that I'd have the ability to watch countless anime on the whim and still be able to watch an anime episode legitimately 4 days after it has aired in Japan.

The Funimation video page is getting hammered right now.

Yeah it is.

I wonder though if Funimation will actually release this on blu-ray since the show is being broadcast in HD?

Not unless they do a Japanese release first.

I know the Japanese broadcast had a commercial about the DVD release (in August for volume 1). I think it also mentioned Blu-ray, but I'm not 1000% sure on that.

Is it just me or does FUNi's translation feel a little awkward in places? It's like the dialogue is just a bit too...not quite "formal," exactly, but a little too proper. Like their translation of itadakimasu as "I graciously accept this meal." Yes, that is a perfectly valid translation of the phrase, but that's not what Ed would say, and the enthusiasm in his voice doesn't fit that either. There are a few things like that in their subs that don't really read like real conversation.

That's just a nitpick, though. The quality on this stream is quite nice, and aside from some lines feeling a bit stilted like I said, the subs are well done.

Good work, FUNi.

Considering the turnaround time it could be an in house translation from Bones.... but then why the 5 day delay? Perhaps FMA got a quickie/rough translation from Funimation due to the small turnaround?

The US isn't the only country getting English subs though.

I'd like to know that myself. If somebody could check against Madman's subs in Australia, we'd probably be able to find out.
