there haven't been anything good since 2004

Depends on what you like. Original, creative anime? Then probably not.

But hey, if you like cliche romance/harem anime... ehhhhh fuggitaboutit!

Kemonozume, Kaiba, Dennou Coil, Gurren-Lagann, Casshern Sins and Mononoke were all pretty brilliant.

There is no such thing as creativity or originality. Such a judgement is nothing but an illusion of novelty.

Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann would like a word with you.

But yeah, anime of the year 2009 right here. Will probably end up being my favorite of all-time or just under TTGL is it's executed as flawlessly as the opening implies.

Dead

well not really...yet
MMmm, so much Nostalgia watching this :D

A good re-introduction episode, can't wait for the rest :)

Bastards playing up the Hughes angle. Dont do this to me again. That scene with him and his wife having a late night chat. Don't want to go through it again...

Interested to see what this adaption is going to skip and then link in with. Seems like it's still going to do Lior at least?

I have a feeling the new series is going to be moving MUCH faster than expected. We'll know for sure when the Newtype summaries show up this week, but generally I expect that Greed will be showing up by ep14.

Haven't you heard? Unless the animation is top of the class and fluid like water, it doesn't deserve recognition from 7Th.

/sigh I still don't like Roy's new VA choice. :/

Otherwise the episode was good. Great seeing it in HD.

Shouldn't he be showing up BEFORE episode 14? I mean, they should have a new opening theme by then, right?

I just didn't want to extend the list to unnecessary lengths.

-sigh- Such memories. I've never read any of the manga's so I'm really looking forward to seeing all of this.

Is Funi offering an option to dl from their site rather than stream? I'd rather watch by streaming from my laptop to PS3.

I highly doubt it. However, I'm sure the usual workarounds are possible.

So does this mean
they're gonna rename the Homonculi to their original manga names?
Well,
There was only one homunculus that had a different name in the manga. Two of the homunculus were completely different :p

Fuck that was awesome!!!

I don't read the manga.... nor I finished the original series. No clue why. But... I am glad I did. Now I will be able to enjoy this 100%

Huh?

You don't read the manga, nor did you finish the original series?

I could maybe understand where you were coming from with regards to the manga (you'd rather experience all the content for the first time animated), but the first anime series diverges from the manga around the halfway point, so it shouldn't have any impact on your enjoyment of this series.

I dunno, without doing either of the earlier series, he might not spend as much time comparing this one to the old ones. That could mark up the enjoyment a tad.

Oh man, the first episode was really badass. The only new VA that I didn't really like is Armstrong, but I guess I'll get used to it soon enough.

Armstrong has the same VA I believe.

Oh, and a big request to those using spoiler tags... could people please denote if they're spoiling something that is specific to the manga? I'm sure I'm not the only one that would really appreciate that heads up.

OP is awesome, first episode was pretty good, although I'm dying to see some darker episodes. Can't wait for the next episode.

But I wonder how they're going to manage the chronology; the first series went from the Lior episode, then back to the preceding events until it caught up with the Lior episode again, right? If next episode is analogous to the original series' second episode, I'm guessing that means we won't see the events in Lior until a much later episode, even after Ed becomes a state alchemist?

The animation was so nice. :O The ending and the opening are both quite nice as well. Watching this with Japanese voices is so weird; I want the American VAs so badly. >_< I've tried to substitute their voices in my head, but it doesn't work that well. I rather hope the next episode is of a more serious tone. Serious FMA > Wacky FMA.

I'll have to go back and check, but there didn't seem to be much of a noticeable score.

Roy sounds younger than Ed!
Yeah, that was a bit disjointing. Then again, all the voices are disjointing.

First episode was awesome! so glad to see FMA back I haven't watch any new anime since the original.

I know this has probably been asked, but where can I watch the first episode online subbed if I live in the US? Thanks :D.

highest quality option i mean :p

Funimation won't have it up until April 9 at 10:00 a.m. Don't inquire about illegal/questionable methods too much or duckroll may smite thee.

My only major gripe with the episode was the scene near the end when Al brings up how they had suspected Isaac had the Philosopher's Stone and Ed just says that they'll do better to leave all investigations to the pertinent authorities. You'd think Ed would be jumping out of bed, injury or no injury, to go scrounge around the alleys for a fragment of the Stone.

Now that you mention it, that is a bit out of character. I figure they just didn't want to spend much time on the Philosopher's Stone just yet.

i guess this new one is refreshing but i dont like how the animation turned out.... its less dark/serious.... :(
Yeah. :\ I just hope that it's only for the first episode to get new viewers. Though, it wasn't completely void of darkness.
Like when Bradley kills Issac.

I did, but it was my friendly reminder to those that might not have now that it started airing. Just me being overly OCD about this show is all.

The last series had very "wacky" episodes too; it's just part of the charm. Anyway I'm pretty sure it's gonna get much more dark as the story progresses; even the promotional posters seem to aim at a much serious tone than that of the original series.

May I ask people to still spoiler their impressions? Some of us are waiting for the FUNimation subs.

I really enjoyed it...though I don't know how it compares to the original one..as Nostalgia might kick in...or just because I haven't seen anything of this good quality (animation) in a while.

You can't expect everyone to spoiler mark their impressions, this is a discussion thread after all.

every spoiler is usually marked as so until official release. At least in every other discussion like Lost, BSG, House etc.

I really enjoyed that episode. But they sure do assume you have watched FMA before. I guess the next episode will be for newcomers...

Yeah, you are absolutely right.

I feel like I appreciated it more because I actually understood what was going on.
Newcomers must have been really confused.
