Is Sony opening themselves up to piracy by allowing the use of non-proprietary SSD cards for the PS5??

Will the PS5 be using a proprietary file system for external storage devices?
it would help defend against consoles being compromised, but you can't expect someone who only has one external drive to dedicate it to their console. There's also downloading firmware updates via PC, if that's still a thing.

Isn't Nintendo's stuff still pirate city? They're pretty huge in the console space.
Yep. Here in Brazil, I could guess close that half people (or close) has a pirated Switch - if you want to buy a console, they ask if you want a pirated or original (but only in minor stores). DS and 3DS also got a lot too. We basically didn't saw Wii U in the stores here, but when you see it, it's jailbroken.

Also, emulation on Nintendo hardware is pretty big

Piracy nowadays is not like the 90s or 2000s

Either way, piracy usually sells more consoles, so good for them;
PlayStation one and two were pirated as fuck, and both sold as fuck
Wii was pirated very early, and sold more than competition for a great margin
PC is huge in this sense...
Selling more consoles at a loss and making no game revenue seems like a negative...

In the short run is a bad thing - Dreamcast couldn't survive, but Sega was in a bag of shit already - however in the long run is great. Just see the PS2 and the DS, first and second place on the sales, and those were pirated as fuck. I mean, I rarely saw an original PS2 game, and even thou my friends got original DS games, they also had an R4
