Is it just me or does FUNi's translation feel a little awkward in places? It's like the dialogue is just a bit too...not quite "formal," exactly, but a little too proper. Like their translation of itadakimasu as "I graciously accept this meal." Yes, that is a perfectly valid translation of the phrase, but that's not what Ed would say, and the enthusiasm in his voice doesn't fit that either. There are a few things like that in their subs that don't really read like real conversation.

That's just a nitpick, though. The quality on this stream is quite nice, and aside from some lines feeling a bit stilted like I said, the subs are well done.

Good work, FUNi.

It was a very literal translation, I agree, but it was pretty accurate as far as I could tell, which to be fair, isn't as great as some of you who have lived abroad.

Took me two hours to stream the entire ep from Funi's site this morning (9:20am - 11:20am) and I was pretty much comparing Funi's translation to the fan one and they were pretty much on point though Funi's felt way more formal, but at the same time it was more concise.

I'll probably try to watch it again tonight once I get home - hopefully the servers will be in better shape.

Don't know, but maybe Funimation wants to keep it in-house for now? It'd be nice if they put in on hulu to give their servers a break.

Is Funimation going to make the episodes available on Hulu or Youtube? I like that they're doing this but I don't think their servers alone are up to the task.

man I'm trying to watch it from work from several T3 lines and its still slow as fuck >

its been one hour and its only a little over 75%!!

So far tho, the episode is great!!

And I agree to a Hulu channel, a youtube one is too risky since itll be everywere in a matter of minutes(not that its not already).

Not unless they do a Japanese release first.

Vol1 of the JP DVD and Blu-ray release in August. Considering how Aniplex is trying to get the airing/streaming of the series to be worldwide, I won't be surprised if the disc releases are close too.

Just watched the premiere on Animax Asia. Some interesting differences between that and the FUNi/Madman subs:

- The script itself is pretty much the same, the timings are a little different.

- Kimbly -> Kimblee

- Ishbal -> Ishval

- About 2-3 lines were altered for some reason ("I do not think in such sophisticated terms" -> "I am a simple man")

- The OP and ED have English translations instead of just the romanji script

The original series were awesome per se!
I hope this is more than just a revamp of the old series (Like Neon Genesis Evangelion Renewal was).
I don't want just reanimated scenes, I want brand new stuff!

If you haven't seen at least the first episode yet, please do so. As stated in the OP, the storyline for FMA Brotherhood follows the manga storyline rather than what was presented in the first season. If you've read the manga, then you'd know that there are several differences between the manga storyline and that of the first season. Otherwise if you haven't read the manga, then there will be plenty of twists and turns that weren't present the first time around.

Its actually the "true" version, if you will. Its gonna follow the manga instead of doing its own thing.

That being said, I really really like the first series. Other than the fact it doesnt follow the manga, why so much hate?

The "hate" stems from the fact that the first anime kind of jumped the shark imho with the whole rosa baby trauma / europe crap.

The show is excellent, especially considering that they had to come up with their own storyline for the last half of it, but the manga storyline just completely blows it out of the water and makes it look tame by comparison.

Yeah, jimm. 'cept it wasn't that, it was
that she got raped that left her unable to speak

Anyways, watching the episode on FUN's site. I really like the intro song, which is kinda rare for me 'n anime.

Yeah....

and she couldn't talk because
She was gangraped and impregnated by soldiers (hence the baby)

After finishing the first one, I gotta say, the animation looked good, the music was excellent, characterization was right on, the story was fun.... all in all, great start.

Do want more.

Just saw episode 2.
It's pretty good, but it just doesn't have that emotional impact that episode 3 of the first series had. It was pretty fast.

When will they throw in those parts about Nina and Tucker, and the first meeting with Scar? :/ They rushed the exam, the first meeting with Hughes wasn't shown. Oh, and didn't they meet Armstrong after Lyor? How come they knew him in episode 1?

And I hope the music improves a bit. It's good, but not first series good.

I'm not surprise they're speeding up considering they do not want to bored the viewers the same thing they animated years ago.

Why go with red over pink?
and white over tanned?

To be fair the first series' music was exceptional and very few anime can compare.

Very true. I like the music so far, but I haven't seen Episode 2 yet. I will return later with impressions.

Their first meeting with Hughes was shown in episode one. They didn't rush the exam either. It was only about eight pages long in the manga. It went by pretty quickly in the manga too. It was as long as it was supposed to be.

Honestly, the white over tanned thing bothers me more. I mean, she's from a freakin' desert town, you'd figure that they'd be pretty tanned. The color of the hair doesn't really matter (the pink does look better...), but the skin change makes her look like a completely different person.

I'm not sure if she's ever been drawn in color, but in the manga she's given the same skin tone as all the other Amestris characters.

Yeah, I thought it was cool how the first anime addressed the racial overtones of the Ishballan conflict.

Good second episode, but I really have to wonder how someone who isn't already familiar with the series would react to these first two episodes. Seems pretty dense in terms of the amount of characters shown, and they're rocketing through the exposition so far.

As someone who is really only familiar with the first anime, I'm curious how many episodes it'll be until things are changed up significantly from what I'm used to.

Grzi said:

In the manga timeline, they encounter Tucker and Scar after Lior, and the whole Tucker/exam storyline isn't mixed like it was in the first series. Like B.K. said, the exam got about as much screentime as it should've, relative to the manga.

Another great episode. The pacing is pretty awesome so far, but I can kinda see how it might be a little confusing for people new to the series.

I suppose the pacing will remain tight since they'll have to squeeze in almost two chapters per episode. It should be great the whole way. So far so good. PEACE.

I don't see it being too confusing for those who are new. I'm sure things will pan out in the long run so when they look back they'll be like "oh yeeeeeah" sort of deal. Never reading the manga and only seeing the older anime, I'm liking the added touches they put in with ep. 2.

Yeah.. episode 2 was excellent.

I felt that it had more weight in terms of what happened to Ed and Al than the equivalent episode of the original series.

Watched it earlier this evening. Awesome once more! :D The pacing is certainly tight, as it has been said, but it's not hard to follow, and I think that we're in for one hell of a ride, especially those of us who have not read the manga (except for the first chapter).

My only complaint: the music. =/ I mean, I know that Ôshima Michiru's was truly something special, and the music isn't bad, per se, but I do hope that it becomes a little more... "dramatic"? Or perhaps just a little more "fitting" for the respective scenes. For instance, I thought the scoring in the
human transmutation debacle
was a little lacking in the necessary "punch." I think a full orchestral score is necessary for the series.

Although I loved the musical reference to the original score during the presentation of
Al's alchemist title
. :D

Completely disagree in here. I thought the score during that scene made it completely creepy and scary, which rendered it better than the homonymous in the original series. I would say it was probably the best part of the episode, in fact.

To be fair, I only watched it once, and I was mainly trying to understand the speech without the subtitles. I'll go back and rewatch it, though. Ôshima's score was just so seamlessly integrated into the show itself. Plus, I just like orchestral scores in general. XD

I think the origin episode in the original was handled a bit better, I'm particurlarly fond of the last scene in which they burn down the house in the original and Ed saying "maybe there's nothing equal to Mom in this world".

That said, I enjoyed this episode. Pacing is tight and I liked how they expanded more on the Alchemist test Ed took.

I think this episode lacked the emotional impact the original series has. That kind of sucks, but I'm still excited for more. I think Michiru Oshima's music added to the atmosphere a lot better, too.. kinda sucks that this composer can't really pull it off as well.

The house burning scene was actually in the manga, but they cut it and several other scenes from the episode. I guess they were running short on time. They covered about three chapters of the manga in this episode.

I think I feel the same way. =/ Again, I'll rewatch it, though, to give it a fair shake.

Didn't know it was really moving that quickly! :O That said, the scene is alluded to / partially shown in the intro, but I would really like to see a full version with this absolutely gorgeous and fluid animation that the series is already flaunting.

Another awesome episode. I thought that the music for the episode was effective, especially when Ed saw the "Truth".

Kinda disappointed that they cut the scene of them burning their house down, but at the same time, I loved how they worked in Isaac and his story into this series.

And after watching the previews for next week, I'm really glad with the updated design for Rose. Looks much closer to the manga version than the original series did.

One day I realized that sadness is just another word for not enough coffee.
Kid!Ed's voice is kind of annoying.

Wonder how long it'll take for the anime and manga storylines to merge.

This seems like a cash-grab to me. The art/animation looks lame compared to the original (or maybe I'm just being nostalgic) and the BG music is nowhere close. I like that some scenes are being fleshed out but this is still a huge MEH so far IMO..

You also like Asher Roth, so... Enough said. :lol

Just giving you a hard time. I actually think the art / animation is pretty fabulous! It's extremely fluid, and I think the character designs are more "intense" than the original. I wouldn't call it "lame" or "worse"--just "different." I think the characters (especially Mustang) are less "warm" this time around.

I think the characters are as entertaining as they were in the original, IMO.

Maybe it is me, but I think there's more humor now.
