Halo 3 lighting: Best in the biz??

I agree. Take level 4. The opening where you drive through the tunnel and come out into the rain. Did anyone seriously think that's what next gen Halo would like? Really?
I would have preferred actual rain....I wouldn't call the few droplets here and there rain.

.... it was.... raining in that level?

On his armour. The light comes from the top. ;)

And yeah the lighting in KZ2 is really good too but I don't see it as better than the one in Halo 3.
Look at this one, the range of "dark" in the shadow is really impressive.
I'm talking about enemies. It seems that there are almost no dynamic shadows (or very few can appear at the same time), and sometimes or at some distance there are no shadows being dropped by the enemies at all. Things that should light everything the f up don't do it (explosions, flamethrower). It is true that the bright colors look good, but the level lighting is actually quite bad when you look at those screens. KZ2 is in an entire new league when it comes to lighting, it counts up loads of light sources, shadows are dynamic and there's loads of them at once, they are also realistically rendered with inclusion of proximity of the light source. Absolutely no comparison here jet, you're a big Halo fan.

The flashlight in level 7 and level 8 used on Flood shows some impressive lighting that are very catchy. Level 8 nailed the biological shine of flesh. Everall, the lighting has a nice dynamic range, way better than Gear's static lighting.

Yes when you come out of the tunnel it's raining. Looks pretty average. MGS2 rain shouldn't be too much to ask as standard these days should it?

I'm really wondering who left Bungie before Halo 3 was made.

No really play FFIX the place that always rains (can't remember the name of the city) the rain was better there then it was in this game.

*edit* well maybe not better......but certainly comparable.

IT takes years of law school to make that observation. And it takes years of being a detective to notice that KZ2's lighting is more impressive than H3's.

I don't think the lighting is exceptional. It looks good, of course, but the two buffer HDR technique they're using just doesn't make a whole lot of sense, especially given the downsides of:

1. 640p resolution upscaled.

2. Unstable framerate.

3. Poor image quality and jaggies.

I wish they would have ditched that HDR technique and fixed the above issues. They could have just gone with standard HDR and it would have been more than adequate. I'm still puzzled over WHY they chose to go that route. Sounds incredibly excessive with marginal results.
Downside of 640p? lol. Something you can't notice over beautiful HDR. Unstable framerate--I shall lol again.

Or just good common sense and semi-good vision all of which many people apparently lack....

640p I can understand, but I've yet to experience unstable framerate.

wait... you were trying to bash killzone 2's lighting by picking out a screenshot where the player is looking up at the helghast's night sky.........?

Nope. Not the lighting.

I'm on record with the Sony Secret Police stating that the lighting in the Killzone 2 gameplay demonstration is fantastic. Really nice stuff.

Happens in co-op.

Perhaps your eyes aren't working properly, but a loss of 20% of the pixels on screen is obvious, and shows up as ugly jaggies on the screen. This translates to poor image quality in general, and I can assure you is quite noticeable.

The 'subtle beauty' of the HDR technique just doesn't look all that great over traditional techniques.

By the way, the unstable framerate shows its face in multiplayer all the time. it's a huge contrast to the previous halo titles which were generally very stable in multiplayer.

The whole lighting argument really can't be satiated in still screens. Jogging the viewpoint around and seeing the visual tricks react is what made me personnally scream EEK~!

Are you sure it's not lag? I only experience framerate drops in two player co-op split screen.

I'm 100% positive it's not lag. After playing Halo 2 online extensively, I can tell the difference between framerate issues and lag.

You sound like me. The framerate in MP is generally terrible and a real step down from Halo 2. I actually can't play as it hurts my eyes. I find level 6 is the same when you are inside. Outside is usually really smooth but inside......stutter.

Finally Killzone 2 and Halo 3 head-to-head battle in the same thread. This will be as good as it gets since KZ2 couldnt make it this fall.

You can't say such complimentive things about this game...didn't you hear it's inferior to halo 3's godlike lighting. :lol :lol :lol

So what do you find so impressive about the lighting in those tiny gifs, the muzzle flashes or the muzzle flashes?

And while I'm partially joking, besides that awesome lightning strike and explosion on the troop transport, the rest is all flashlight and muzzle flash. Dynamic physics, post processing effects, animation? Godly. Probably some of the best seen. But the lighting is not leaps and bounds above Halo 3 and we're talking about a game that isn't released yet. Not in those gifs anyway. Hell, look at that massive lightning strike at ground level. The entire area should go from darkened to lit up like the world's largest flash bulb was just snapped. What happens? Almost no change.

Let's do it like this. Halo 3's lighting is spectacular. Very awesome. Most people who have played it agree. Whether you are in "photomode" applying sweet post processing effects to your filtered shots, or just trouncing around live in the multiplayer, the lighting reacts very realistically. Materials light as they should, bloom is applied naturally, saturation effects add to the realism. Nice stuff.

And yeah, those KZ2 gifs are pretty neato too.

I was saying people here in this thread are saying halo 3's lighting was godlike, and all I was saying is that while it is good, it isnt as good as KZ2's lighting. I'm sure if KZ2 has a photomode that allowed for super orgasmic camera angles that reflect the light perfectly then we most certainly wouldn't be having this conversation.

/thread

I can't tell if this thread was a stealth troll or not because really the only way Halo 3 would have the best 'anything' visually is if Perfect Dark Zero was the only other FPS in existence.

God, that lightning in the sky is amazing with those clouds, and look at that lighting when he shoots that guy up....amazing!!!!!

I'm sticking PGR4 in here.

The lighting from the weather effects is just WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW.

Best looking racer this gen by a country mile.

I'm going to drop a caveat in here. It's getting a little thick. Please only discuss lighting if you've read and understand both The Struggle for Light and The Physics of the Tramcar, Experiments with a Light Bulb.

Please post your username with acknowledgment of completion and comprehension.

Cars in GT look great, but the environments are sub-par while PGR4 has got mind-blowing full-blown cities, excellent weather effects and great looking cars.

Anyway, I'm not arguing anymore, because I'm right.

Not that I'm disagreeing or agreeing...but taking the worst pic you can find of PGR4 and comparing it to the best pic of GT5 is a bit disengenuous don't you think?

It's tjhooker, just let him do his thing. It can only make this thread better.

p.s. no you're not cjkelly.

I didn't use the best pic of GT5 but if you want the best pic...take your pick (no pun intended)
